Lyrics for Black Dog as interpreted by kevin

Black Dog Lyrics
Hey, hey, mama, said the way you move, gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove.
Oh, oh, child, way you shake that thing, gonna make you burn, gonna make you sting.
Hey, hey, baby, when you walk that way, watch your honey drip, can't keep away.

*Ah yeah, ah yeah, ah, ah, ah. Ah yeah, ah yeah, ah, ah, ah.

I gotta roll, can't stand still, got a flame in my heart, can't get my fill.
Eyes that shine burning red, dreams of you all through my head.

Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah.

Hey, baby, oh, baby, pretty baby, Tell me won't you you do me now.

Didn't take too long 'fore I found out, what people mean my down and out.
Spent my money, took my car, started telling her friends she wants to be a star.
I don't know but I been told, a big-legged woman ain't got no soul.

* Chorus

All I ask for when I pray, steady rollin' woman gonna come my way.
Need a woman gonna hold my hand, won't tell me no lies, make me a happy man.

Black dog is literally a black dog. The black dog is infected with rabies and is attacking people , the sweating and grooving is people running from the dog and the sting and burn is being bitten by the dog.P.S. twocents sounds like a bimbo

The song is about an ill-fated relationship. The song is in three parts. First, he's infatuated with a beautiful woman, and he can't think about anything else; he can't "get his fill" of her. They get together, but she treats him like crap, using him for his money. Finally, he drops the infatuation, and at the end, he just wants a woman who will be faithful and make him "a happy man".

The lyrics about the progression of a guys feeling about a beautiful woman and how his feelings change after she treats him bad indicate that the song is actually more complex than I originally thought. Plus, the time signature is awesome.

Another very rockable classic zep song. Plant said during an interview that the song was about a woman he was with who made him "very happy". He also said that they could not come up with a name so they called the song "Black dog" after a black lab that would hang out by the studio from time to time...that's one lucky dog eh?

Not sure why they named it "Black Dog" but i believe it is about a guy who sees a hot girl and fantasizes about her. When they finally get together he realizes what a money hungry bitch she is... he really just wants a woman to love him!

THIS IS NO B.S.!!! About 30 years ago I read a cheap paperback book which contained traditional wiccan spells (I was curious then about wicca, but never became a wiccan. If my memory is right, I believe the author was some chick named Katherine Paulsen). The potion to be used by women to sexually attract a man contained one ingredient that leaped off the page when I saw it: "Powdered Gall of a Black Dog". I immediately thought about the Led Zeppelin song by the same name. Read the lyrics again and listen to the track one more time... doesn't Robert sound like he's just drank some of this potion?

Isn't it about depression? Because "Black Dog" has basically become a common phrase now.

This song oozes sexuality.
I think it's about a hot girl that has him entranced. Jimmy Page was known to dabble in the arts. When ever I see a hot girl this song plays in my head.

I LOVE the guitar riff on this track! It is almost IMPOSSIBLE to play correctly. So many guys tried this back in high school when the album first came out, but NOBODY could get it right! I remember when Page, Plant and Jones were receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award (American Music Awards about 1998?). Page and Plant accepted their award via TV from England where they were rehearsing for the No Quarter tour. They played Black Dog, but it came out second rate. Page had simplified the riff, and it simply lost its hook. A local classic rock DJ here in Toronto pointed this out the next day over the radio. He said that Page was getting too old to play it! But a few weeks later the No Quarter tour came through town... I had tickets in row 10... it was an AMAZING concert... and Page played Black Dog PERFECTLY... NOTE for NOTE! The next day the radio DJ apologized and said he HAD to admit that Page was AWESOME... a 10 out of 10 that night!!!

"That guitar riff is so bad ass, and incredibly hard to play."

Its about a girl that Plant likes, but she uses him for his money and his fame.(Spent my money, took my car, started telling her friends shes gonna be a star).
Plant is bummed out by this, saying he needs a woman who "won't tell him no lies"

Well when you put the Led Zeppelin IV CD into a computer it's title is Black Dog {Sex~Lust} as all the tracks on led zep 4 have describing them somewhat.

but to go deeper i have to agree 100% with WYWH
it is an incredible song for reasons other than the lyrics though. Jimmy Page's guitaring was outstanding, i have played this song not onstage at a gig ot somthing but with a group of people jamming and its not hard but it sings and you can put all of your passion into the opening riff by bending and sliding and adding little tiny things. it isnt a song that necesarily has to be perfectly copied

awesome song

As much as I love Led Zeppelin (favorite band), this song, by looking at the lyrics looks like a rap song...and I totally hate that. I love the music but I'm not diggin the lyrics--Plant must've written this one...

Rap??? brokenrecall, you've got your time-line all messed up! This track pre-dates Rap by 25 years! The style is much more reminiscent of DELTA BLUES. Muddy Waters sometimes belted out lyrics one line at a time between riffs in the same manner. And just because Plant's lyrics rhyme... that doesn't make it Rap! It's Zeppelin Blues, and that's BLOOZ with a twist of lemon from those ultra-talented limey lemon-squeezers!!!

Woo! 100th post, baby, yeah!! I'd like to thank my parents for giving me the guidance in life, my dog Zoe, you're the best Zoe! Ummm.....and...I'd like to thank God, for giving me the ability to type. Brokenrecall, this is a story about a woman, not like rap. This is a bluesy song, and that is usually the subject matter for those songs- love and lust. In rap, they call women "bitches" and talk rather detailed about having sex. Rap has nothing on this song, and anyways, it's a story, the protagonist moves on at the end and instead of wanting a good looking woman, he just wants someone that'll make him happy, so it does have a good message.

Just kidding, I know that nobody really gives a shit. Everybody recognizes this song because of the unmistakeable riff and the great groove.
