Lyrics for Just Like Heaven as interpreted by oofus

Just Like Heaven Lyrics
"Show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream" she said
"The one that makes me laugh" she said
And threw her arms around my neck
"Show me how you do it and I promise you
I promise that I'll run away with you
I'll run away with you"

Spinning on that dizzy edge
I kissed her face and kissed her head
And dreamed of all the different ways I had
To make her glow
"Why are you so far away?" she said
"Why won't you ever know that I'm in love with you?
That I'm in love with you?"

You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Strange as angels
Dancing in the deepest oceans
Twisting in the water
You're just like a dream...

Daylight licked me into shape
I must have been asleep for days
And moving lips to breathe her name
I opened up my eyes
And found myself alone
Alone
Alone above a raging sea
That stole the only girl I loved
And drowned her deep inside of me

You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Just like heaven

"In my opinion it is about misunderstandings between lovers or rather the incapability of telling those we love most about our feelings. we can even b concerned w/ each other, noticing it too late or just having converstion problems - until we lose the people we love."

Lady_Elvenhair, I think I may just go and follow your advice. I also agree with you on the song's meaning. :)

Nicola has an excellent point. I recommend looking up the poem and if nothing else, you'll see alot of parallels.

woohoo!
I just figured out what this song means (to me atleast).
He's dreaming, and he is with the girl of his dreams, no pun intended.

"And dreamed of all the different ways I had
To make her glow"
In his dreams, anything is possible; he can do tricks that make her "laugh" or "scream". He's the man in other words.

"Dancing in the deepest oceans
Twisting in the water
You're just like a dream..."

I love the last line, "you're just like a dream". It describes that moment perfectly when you are having the best dream ever, everything is perfect. Then you get the suspicious feeling it's "just like a dream".

"Alone above a raging sea
That stole the only girl I loved
And drowned her deep inside of me"

"Inside of me" shows that she was in his head. The raging sea could perhaps be his mind, where she would eventually be lost (not many people remember their dreams.)

"Why are you so far away?" This shows that even though they are close together, she is far away from him. This might be eluding to the fact that the woman he dreamed of is real, and alive somewhere, and the "raging sea" could be dividing them. Or something.

I love this song =D

Does anybody think the "just like heaven" movie is based upon this song?

It storyline reminds me of my meaning of this song.

this song used to give me such a high when i was going out with this guy lets just call him asshole =]

we used to play it in his car when he would drop me home at 3:30 am in the morning and we'd hold hands and get lost on the motorways in sydney. but we didn't care because at the time this song encapsulated everything we were at the time.

he would always look at me at these distinct lines

"You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely"

now those lines just remind me of him soft and only. you know that feeling when you're just so in love with someone the thought of them is just so appealing. the softness of their body lips smile... and only them could have this appeal to you every one else seems harsh and cold. he always said i was a bit lost. a bit confusing and strange. so i can relate to this song a lot.

i still really miss this guy pity he broke my heart, im still not over thim. i can't stand this song now it makes me feel so sick. but im looking forward to having that euphoric feeling when listening to it again when i feel this way about another person.

I actually thought of Annabell Lee when I first heard this song too, it really does seem loosely based on the poem. It's a great poem by the way, if you've never read it you should check it out.

This song is simply amazing, it's one of those songs that will just never get old. I can't believe I went so many years without getting into these guys.

I like all of your comments. I've been listening to the cure for 30 years (yes, I'm that old) and several of their songs are ambiguous. Music is in a sense meant to marry ambiguity.
Sure it's about sex, and it's about love too, and an old girlfriend who drowned, whether literally or metaphorically doesn't really matter. What does matter is that the moment of ecstasy that encapsulates in this song immortalizes whoever she is forever, and whatever she meant to her forever, and that is really the only true love in this world, one that can no longer be changed by time, one that in a sense is frozen in time by memory. Almost like our idea of what heaven is, wouldn't you say?
Robert Smith once said that it doesn't matter if people like the lyrics or the beat, but if they can find a way to dance to his music, any kind of dancing, then he knows he's done it right. Well, congratulations, for dancing, with words, thoughts, and anything.
This has always been my favorite song of all time because it does make you sad, and it does make you happy, and how can you not sing to it? But it doesn't have to mean anything so concrete because the things it references like love and all that isn't concrete either, and neither is the ocean. The only thing that is concrete are the chords, the words, and the music, so enjoy.

This song is a beautifully written tale of two lovers who suffer from a common problem ... the guy is involved in the moment, the physical, the sex, the feeling that he can and enjoys the ego boost he gets from knowing he can take her to places she could previously only have dreamed about.

He is so infatuated with her that he loses his connection with her, from a personal relationship perspective. She finds that despite her deepest love for him, he's pulling away, his powerfully physical intimacy making him somehow distant. So then she also pulls away and it is all too late for him.

When he finally realizes what he's done, it's after a time of debauchery and revelry ... and it dawns upon him that she has left him. He smothered her with the only way he knew how to show his affection, but it wasn't what she was really looking for.

This song was our garage band's favourite cover [well, maybe it was my favourite anyway]. I did keyboards and rhythm guitar. Even if our lead singer was more Dinosaur Jr than Robert Smith, it was probably the song in which we came together as a band the most. Everyone doing their part with perfect timing ... most probably because we loved the song so.

And that was 15 years ago ...

I noticed that some folk had determined that it was shallow ... well if you feel that way about love songs, go ahead and label it thus, but really, hit or not, it has all the depth of the greatest of Cure songs. It's just coated a little fluffier than their darker moments.

Nah...'still think it's about eatin' pussy. Sloppy, messy, looks-like-you've-been-eating-a-glazed-donut-'cause-you-didn't-wash-your-face-afterward kind of muff diving. My theory only, though.

i find this song to be superficial and metaphorical

i think its talking about a strictly sexual relationship and later finds out that they both are in love

while they are still in love he finds out that she is dead and that he is still in love with her

(it is reported that ones of roberts smith girlfriend did drown and die)

THATS MY INTERPRETATION OF THE SONG. IM NOT HERE TO ARGUE JUST TO GIVE MY OPINION

JUST GIVE ME FEEDBACK ON WHAT YOU THINK OF MY OPINION

The sound of it is too romantic to be about cunnilingus. It's a song about true love and how people are late to realise it. And I believe the distance may not be only metaphorical.

Oh, it's not about eating pussy you pervert idiot, it's just a love song. It's a bit cliche, but beautiful. It's definetely about lost love.
I'm not a huge Cure fan, but I just love some of their stuff. Mostly the short cathcy songs like this one, hanging garden and lovecats. This is one of the best songs I've heard from them. Really love it. Robert Smith has the most melancholy voice ever.

it doesnt need to have a plain meaning, music is suppossed to be ambiguous, undeciphered, transgresist... who cares if its about love or sex, the thing is that u can feel it, relate to it in every way possible and feel the awakening of its words...
