Lyrics for Apart as interpreted by oofus

Apart Lyrics
He waits for her to understand
But she won't understand at all
She waits all night for him to call
But he won't call anymore
He waits to hear her say
"Forgive"
But she justs drops her pearl-black eyes
And prays to hear him say
"I love you"
But he tells no more lies

He waits for her to sympathize
But she won't sympathize at all
She waits all night to feel his kiss
But always wakes alone
He waits to hear her say
"Forget"
But she just hangs her head in pain
And prays to hear him say
"No more
I'll never leave again"

How did we get this far apart?
We used to be so close together
How did we get this far apart?
I thought this love would last for ever

He waits for her to understand
But she won't understand at all
She waits all night for him to call
But he won't call
He waits to hear her say
"Forgive"
But she just drops her pearl black eyes
And prays to hear him say
"I love you"
But he tells no more lies

How did we get this far apart?
We used to be so close together
How did we get this far apart?
I thought this love would last for ever

I really can't belive that no one has commented on this one yet.

I think the meaning of this song is pretty apparent. Its a break-up song. However, I dont belive any other break up song has ever so eloquently laid bare the act of breaking up, or been so monumentally depressing. This is quite possibly the most depressing song I've ever heard. Between the woodwinds, the simple drums, and the haunted lyrics whispered a half second behind Robert Smiths' voice... it really brings you down.

Typical depressed cure song, but new style depression, so instead of the problems of robert smith, it's the breaking up of a couple. Well, it makes you cry the same I guess.

probably the best song on the "wish" album, both lyrically and musically...i still can't get over the lyrics and how easly they can be transpired into the real life situation of losing one who you truly loved...scary reality

This song speaks simply and powerfully about the way communication breaks down between two people who were in loving but are drifting apart - they each wish the other to do something or say something they desperately want to hear, but they don't tell each other what that thing is...they just wait and hope it happens, but it never does. The almost telepathic communication of young intense love has gone, and they haven't learnt to bridge the gap. After 21 years of marriage, I can feel it happening all the time, the silences, the expectations that come to nought, the hope of love returning slowly dying...

After about half a year, it's still hard for me to hear this song. The only difference now is I don't wait for him to call anymore. The ultimate break-up song, no doubt about it. One of my favorite Cure solos also.

Robert Smith said somewhere it was about "watching other people, and how every relationship has this huge, aching hole in the middle of it."

Truly beautiful and haunting, one Wish's redeeming features (along with From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, of course.) If you're going to hang yourself, this is the song to die with.

this song is simply amazing
i think what adds to the feeling is robert smith's added whispering of each line (you can hear it in the background of the main vocal)

This is what "man" typically does to himself. Through miscommunication and misunderstanding, pride and stubborness he/she places themself in a hole that they aren't willing to get out of. When somthing as important as love is hurt and damaged what else can you do....fatalism.

one of the saddest songs i've ever heard. probably because i can completely relate. the ultimate breakup song. one person wanting it to be over. the other wanting nothing but to be together. you can feel the pain from both sides. the guy wanting the girl to understand, to forgive. the girl, waiting for him to come back, to work things out. hard to listen to, but a wonderful song.

It sends chills through me this song. It seems one day they just woke up and realised that they don't have the same connection they used to have. I think they were just in routine the lyrics "She waits for him to say I love you but he tells no more lies" makes it seem that he had been just saying it without meaning and now he realises that he has fallen out of love. Robert Smith is absolutely amazing, his voice is so haunting. Although it is a breakup song, so sexy on the other hand....

this song gives me chills every time i hear it.

it's a song about a breakup. the couple just realizes that their relationship isn't like it used to be... and the girl still thinks that he's going to call, and he doesn't. so i always thought it was more of the boy that thought the relationship wasn't working anymore... and the girl was just kind of left in the dark...

it's a horrible feeling.

It's apparent to me upon reviewing the lyrics, the guy has been unfaithful and seeking forgiveness. =
He waits to hear her say
"Forgive"
But she justs drops her pearl-black eyes
And prays to hear him say
"I love you"
But he tells no more lies.
He's already told the ultimate lie, by loving her and being unfaithful in their relationship.
He waits for her to understand
But she won't understand at all
She waits all night for him to call
But he won't call. Here is realizes she'll never understand his cheating on her, and she deep down does wish he'd call so they can talk it over, but he is too ashamed to call.
He realizes that it may indeed be his fault that they've ootten so far apart, still he cries out, questioning it, in hopes someone will give him a definitive answer. Even though (subconsciously he knows) he really has noone else to blame but himself. =
How did we get this far apart?

How did we get this far apart?
I thought this love would last for ever

I don't think this song is about cheating. He wants to be forgiven because he doesn't love her anymore. And he doesnt understand why they've grown apart.

Its about two friends, shes with somebody, and he wants her. Thats why its so hard for them, shes waits for the call but he's had enough. She dose'nt understand why they still cant be friends, who would want to be friends with the person the want to be with but cant.

He fell out of love with her and only wants her to understand and forgive him.

She deeply loves him and believes there's still a chance.

Yeah, The Cure's got great songs about being in love and great songs, like this one, about breaking up. It's a transition, after you realize the other one wasn't really worth it, you should move on to Shiver and Shake.

"You're just three sick holes that run like sores" works if you're a straight man.

But if you keep on listening to this song, Trust, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, Letter to Elisse, To Wish Impossible Things, Cut, End, then that's another story. There are other songs like these I just named, but they came in handy since I'm listening to wish and I have just ended a relationship I thought "would last forever"
