Every time we do this
I fall for her
Wave after wave after wave
It's all for her
I know this can't be wrong I say
(and I'll lie to keep her happy)
As long as I know that you know
That today I belong
Right here with you
Right here with you...
And so we watch the sun come up
From the edge of the deep green sea
And she listens like her head's on fire
Like she wants to believe in me
So I try
Put your hands in the sky
Surrender
Remember
We'll be here forever
And we'll never say goodbye

I've never been so
Colorfully-see-through-head before
I've never been so
Wonderfully-me-you-want-some-more
And all I want is to keep it like this
You and me alone
A secret kiss
And don't go home
Don't go away
Don't let this end
Please stay
Not just for today

Never never never never never let me go she says
Hold me like this for a hundred thousand million days
But suddenly she slows
And looks down at my breaking face
Why do you cry? what did I say?
But it's just rain I smile
Brushing my tears away

I wish I could just stop
I know another moment will break my heart
Too many tears
Too many times
Too many years I've cried over you

How much more can we use it up?
Drink it dry?
Take this drug?
Looking for something forever gone
But something
We will always want?

Why why why are you letting me go? she says
I feel you pulling back
I feel you changing shape
And just as I'm breaking free
She hangs herself in front of me
Slips her dress like a flag to the floor
And hands in the sky
Surrenders it all

I wish I could just stop
I know another moment will break my heart
Too many tears
Too many times
Too many years I've cried for you
It's always the same
Wake up in the rain
Head in pain
Hung in shame
A different name
Same old game
Love in vain
And miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
Away from home again

My Interpretation:From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea charts the narrator's history of chronic infidelity - and the subsequent feelings of guilt, regret, shame and fear of losing the love of his life due to his own indiscretions.

The very personal lyrics appear to be torn directly from the heart of Robert Smith, or at least a character like him: a man who, although in a committed relationship with one woman, nevertheless faces (and often succumbs to) temptation in the form of sexual overtures by other women.

Though he tried to convince himself that these dalliances mean something to him, the last few lines makes it clear that they really don't. Long periods away from his true love (on the road touring, perhaps?) appear to be the indirect cause of his cheating ways, but no matter how he justifies his actions in his own head or how convincingly he deceives his lover/s, guilt and shame eat away at his heart, which belongs to one woman alone.

General Comment:In relation to the lyrics and nothing more, this song is about a guy who is in a relationship with a girl who adores him, but he has his doubts about how much he is willing to put forth.
However, as with most Cure songs, much more is revealed through the use of symbols and metaphors. Personally, this represents any relationship with something that you don't want, but is addictive and too powerful for your will to overcome. It could be a girl, a drug, anything really.
What it means to Robert Smith is completely separate to what it represents to you. While I too enjoy trying to pinpoint the song's original inspiration, it is very important not to ignore what it means personally.

    General Comment:Absolutely love this song.

    Some favorite lyrics:

"And don't go home don't go away
Don't let this end please stay
not just for today" -- Even though he knows the relationship may not be meant to be...he doesn't want it to end.

"But suddenly she slows and looks down at my breaking face
Why do you cry? what did I say?
But it's just rain I smile brushing my tears away" -- my favorite part of the whole song. He's trying not to show her how hurt he is..and his true feelings.

"And just as I'm breaking free she hangs herself in front of me
Slips her dress like a flag to the floor and hands in the sky
Surrenders it all" -- Right as he's trying to distance himself from her and the relationship - she's there .. getting naked....and obviously then they hook up and relationship continues

Seriously one of the most amazing songs ever. Doesn't get more romantic or better than this

General Comment:In my opinion, this song is about unrequited love. The one speaking has had a relationship with someone (sexually and possibly otherwise) and the other person is getting something out of it but not to the extent as the author. The author knows this but can't break free from it. When the love interest senses his attempts to break it off, she pulls him back. It happens over and over. And possibly, from the lyrics at the end, "It's always the same/Wake up in the rain/Head in pain/Hung in shame/A different name/Love in vain" especially with regard to "A different name" this seems to be a habit of the author. To fall in love with different people and be unable to walk away when they don't feel the same.

It is a familiar story for me. Another person can be like a drug, especially when you get a hint of mutual attraction or emotion from the other person and then they pull back. You want and seek that same response from them. When you get it, in whatever form, sex usually, then you become hopeful. However, there is always that internal struggle where you know that person is not ever going to want you in the same way you want them, but you can't break free.

General Comment:Most of The Cure's songs after The Top are about Roberts relationship with his fans and his music.

Robert has been in a relationship (married her) from high school and he's quite happy. It's about his music and his mistress is his "fans". Try and listen to lyrics and think of it from that point of view. The whole Disintegration album was recorded when he was doing LSD (read the books) and was afraid of turning 30, yes 30 years old scared him to death. The last line of the last song "Untitled" says it all...

    "feeling the moster climb deeper
inside of me feeling him gnawing my heart away
hungrily i'll never lose this pain never dream of
    you again"

The YOU is us his fans, with Robert contemplating retiring AGAIN!

General Comment:As far as i know, the wish album is actually based on Robert Smith's on and off again relationship with his child hood sweetheart and wife at the time.. you know i have no idea if they are still together but i was under the impression that they were divorced at some point, and this.. the break up mix tape that smith created to 'heal' himself.. i say this, as there is a lot of songs with similar feeling on this album, this is my faveourite song, and the whole album gets played when i'm feeling blue..

General Comment:I have not listened to this song in years, the wonderful ipod shuffle brought it back to me! I was a huge cure fan in the 80s, I had the hair, the clothes, the eye makeup... I thought they wrote every song about my life and for me!

This song still rocks and still brings a tear to my eye, looking at this song and the album as a whole, this was a biting, cynical look at his career and his fans... He was over it! The girl in this song is his career. Rolling stone said it best in their article about him, the people that truly loved and lived the Cure's music growing up either killed themselves or got over it... Luckily I got over it, i hardly ever wear eye makeup anymore!

General Comment:I think this song is about her being in love with him still but he's drifting from her, like a lot here have said. But I don't know about her making a scene everytime he tries to leave, I think it just hurts him way too much to try to leave her. Because as much as he's drifted away from her, everytime he's with her he still feels like he loves her, and he cares for her way too much to hurt her. And I think part of her knows he's changing, like it says i feel you changing shape, but she just doesn't want to believe it, she wants to believe that he loves her just like he says he does. "And she listens like her head's on fire Like she wants to believe in me". this is my favorite song by the cure. by far. and i love them. something about this song just always makes me want to cry.
