the sun has left
the rays are gone
and all the kids have left their tears
and gone home
sweet seventeen
sour twenty-nine
and i can't explain myself
what i hope to find
you were all so kind
when i was near
and if you're still feeling down
then maybe you need me around
to love and hold you
don't say i hadn't told you so
maybe you need me around
i had no luck
i had no shame
i had no cause
just seventeen days of rain
and you in my eyes
just one more song
to slay this earth
and i can't explain myself
just what it's worth
it was all i had
but not all i need
and i can't escape the fact
that i still bleed
and if you're still feeling down
and if it seems way too long
then maybe you need me around
i had no voice
i had no drive
i had no choice
i done my time
i had myself
i had my band
i had my love
i had no hand in watching it all
fall apart
and if you're still feeling down
then maybe you need me around
to lift and scold you
to see you crashing all right now
maybe you need me around

My Interpretation:The lyrics in this song are some of the most personal lyrics Corgan has ever written. I think the song is about his divorce and how he felt like he lost everything that was important to him towards the end of the Mellon Collie era. I think the line "sour 29" pinpoints the when to 96/97 (Corgan was born in '67). This is also when his wife divorced him and when their touring keyboardist died and he kicked Chamberlain out of the band. I think these lines pretty well sum this up and speak to how he felt like his world was crashing around him.

    i had myself /
    i had my band /
    i had my love /
i had no hand in watching it all /
    fall apart

With that context, the rest of the lyrics fit together to paint a scene of longing for his wife and unhappiness with his life.

General Comment:I agree with xx open season, it's about him dealing with the band slowing crashing and him coming to terms with it in the aftermath.

General Comment:it's about going thru rough times
    i had no voice
    i had no drive
    i had no choice
    i done my time
    i had myself
    i had my band
    i had my love
i had no hand in watching it all
    fall apart

basically this is about ending the band

billy mentions 17 a few times in the song, maybe referring to the poem 17 on adore

General Comment:Relend, I think he said that 'Stand Inside Your Love' was the only love song he had written about a specific person... Well, I think that's what he said in 'Storytellers' anyway. I think there are more than a few songs that are inarguably about love...

General Comment:The entire Adore album was about love though, in its various forms. It's obviously what Billy was writing about at the time. However, with all the tension in the band, I do believe that this was probably written about the demise of the Pumpkins, which is probably why it ws only released after they broke up, because it really is a beautiful song that would have worked really well on Adore.
There's no reason why the song shouldn't work on two levels though. I certainly wouldn't dismiss the other meaning that's been suggested.

General Comment:I don't think the song can be about any love he once had. Corgan said that the only song he had ever written about love was on Machina, "Stand Inside Your Love"

General Comment:According to Corgan, the band's inevitable end was apparent around Adore- Jimmy was gone, tension was building between him and D'arcy.

Keep in mind that for Machina, he had to practically begged D'arcy to do one last album. She didn't even go on tour for the album.

I'm sure the writting was on the wall that after the fourth album it wasn't going to last.

General Comment:Not that I want to tear down any of the ideas posted, but keep in mind that the song was originally written during the Adore sessions, so it can't be about the break up of the band or the fans after the last show.
I think it makes sense that it is about a passed love that is regretting their decision to break up and wants to get back together. And Billy is saying I told you we shouldn't have broken up.
