Lyrics for Black Dog as interpreted by kevin

Black Dog Lyrics
Hey, hey, mama, said the way you move, gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove.
Oh, oh, child, way you shake that thing, gonna make you burn, gonna make you sting.
Hey, hey, baby, when you walk that way, watch your honey drip, can't keep away.

*Ah yeah, ah yeah, ah, ah, ah. Ah yeah, ah yeah, ah, ah, ah.

I gotta roll, can't stand still, got a flame in my heart, can't get my fill.
Eyes that shine burning red, dreams of you all through my head.

Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah.

Hey, baby, oh, baby, pretty baby, Tell me won't you you do me now.

Didn't take too long 'fore I found out, what people mean my down and out.
Spent my money, took my car, started telling her friends she wants to be a star.
I don't know but I been told, a big-legged woman ain't got no soul.

* Chorus

All I ask for when I pray, steady rollin' woman gonna come my way.
Need a woman gonna hold my hand, won't tell me no lies, make me a happy man.

"Big legged woman ain't got no soul" comes from an old blues tune called "Big Legged Woman." It was originally released by Brownie McGhee in 1946.

The first verse reads:

Big Legged woman now, where have you been?
I ain't had no livin' now, since God knows when
Aaah, big legged woman tell me where have you been?
I ain't had no livin' yeah, since God knows when

Like many of Zeppelin's lyrics, it was stolen from an old blues song and no credit was given to the author.

Correction (I had a typo in the second line. It should have been:

I ain't had no lovin' now since God knows when.

Plant also "borrowed" this line in another Zep tune. I'll let you guess which one...

Never saw the BK commercial. Sad...why don't they use a teletubbies song or something? Led Zeppelin rocks! Yes, I think their song is about sex, and yes, I had also heard that they guy who wrote it (sorry, can't remember who) named it after a black dog running around the studio. A title that has absolutely nothing to do with the song. I heard somewhere that Led Zeppelin named their band Led Zeppelin because they thought their album would go over like a lead balloon. Led Zeppelin. Who knows, who cares. All I need to know is that they rock!!!!!

I didn't even like this song until I stopped scrutinising the lyrics, and just started enjoying the music. And I still don't care 'what it's about'. Heh. ^_^

Like three fourths of the songs written in their time it's about a woman which is obvious. It's obviously him talking to one but I like the riff alot which was acctually inspired by muddy waters "smoke on the water" from his electric mud album. Jonsey helped alot with that riff he said he wanted smoke on the water but faster.

This song in my opinion is the "brother" to heartbreaker and ties as my fav (heartbreaker being my other Favorite). This is an awesome song and the opening in live shows (out in the tiles) really adds to the quality of the song, yes the songs title comes from a dog at the studio during recording, the songs meaning is about a fine ass chick who we all wanna hit, Plant, after F*cking her, thinks hes in love, but in reality she is just using him.

you can go to one of the Led Zeppelin sites i think www.led-zeppelin.com and hear JPJ teaching the band the rythym of the song is really something cool to check out.

the title actually is about a black dog who died at Headly Grange, the old farm house where most of this album, houses of the holy, and physical graffiti were written and recorded.

This is my all-time favorite song. Great vocals, great riff, amazing rythym and tempo changes. It's about a hot chick he sees and then rejects him. The titles about the black dog running around in front of the building where the song was made.

i don't mean this entire song, but i can see references to drugs in this song, more specifically marijuana;

I gotta roll, can't stand still, got a flame in my heart, can't get my fill.
Eyes that shine burning red, dreams of you all through my head.

he has to roll joints and the like. a flame to light it up. he can't get enough of it. his eyes turn red; he gets stoned.

Didn't take too long 'fore I found out, what people mean my down and out.
Spent my money, took my car, started telling her friends she wants to be a star.

he spends all his money and has to end up selling his car to pay for his habits.

All I ask for when I pray, steady rollin' woman gonna come my way.
Need a woman gonna hold my hand, won't tell me no lies, make me a happy man.

he needs a woman to roll some joints? that would make him happy.

i wouldn't trust my interpretation of some of the lyrics. i just saw some things that could be related in a way, but probably aren't.
this song is probably about some chick.

I always thought it was "steady loaded woman"i dunno, but it is, a close second to the ocean, my favorite riff. It sounds INCREDIBLE when played on the gitfiddle, lots of overdrive or distortion one. I have heard it is about, well named after, a black dog around the studio at the time. The song doesn't sound like it has anything to do with a black dog.

ok, ive heard about the whole Lord of the Rings relations and whatnot, do you really realize how easy it would be to compare any lyrics to the lord of the rings, i mean its a 3 set book about a conquest.. how many songs are about traveling and what not? ok so that might not make sense to all of you but it does to me but i may just be too stoned to realize. but im sure that this song was written while they were stoned, and im sure that the whole black dog around the studio is right. i mean plant and page are both great writers, but im sure they didnt spend 4 months researching books and thinking up metaphors for every song that they make. have any of you ever written a song? well i know when i write i write what comes in my head, i dont try to sit there and think of metaphors and relations to books to mess with everyone. and i mean no disrespect to anyone of zep, they are one of the greatest bands to ever live, and hell maybe they did take 4 months per song.. all i know is that whatever they did worked. they are musical genious

The woman spent his money and took his car you moron. Nothing original about those sentiments. "Eyes that shine, burnin' red" seems to be the old 'woman is evil' idea, though during Page's fantasy sequence in "Song Remains the Same", he turns toward the camera and his eyes are burning red. The riff is based on the riff from "Oh Well" by Fleetwood Mac. Peter Green was Mac's guiatrist/founder at the time and one of Page's favorites. It's about sex and nothing more. And yes, the title comes from the stray dog in the studio.
I was not aware that any Zeppelin songs had been used in ads until I heard 'Rock and Roll' on that Cadillac ad.

"Black Dog" is a good song but one that really comes alive in concert – watch the DVD for proof. All I can say about the lyrics is that, unlike the remainder of the album, it's about sex.

I never noticed the similarity to Fleetwood Mac's utterly gorgeous "Oh Well". Thanks to JumpyJack for pointing it out.
