Ring, my friend I said you'd call
Doctor Robert
Day or night he'll be there any time at all
Doctor Robert

Doctor Robert
You're a new and better man
He help you to understand
He does everything he can
Doctor Robert

If you're down he'll pick you up
Doctor Robert
Take a drink from his special cup
Doctor Robert

Doctor Robert
He's a man you must believe
Helping anyone in need
No one can succeed like
Doctor Robert

Well, well, well, you're feeling fine
Well, well, well, he'll make you
Doctor Robert

My friend works for the National Health
Doctor Robert
Don't pay money just to see yourself
Doctor Robert

Doctor Robert
You're a new and better man
He help you to understand
He does everything he can
Doctor Robert

Well, well, well, you're feeling fine
Well, well, well, he'll make you
Doctor Robert

Ring, my friend I said you'd call
Doctor Robert
Doctor Robert

General Comment:All of you have it wrong. It is about a heroin addict going to his doctor to drink the special cup a/k/a: the orange methadone drink to help an addict trying to kick it as a means to cope. They don"t call methadone "The orange handcuffs" for nothing. Because you have to go and see Doc Robert frequently.

General Comment:Clearly a song about a phoney doctor, possibly one who hands out drugs and booze from 'his special cup'. A little sad, but typical since most bands at the time, including the Beatles were doing drugs, and everyone had their special dealers.

General Comment:OK so i actually just looked this up and found out that john Lennon said he was doctor Robert because he was the one who carried all the pills in the early days though it may also have to do with a certain dentist

General Comment:I've always wondered about the line "Ring my friend I said you'd call Dr. Robert" because it's such a peculiar wording. I'm wondering if this is a play on words where the obvious reading is "Ring" on a phone, tying it to "call Dr. Robert," but then the more subtle reading is not "Ring" the verb, but "Ring" the noun, short for "Ringo"

"Ringo my friend, I said you'd call Dr. Robert."

General Comment:This is a song about a doctor friend who introduced the Beatles to LSD - whatever his real name was. It is certainly not about Bob Dylan (Zimmerman).

"Well well well, you're feeling fine.
Well well well, we'll bring you - Dr. Robert.
    (get it?)

General Comment:On June 12, 2007 on the Howard Stern Show, a hilarious song parody inspired by Dr. Roni DeLuz was played to the tune of Doctor Robert. The lyrics refer to Dr. Roni as a ripoff artist and to her Martha's Vineyard Diet Detox as a sham:

Want to get ripped off? Then call her up Dr. Roni
She'll stick coffee in your ass not your cup, high colonic, Dr. Roni
Dr. Roni, she'll wrap you up in blankets from a moving van
She'll flush out crayons and worms from your can
There's no bigger sham, Dr. Roni
Hook up a car battery to a moving blanket, Dr. Roni
For 10,000 dollars she'll mix a shake, you drink it, Dr. Roni
    Dr. Roni (fade out)

General Comment:i was almost positive that this song referred to Dr. Robert of Pala, in Aldous Huxley's book "Island". Huxley is on Sgt. Pepper album, so I know the Beatles were fond of him. Also, in the book, Dr. Robert is the administer and main supporter of "moksha medicine" (which is I believe psilocybin syntesized into a pill, it's either that or some other hallucinogen) for NATIONAL HEALTH.. "works for the National Health"
Dr. Robert also empasizes the point that you can understand your whole self until you explore all your consciosnesses. Taking the medicine helps people understand. "you're a new and better man"
    "he'll help you understand"

Dr. Robert is also in the book in the process of making more advanced medicines and is pretty much spending all his time for the advancement of these ideas. "he'll do everything he can"

tell me with all those facts considered that Dr. Robert isn't Dr. Robert McPhail from the fictional Island of Pala
