Lyrics for Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp as interpreted by kevin

Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp Lyrics
Ah caught you smiling at me, That's the way it should be,
Like a leaf is to a tree, so fine.

Ah all the good times we had, I sang love songs so glad
Always smiling, never sad, so fine.

*As we walk down the country lanes, I'll be singing a song,
Hear me calling your name.
Hear the wind within the trees, Telling Mother Nature 'bout you and me.

Well if the sun shines so bright, Or on our way it's darkest night
The road we choose is always right, so fine.

Ah can your love be so strong When so many loves go wrong
Will our love go on and on...

* Chorus

My, my la de la come on now it ain't too far,
Tell your friends all around the world,
Ain't no companion like a blue eyed merle.
Come on now well let me tell you,
What you're missing, missing, 'round them brick walls.

So of one thing I am sure, It's a friendship so pure,
Angels singing all around my door, so fine.
Yeah, ain't but one thing to do Spend my natural life with you,
You're the finest dog I knew, so fine.

When you're old and your eyes are dim, There ain't no old Shep gonna happen again,
We'll still go walking down country lanes, I'll sing the same old songs,
Hear me call your name.

this is one of Zeppelin's finer pieces, and is about Plant's dog Strider and the relationship between man and man's best friend.

the title is in Welsh, is pronounced 'Bron-Yar', and means "Breast of Gold". part of the credits on Led Zeppelin III read "Credit must be given to BRON-Y-AUR, a small derelict cottage in South Snowdonia for painting a somewhat forgotten picture of true completeness which acted as an incentive to some of these musical statements."

Ramthar, I agree that this is definately one of Zeppelins finer pieces. I usually find myself cranking this tune late at night with my buddies after a few beers. The instrumentals have such a funky feel.

Anway, I'm always a bit confused on the reference to a blue eyed merle (a blackbird by definition - from 15th century english). However, I think that their lyrcis often make analogies to a certain gender/race. It's easy to pick out of several other songs.

a "blue eyed merle" is a breed of dog, something like a collie, i believe. and although i don`t know this for sure,
i think that "There ain't no old Shep gonna happen again" may mean that Plant may have once had a sheep dog that the dog in this song didn`t like much, and Plant is telling him that he won`t do that to him again. but that is just speculation.

Does any else think this is Jimmy Page's best accoustincs??? As a guitar player, its unbelievable to me that way he plays in this song. My heart always seems to stop during the solo....UNBELIEVABLE!

For information - a Blue Merle is a type of Great Dane, a cross between a steel blue and a harlequin. They were considered a pointless by-product when trying to produce the more recognised pedigrees of blues and harlequins. Great dogs, had one until a couple of years back. Great song, too - just been watching/listening to it on Led Sep - DVD, that I just bought. P.S. The grey/blue collie might also be called a merle, not sure about that though.

I had heard Stairway to Heaven....thought Zeppelin was cool.......lol....Then heard this song on a road trip smokin the ganj....Stoned off my ass....It was an amazing experience.....I realized at that moment that I had been mislead......There was a lot more to Zeppelin than Stairway to Heaven.....It was an enlightenment......This song is almost the epitome of good moods.....They sound like they are having so much fun recording this song......It's one of the best.......Everytime I hear it I feel like I'm hearing it for the first time!......Good stuff.......

i'm sure i'll get slammed by some people for this next comment but, 'stairway' isn't all it's cracked up to be. anywho, this song is insane. i always considered it to be about a girl, but the explanations by ramthar make a lot of sense. it definitely is one of the best songs to blast just to put a smile on your face

Bron-y-aur stomp is just brilliant. Its got that southern sound to it. And Jones playing his standing, fretless bass. You just gotta love it. Its an awesome song, but its about my 10th favorite from zeppelin.

I assume he named his dog after the Strider (Aragorn) from Lord of the Rings...Am I right?

Also, Stairway to Heaven is awesome (Listen to it in reverse...he..he..he), but everytime I here a different recording he sings it different..

Robert Plant himself refers to this song as "as song about my dog." He also screams the dog's name "Strider" after the song on the DVD. It is definitely about his dog. Like many of Plant's works the dog's name references the Lord of the Rings.

There is MUCH more to Led Zeppelin than Stairway...

OK, a Blue Merle is a collie, typical of that area of Wales and Shropshire (just over the border) A Wall eyed Merle is one with one blue and one brown eye, so a blue eyed seems evident. They are beautiful dogs and the song, for me, evokes the whole area...wild and wonderful.

I don't think Stairway to Heaven sucks, but I definitely don't think it's everything it's cracked up to be. This song gets me bouncing no matter what kind of mood I'm in. While smoking, the songs aren't any better...they just sound so much different and that's why I always feel like I'm hearing them for the first time...Page's acoustics are awesome! I don't know HOW zeppelin can pull off so many catchy songs, but they did, and to that they deserve to be named the best band in history. yep - ever.

This is actually "Bron-Y-Ar Stomp" not "Bron-Yr-Ar Stomp". The instrumental version "Bron-Yr-Aur" is the one spelled with the R.

Merle coloring isn't breed specific (ie Great Danes versus any other dogs). Anyone know specifically what kind of dog did he have? My guess is that he probably is talking about the Australian Shepherd. They come in both red and blue merle colors (as well as others) and they can have blue or brown eyes. They are great dogs, or so I hear...

This song is about Plant's dog "Strider". It is a blue merle Collie with blue eyes. The dog can be seen in the movie "The Song Remains The Same". In the beginning there are scenes with each band member. There are a lot of breeds that can have a red or blue merle colour.
"Old Shep" is a reference to an old Elvis Presley song ("Old Shep"), where a boy has to put down his dog, because it was too old. Plant promises Strider that he won't let it happen to him.
