Remember the first time I told you I love you -
It was raining hard and you never heard -
You sneezed! and I had to say it over
"I said I love you" I said... you didn't say a word
Just held you hands to my shining eyes
And I watched as the rain ran through your fingers
Held your hands to my shining eyes and smiled as you kissed me...
"if you die" you said "so do I" you said...
And it starts the day you make the sign
"tell me I'm forever yours and you're forever mine
Forever mine..."
"if you die" you said "so do I" you said...
And it starts the day you cross that line
"swear I will always be yours and you'll always be mine
You'll ways be mine
Always be mine..."
Remember the last time I told you I love you -
It was warm and safe in our perfect world -
You yawned and I had to say it over
"I said I love you" I said... you didn't say a word
Just held your hands to your shining eyes
And I watched as the tears ran through your fingers
Held your hands to your shining eyes and cried...
"if you die" you said "so do I" you said...
But it ends the day you see how it is
There is no always forever... just this...
Just this...
"if you die" you said "so do I" you said
But it ends the day you understand
There is no if... just and
There is no if... just and
There is no if...
It was raining hard and you never heard -
You sneezed! and I had to say it over
"I said I love you" I said... you didn't say a word
Just held you hands to my shining eyes
And I watched as the rain ran through your fingers
Held your hands to my shining eyes and smiled as you kissed me...

And it starts the day you cross that line
"swear I will always be yours and you'll always be mine
You'll ways be mine
Always be mine..."

it just goes to show that the one you love more than anything can fade away with just a little time, and smith did a great job of showing that with this song.
I prefer to think of it as being a perfect example of mixed emotions in love.
She's not a big Cure fan, but she cried so hard when this song came on.
That's what it means to me, knowing that a relationship will end someday, even at your peak of happiness, knowing that one day you'll be parted.
Depressing huh?
The meaning is hidden in the musical development. pay particular attention to how young and confined the "garden" of music sounds as one thing blooms into the next in bursts of strumming and brushes of synth over the hollow crackling drums.
The vocals are a conversation between a flower and the sun. It begins on a wet rainy day, when she was a seed just beginning to sprout.
He tells her that he loves her, but nestled in dirt beneath the pouring rain, she doesn't hear him.
She sneezes, as she begins to sprout. She feels his warmth and reaches towards him, towards his shining eyes, up past the surface of the soil into the sky...
The seasons change, winter comes, he leaves, and she sleeps....
Time passes, she reawakens as he returns and their relationship continues to develop into a lush and beautiful multilayered garden, full of textures, colors and life.
And now I shut up.
And you should listen to the rest and appreciate it yourself.
P.S. IF YOUR ARE of THE CURE and you don't appreciate what I'm doing, please drop me a message.
But after reading your comment and looking at the lyrics again, I totally understand it.
"If you die" you said, "so do I" you said.
....
'"There is no if, just and"
which becomes "And you die, so do I"
This song is heart-breaking and heart-warming at the same time. Amazing ambivalence.
I don't think I could live without this song.
