I've been looking so long at these pictures of you
That I almost believe that they're real
I've been living so long with my pictures of you
That I almost believe that the pictures are
All I can feel

Remembering
You standing quiet in the rain
As I ran to your heart to be near
And we kissed as the sky fell in
Holding you close
How I always held close in your fear
Remembering
You running soft through the night
You were bigger and brighter and wider than snow
And screamed at the make-believe
Screamed at the sky
And you finally found all your courage
To let it all go

Remembering
You fallen into my arms
Crying for the death of your heart
You were stone white
So delicate
Lost in the cold
You were always so lost in the dark
Remembering
You how you used to be
Slow drowned
You were angels
So much more than everything
Hold for the last time then slip away quietly
Open my eyes
But I never see anything

If only I'd thought of the right words
I could have held on to your heart
If only I'd thought of the right words
I wouldn't be breaking apart
All my pictures of you

Looking so long at these pictures of you
But I never hold on to your heart
Looking so long for the words to be true
But always just breaking apart
My pictures of you

There was nothing in the world
That I ever wanted more
Than to feel you deep in my heart
There was nothing in the world
That I ever wanted more
Than to never feel the breaking apart
All my pictures of you

Song Meaning:The song is not about breakups at all...

Robert Smith has said in several interviews that the song is about his wife Mary Poole, whom he married in 1988.

They had a house fire and the only possessions that survived was a box of photos, of his wife.. the song is about going through those photos and the memories of them. I'm sure a lot of other stuff he left out.

He is still married to Mary Poole... and although the song sounds sad, as all of The Cure songs generally do, its actually quite uplifting.

He used one of the photos of his wife as the cover photo on the single as well. :)

General Comment:This song was one of the first The Cure song I heard and after I just started to search for more and fell in love with all the others songs. I think their songs are sooo meaningful and touch deep inside all of us, it's quite hard to see someone feel indifferent when listening to this song. (actually, any The Cure song)

It's simple and perfect, it's hard putting in words all I feel when I listen to this song.

General Comment:The ending seemed fitting for right now. As for the future, that will speak for itself:) Never say never. But never say always either.

Song Meaning:I think the song is about idealizing somebody, to have such a great idea of somebody and how that makes you create an imaginative picture of that person that makes you love him/her in such an idolatric way that makes you feel small and weak in comparison to the greatness and the qualities you associate with the loved person. That happened once in my life and I felt like I was a really weak person, in comparison to the "divinity" of the woman I loved. Afet some years I could really detect how wrong I was in that conception of a relationship, but the fact is that this kind of love was really inspiring to me as that person turned out to have a magical and divine, although unreal, quality that made me love her in such a desperate and unbalanced way.

General Comment:do you remember the first person you feel in love with? really, fell in love with? trusted with everything? do you remember the rush of hormones? the intensity? do you remember how it felt when it ended? the raw pain, the raw ache. you never hurt the same about anyone again. you'll never feel exactly the same about anyone else, again. there are new loves, different loves, but none that compare to your first love. the first cut is always the worst because you haven't learned how to cope and defend yourself from the pain yet.

that is what this song makes me think of- but in a poetic, elegantly painful kind of way.
