Lyrics for A Day in the Life as interpreted by Ice

A Day in the Life Lyrics
I read the news today, oh boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well I just had to laugh
I saw the photograph

He blew his mind out in a car
He didn't notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They'd seen his face before
Nobody was really sure
If he was from the House of Lords

I saw a film today, oh boy
The English Army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
But I just had to look
Having read the book

I'd love to turn you on

Woke up, fell out of bed
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup
And looking up I noticed I was late

Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke
And somebody spoke and I went into a dream

I heard the news today, oh boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes
To fill the Albert Hall

I'd love to turn you on

I have a question. Can anyone tell me what the last verse means. How many holes does it take to fill Albert Hall? 4,000? and the I'd love to turn you on part - what's that got to do with it all??

The ending is a music being played backwards, that is why it sounds weird. I think it is awsome especially if you are driving your car in the express way at night. As far as for the song its self it really is one of the best songs of the beatles.

Does anyone even read the posts???!!! People keep asking questions that have already been asked AND answered. As far as the whole "Paul is dead" thing goes you guys should check out this book titled Paul Was The Walrus. Several hundred pages about the supposed hoax. If I'm not mistaken Leanord Bernstein claimed that the ending of A Day In The Life was his favorite piece of music ever. I'd like to turn you on...Does that really need an explanation? LSD anyone?

zippy, you might be interested to know that the 4000 holes comes from the 17.01.67 edition of Far and Near, a column written for the British Newspaper The Daily Mail. Terry Doran (the man from the motor trade mentioned in She's Leaving Home) was the person that suggested The Albert Hall to rhyme with small. The film about the English army was called "How I Won The War", and was a film that John himself starred in. It was premiered in October 1967.

I didn't see this anywhere above but for another far-fetched account of what the "4000 holes..." lyric means:

4000 holes in Blackburn, Lancashire(a riot broke out in Blackburn, specifically at the Albert Hall, and 4000 "assHOLES" were arrested)
And though the holes were rather small(small as in young)
They had to count them all
And now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall(4000 teenage assholes can fit in the Albert Hall)

This is the account of an apparently old man who was already middle aged in the 60s and apparently preached the evils of every single song. He had almost every Beatles song Revolver on linked to drugs, anarchy, satanism or proved it in some way anti-establishment. I found his site funny.

That's an interesting account of the lyric, which I have never come across in any books on the subject of this song which I have read. Even though it's rather... graphic, shall we say, it sounds like something that one of the Beatles would draw on, doesn't it...

this is possibly one of the best songs the beatles ever did. it's got all kindsa deep meanings and then mccartney comes in with his really lightweight riff. i think it's just a day in the life of two different people. hince lennon and mccartney singin two different songs but with the same beat and what not.

and the ending to it was just to blow everbody away with the greatness of the album

wow. this song is so trippy. i love it. that's what great about so many beatles songs, the slurred sounding vocal notes, it makes it so awesome.

this song is just great. if i was to make a CD of my favorite beatles songs, this would definitely be on there. the whoel thing is so crazy, it's just great. i wished the end went on forever.

yeah probably the best beatles song , i just love the different stlyes and the different elements that are all woven throughout this song, especially at the end when it all explodes in a cacophany of sound.

no one mentioned it, i dont think:

i heard that the rising orchestration at the end, followed by the pause, then the mighty E chord is the USA and Russia's nuclear missles being launched. the pause is the missles passing over each other, and the E chord is the explosion when they hit the earth. seems fairly accurate due to the climate at the time - the cold war was heating up ;p

I get the fact that songmeanings is supposed to mean 'What does this song mean to you'. It still trips me out to see how much people enjoy making shit up. The Beatles, much like The Walkmen, or any great bands/artists, are the first ones to admit that their lyrics mean everything and nothing at all. If you like it, just enjoy it and shut the f*ck up.

ophelia219- you're an idiot. all good songs are poetry and poetry has meaning. anyone who's not a complete simpleton enjoys poetry more when they know (and in turn can make their own interrpretation of) its meaning. seems to me like you're the only one who should shut the f*ck up

by the way, no one seems to have put forward a suggestion for what the song means as a whole. Personally I think it's critiquing how disconnected people are from significant events (suggesting, for example that the allies winning the war is nothing more than a fictional movie). The rhythm of paul's verse suggests we're all in too involved in the rat race to care about stuff that really matters

As a beatle maniac, this song is one of the most beutiful written songs by the beatles. This epic song puts both john lennon's writing styles and paul mcarteny's writing styles in the same song which makes it genious and amazing. as for what it means i think it means that bad news sells and good news gets the back page of paper too much.. in the first verse "the news was rather sad" then"a crowd of people stood and stared" was how everyone was interested in the bad news. but in the second verse "the english army had just won the war" then "a crowd of people turned away" means no one was interested in the happy news.... there are other meanings but thats just my take of it..

Anyway...Many of the lyrics in their songs were often exaggerated and saturated with hidden meaning (a.k.a. inside jokes). This was done specifically for those who attempted to find meaning in their lyrics when there was nothing significant to be found. Of course, if even by mistake, their lyrics became poetry by default. Good music and lyrical content cannot be denied.

Although people are free to sniff out interpretations as much as they desire to do so, it still fascinates me. It's like watching a dog chase his own tail. You're going nowhere fast...and that is exactly the way that it was intended to be.

This is the last song on the sgt Peppers, I see the album as being one grand concert and this song represents what happens one the concert has finished. I think the lyrics are about how you can be disaffected the world around you, although you see things happening and they seem real. This is not so much like Pink Floyds Comfortably Numb in which the singer has become numb to the pain that surrounds him. Here we have what appears to be a cynical take on newspapers and telivision. It seems to comment upon the way they try to cause reactions of sadness and disgust, in the end its just another day in the life where you got up late rushed to get the bus and thought about sex. It could be that John was saying that even though you may be famous, dreaming about love, sex and in his case making beautiful music is what you think about most
of the time. Another day in the life for Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Very interesting pedro49 this was a concept album
and pauls idea was to make them not be beatles and sorta changed therye name to sgt peppers (not really but at the time they were almost fed up wit all the shit they had to put up with as beatles) and with this album they kinda attacked all those issues like in a day in the life how pedro48 stated it clearly awsome album and one of the gr8st songs ever

In response to Cherub Rock's post, Something was one of their most famous songs and it was written by George. Strawberry Fields was written by John. Many of their famous songs weren't by Paul.

In response to your post ^ many of their famous songs were indeed written by Paul, Hey Jude, Yesterday, Let it Be, Long and winding road, and there are many many more he wrote which are famous but ill take up to much space typing them out , Paul and John wrote most of the songs....and it wasnt until the beatles later years that George really became reconized for his great song writing ability..but all in all john and paul were the creating force behind the beatles. Paul also wrote the middle part to A Day in The life.

What about All You Need is Love? I am the Walrus? Ballad of John and Yoko? Come Together? These weren't written by Paul.
Anyway, a lot of them were written by Paul but not all.

no ass, i know plenty, thanks, paul held john's creativity back soo much it wasnt even funny. yea i know john got a lil weird towards they end of his career, but thats only because he was with wacko yoko. but before that he was so cutting edge and creative, ask any educated beatle fan, they'll tell ya....paul was just basically the justin timberlake of his time, if you will.
