Lyrics for Lullaby as interpreted by oofus

Lullaby Lyrics
On candystripe legs the spiderman comes
Softly through the shadow of the evening sun
Stealing past the windows of the blissfully dead
Looking for the victim shivering in bed
Searching out fear in the gathering gloom and
Suddenly!
A movement in the corner of the room!
And there is nothing I can do
When I realise with fright
That the spiderman is having me for dinner tonight!

Quietly he laughs and shaking his head
Creeps closer now
Closer to the foot of the bed
And softer than shadow and quicker than flies
His arms are all around me and his tongue in my eyes
"Be still be calm be quiet now my precious boy
Don't struggle like that or I will only love you more
For it's much too late to get away or turn on the light
The spiderman is having you for dinner tonight"

And I feel like I'm being eaten
By a thousand million shivering furry holes
And I know that in the morning I will wake up
In the shivering cold

And the spiderman is always hungry...

Perhaps "and the spiderman is always hungry.." is speaking of depression. How you can never escape it,no matter what you do you'll always have the emotional scars.

I think it means an addiction. "Candystripe legs" symbolizes the nurse administering the methadone to help get rid of the crave but he wakes up in the shivering cold because only the real thing can satisfy his desire for what is unwholesome. Therefore he is stuck in his nightmare of addiction.

This song is about drug addiction to me. "On candystripe legs the spiderman comes.." When spinning around the lines of a candystripe give off an almost hypnotic effect, and the "spiderman" could be the manfeisation of his drug addiction. "Softly through the shadow of the evening sun
Stealing past the windows of the blissfully dead
Looking for the victim shivering in bed..." Boredom or lack of sleep usually leads to an intenise urge to take something. "And I feel like I'm being eaten
By a thousand million shivering furry holes..." He obivously gave into his addiction and maybe the shirving furry holes can be the feeling of his heroin injections...? "And the spiderman is always hungry..." He's always going to need a fix.

But when you look at a tarantula (for example) you see that it's legs resemble candy sticks.

This song means just that, nightmares. How things that are supernatural are so real. To me it means many different things. One of which is abuse. I also agree with the drug meaning too. Also I think it has to do with relationship "For its much too late to get away" when you realize you have already made a commitment.... My thoughts are soo boggled. I listen to this song constantly I love The Cure.

(Putting the whole drug thing into mind) "Don't struggle like that or I will only love you more," can symbolize that with a lot of people with addictions, no matter how hard you try to stop, you only crave it more, thus putting the "or I will only love you more." lyric into play... just a thought.

To me, it seems like no comment here is wrong. Drug addiction, love addiction, nightmares, depression - all are an obsessive way of thought, in some form. The song sounds creepy, but also thrilling - the way you crave something obsessively although you know it's bad for you. The bit "His arms are all around me..." makes me think of a sexual fixation, whereas the line "On candystripe legs..." makes me think of hallucination. Either way, it all points to obsession from where I'm standing, and is so good that I've become obsessed with listening to it!:P

A friend of mine had told me that this song is actually about oral sex. The lyrics "I feel like I'm being eaten By a thousand million shivering furry holes" and "Be still be calm be quiet now my precious boy Don't struggle like that or I will only love you more" and of course "the spiderman is always hungry." It seems to make sense. I dont think its about reacurring dreams though. Some cure songs are enver what they seem. But take it in anyway you want.

it's not about oral sex. i can see how it might be depression or an addiction, but Robert Smith said this song is actually about a freaky dream he had where he was in bed and a big spider thing came after him......so who knows. great song tho!

This song is about Sexual Abuse regardless of what Rob Smith says, the way the song describes these sensations is comparable to rape.

the video was featured on their greatest hits disc DVD from 2002 (?) soz I really need to check my dates about stuff lol anyway I heard that it's got something to do with comic books Robert used to read when he was younger, about *SPIDERMAN* and some guy with candystripe legs :) although this was from some article from like 1987 or summat lol

Robert Smith based this song on a poem called The Spider and The Fly by Mary Howitt. Just go to this link and see the poem for yourselves

I think it's about Robert Smith's creepy dining experience with Peter Parker's alter-ego.

dude you guys are funny. if the person who wrote/performed the song says it's about a nightmare he had, why can't you accept that it IS about a nightmare he had? no, he didn't base it on that poem, though they are similar. you can find the video on Yahoo Launch. launch.yahoo.com (you'll need to be a member of yahoo to view more than 1 or 2 videos).
