Lyrics for Hats Off To (Roy) Harper as interpreted by kevin

Hats Off To (Roy) Harper Lyrics
When I done quit hollerin' baby, I believe I'll shake 'em on down
Get my babe, won't be late, You know by that I mean seconds late
Ah, must I holler, Must I shake 'em on down,
Well I've been mistreated, babe, I believe I'll shake 'em on down.
Well I ain't no monkey. I can't climb no tree,
No brown skin woman gonna make no monkey out of me,
I ain't no monkey, Sure can't climb no tree,
I been mistreated babe I believe I'll shake 'em on down,
Well I've been mistreated babe I believe I'll shake 'em on down.

Listen mama, Put on your mornin' gown'
Put in your nightshirt Mama we gonna shake 'em down
Must I holler? Must I shake 'em on down?

Gave my baby a twenty dollar bill,
If that don't get her, Sure my shot, shot, shot-gun will,
Yeah, I gave my baby a twenty dollar bill,
If that don't get that woman, I'm sure my shot-gun will.

Anyone who doesn't know who Roy Harper is, if you've heard "Have A Cigar" by Pink Floyd(great song), that is Roy singing the song.

I know that heaps of Zep fans knock it, but I love HOTRH's wackiness! And I've heard have a cigar, I don't like pink flyod much, especially not that album. It's a little too much, too over the top sometimes, but I suppose Shine on you carzy diamond is a musically brilliant song.

I am a huge Zeppelin fan...but I think this is the worst Zeppelin song. And there are very few Zep songs I dislike.

You don't like what Zeppelin liked if you don't like this song. It's not their best but I think it's decent. Cracks me up when he says--"no monkey....sho caint climb no tree"

ha...well...its not Led Zep's best, it is really different then their normal songs and I never really saw them as the type to sorta dedicate a song to someone like that! BUt hey! Its led Zep.... I like it cause its different though... i like to embrace the weird...

Speaking of weird, Roy Harper is described as a real weirdo. He toured with Zeppelin briefly and could often be seen in the wings just off-stage shaking a rubber gorilla while they played.

Wow, I had no idea so many people didn't like this song. I love it! I didn't know who Roy Harper was before today, though, just that I love "Have a Cigar" as well.

Muzzy-Thank you. I had no idea who Roy Harper was.
*GASPS!* I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU PEOPLE DON'T LIKE THIS SONG!! It's so fun. Everytime I hear this, I picture Plant and Page sitting on stools just having a fun time singing this....idk, maybe I'm crazy, but I love this song.
I had no idea this many people despised this song...what a shame. If there's any Led Zeppelin song you should hate, it's "In the Light" or "In the Evening" I'm not very fond of those songs.

ive never herd this song before but i noticed the similarities to "Custard Pie". Look at the lines from it..."Put on your night shirt and your morning gown
You know by night I'm gonna shake 'em down
Put on your night shirt Mama, and your morning gown
Well, you know by night I'm gonna shake 'em down"....thats almost the same as "Listen mama, Put on your mornin' gown', Put in your nightshirt Mama we gonna shake 'em down" from this song.
Does anyone know why these songs are so similiar lyrically?

They're similar because the lyrics from both of them come from a song by Bukka White called "Shake 'em on Down".

To my understanding, Led Zeppelin recorded this song because they admired the way Roy Harper didn't sell out. He stood by what he felt was right.

Roy Harper later showed his appreciation by donating the sleeve photograph for Physical Graffiti.

It's a bit different, but I love the sort of muffled, distorted quality his voice has on this track.

I like this song alot. I don't know why. The lyrics are pretty odd, different... old kind of blues-ish. But I really like the way Plant sings the song. For a while I couldn't make out too much of what he was saying but it reminded me of a dark old and out dated place... someone just singing in front of a crowd... nothing like new music, but that's why I liked it.

I like this song too. It's odd. But it's so...realistic I guess. I mean people actually do that. I love the ending. It's so. I don't even know how to explain it. I also didn't know who Roy Harper was until today. I love Pink Floyd as well. So that's interesting.

Jeez! Come on guys! Fellow worshippers of the mighty Zep! I'm only 15 but two months or so after getting into Zep I was into the blues.

It's such in instrumental part of what they were. When the Levee Breaks is a cover of an old blues track by Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe. Gallows Pole was a Leadbelly cover. They covered Robert Johnson himself, and his lyrics were in the Lemon Song.

HOTRH has that acoustic, raw blues about it and it's fantastic!
