Lyrics for Just Like Heaven as interpreted by oofus

Just Like Heaven Lyrics
"Show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream" she said
"The one that makes me laugh" she said
And threw her arms around my neck
"Show me how you do it and I promise you
I promise that I'll run away with you
I'll run away with you"

Spinning on that dizzy edge
I kissed her face and kissed her head
And dreamed of all the different ways I had
To make her glow
"Why are you so far away?" she said
"Why won't you ever know that I'm in love with you?
That I'm in love with you?"

You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Strange as angels
Dancing in the deepest oceans
Twisting in the water
You're just like a dream...

Daylight licked me into shape
I must have been asleep for days
And moving lips to breathe her name
I opened up my eyes
And found myself alone
Alone
Alone above a raging sea
That stole the only girl I loved
And drowned her deep inside of me

You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Just like heaven

Sounds to me like it's about people with a gap in affection. Like Robert and the girl both have these great times together, but Robert builds it up to too much. He gets this emotional "raging sea" of feelings towards her and in a sense drowns her in it but smothering the simple good times with a more powerful feeling that she doesn';t seem to share.
But yea, I agree, It's bloody brilliant.

I think this song is about puppy love. When you first meet someone and things are so intense before real life gets in the way.

This song is about kissing and hyperventalating. Thats what Robert has said in interviews, but whatever, its a fun song and whenever they play it on 80's night, people go crazy and start hugging one another!

I think it's rather shocking that people find this song to be superficial. If one listens to the lyrics, it's classic Cure... a dreamy beggining with a depressing turn. Robert is singing about the woman of his dreams, and then realizing when he wakes up that she is exactly that... a dream. Listen to their song, "How Beautiful You Are" from '87, it's in the same hue. It's classic Cure to reflect on the impossibility of dreams and ideals, and "Just Like Heaven" is a pop song that employs this mantra.

Probably my fav song of all time. from the moment i heard it first in 1987 and saw the video I knew I would like this band. I remember thinking how different they all looked and sounded from anything else I had known before ("gothic?") The song has trademark Cure keyboards and Porl's signature guitar lick.. And the video compliments the song perfectly. Beautifully sad. Yeah, it IS a shame it's so popular. True Cure fans want to keep it for themselves.

The intro to this song is genius on how each instrument in the band builds off each other with the drum start, then into the bass line, then first string guitar. Then the second guitar echos the first, the synth/piano kicks in followed by that magical guitar solo. By the time robert smith starts with show me show it's beyond perfect. It's just like heaven.

Anyone heard the cover by Blatant Finger? I just heard it now and I was disgusted. They turned into some kind of rock anthem!!! It lost all of the song's atmosphere and meaning. why do people insist on covering cure songs!?!!??!?!

He is on the stage singing a song about a girl that he left for his music.

Breakdown

The first part of the song describes her and how much she loved him.

The "You soft and Only - You lost and lonley" is sung as "You who, soft and only, You who lost and lonley" as if he is looking for her in the dark. His eyes are closed while he is thinking about her.

He has his eyes closed and is imagining her being with him.

The next verse talks about him being away. He is away on the road with his music.

The third verse is where all is revieled.
Until this point he is dreaming of this girl that he left to go on the road.

"Daylight licked me into shape
I must have been asleep for days
And moving lips to breathe her name
I opened up my eyes
And found myself alone
Alone
Alone above a raging sea
That stole the only girl I loved
And drowned her deep inside of me
"
Daylight licked me into shape means that the spotligthts of the stage hit him and snapped him out of his dreaming.

He is singing a song about her "moved his lips to breath her name" .

"..and found myself alone above a raging sea" is him looking out from the stage at the audience. Have you ever seen an audience from that point of view... all waving and movement as if an ocean of people are in front of him.

Finally, the sea that stole the only girl he knows is that the people in his audience are the ones that took him away from his girl.

Get it. It's about being on stage away from the girl he loves because he is on the road doing concerts to a raging sea of people. When he is up on stage, he sometimes dreams about her with his eyes closed until something snaps him out of it. In this case it was "daylight" or in reality, the spotlights.

Next time you listen to the song, you will figure it out. It's actually very good poetry.

"Show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream" she said
"The one that makes me laugh" she said
And threw her arms around my neck
"Show me how you do it and I promise you
I promise that I'll run away with you
I'll run away with you"

Spinning on that dizzy edge
I kissed her face and kissed her head
And dreamed of all the different ways I had
To make her glow
"Why are you so far away?" she said
"Why won't you ever know that I'm in love with you?
That I'm in love with you?"

You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Strange as angels
Dancing in the deepest oceans
Twisting in the water
You're just like a dream...

Daylight licked me into shape
I must have been asleep for days
And moving lips to breathe her name
I opened up my eyes
And found myself alone
Alone
Alone above a raging sea
That stole the only girl I loved
And drowned her deep inside of me

You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Just like heaven

I adore this song, i interpret the lyrics as describing sex in some sort of way, but more generally about lust and love, angst and pain. You may not agree with me, but thats just the way my mind works.

I LOVE this song so much.
Even though it was before my time by a little I am still in love with it.
Gatsbys American Dream did an amazing cover of it.
I think either way you interperate it its still an amazingly beautiful song

OMG This is like my favorite song ever. It's so sweet. I don't care what it's really supposed to mean, all I know is that I love it, and I hope these weird hardcore bands don't cover it like they did other 80's songs. ((Or I'll beat their asses)) I love this song.

There's a few ways it could be interperated (sp?).
(1) The fact that Robert Smith acctually had a girlfriend who did drown... and is about her.
(2) About him dreaming about a girl.
(3) Sex (Just read the first few lines and you'll get the picture.)
(4) You know how you love/ like someone and while your doing something... in the back of your mind you're always thinking about them? It could be that too.

I remember first hearing this song when I was little and then heard it again about 2 years ago and finnally picked up on the fact that it's The Cure. My friend was in love with them at the time... and got me hooked on "Boys Don't Cry". Ever since I knew who they were I've loved them.
Alot of their songs are kind of ironic. In the sense that they have these deep meanings sometimes really depressing and sad yet the music is still upbeat and almost always reminds you of good times.

And Robert Smith is probably the only guy old enough to be my Dad who can pull of wearing lipstick and having hair that looks like he licked an electrical outlet. And be amazing.
