Very simple lyrics - but very pretty - I don't think its about a one night stand like in Trainspotting - but just about hopeing for just one beautifull night amongst shit - an atomic bomb being the extreme.

i'm not going to lie about about the patently overt meaning of this song. okay, it is simply about felatio, ie, oral stimulation of the penis. case in point: "your hair is beautiful" - perspective of the blow-jobee looking down on a kneeling blowjobber. The song is about Deborah Harry's first time with a girl. The comment "your hair is beautiful tonight" seems most appropiately directed at a female, I think, and Debbie Harry is openly bisexual. Hate to tell you guys but the song is about a coffee machine. Hence "Make it magnificent". It was quite a famouse brand in it's day but it is now long since discontinued. I think it was no longer made even when this song was written. I guess Debbie Harry liked her caffeine ;)

I love this song.
While I would not go so far as to say it's their best, it is pretty F###ing good.
I can see sex (in some form) as the theme of the song, but I could also be open to different interpretations as well.

And as a side-note: I like ABBA too, and I am not gay.

Well - you guys are all completely wrong! And i'm sure Deborah Harry would clear this up. It has nothing to do with sex you idiots. Atomic - in the 1970's, when i was listening to this album 1979 exactly, there was a general fear of nuclear war with Russia. Atomic - and a constance reference to 'Your Hair Is Beautiful" - and then saying "Atomic" - Is simply poetic - Radiation, will eliminate your 'beautiful hair" - She repeats over and over "beautiful hair" and Atomic -- it's pretty clear. If you watch the video blondie made for this song - it's a post nuclear holocaust scene - there's a clip of a nuclear bomb going off, there's a night club with Blondie appear and the writing underneath is all in Russian. - It's kinda like a Mad Max scenario - get it? There's even Radiation warning signs in the club in the video. Geez - blowjobs! You idiots!
