Lyrics for A Night Like This as interpreted by oofus

A Night Like This Lyrics
Say goodbye on a night like this
If it's the last thing we ever do
You never looked as lost as this
Sometimes it doesn't even look like you
It goes dark
It goes darker still
Please stay
But I watch you like I'm made of stone
As you walk away...

I'm coming to find you if it takes me all night
A witch hunt for another girl
For always and ever is always for you
Your trust
The most gorgeously stupid thing I ever cut in the world

Say hello on a day like today
Say it everytime you move
The way that you look at me now
Makes me wish I was you
It goes deep
It goes deeper still
This touch
And the smile and the shake of your head...

I'm coming to find you if it takes me all night
Can't stand here like this anymore
For always and ever is always for you
I want it to be perfect
Like before...
I want to change it all

I want to change

hmm why hasnt anyone written about this song? This is such a beautiful song, its about wanting someone who used to want you too.......... someone who's trust you've betrayed, but youd do anything to get them back with you, kind of similar feelings to boys dont cry i guess

annnnyway. this song. one of my favorites.
im not sure what this song was written about. but it always reminds me of that conversation that ends most relationships. the 'do you still want to be with me' one.

Every time something that seems overly dramatic happens to me, this song is playing somewhere, either in my head, or winamp, or what have you. Not that I'm obsessed with this song, but it's like the black cat, it's just always there. About the meaning, typical Cure fair. Just enjoy it and shut up

Man, this song is the greatest, but anyways, it's really about how sometimes things are just perfect, and you never want them to end. Sometimes you just wish you could reach up and grab a moment, and keep it with you forever.....

I think that of the tree versions of this song (Thins one, PMM's, and Smashing Pumkins), this one is the happiest.... this is definately the one where he gets her back. That's not the case with the other two.

This is a great song, but I'm kinda more partial to James Iha's cover even though he can't sing. It just seems more appropriate as a slower, sadder song.

My favorite Cure song, and one of my favorite songs of all time in general. A beautiful expression of the transition between the denial of a loss and the moment where you realize it's final.

this song is about HIS imperfection..and now his regret. Its beyond us, we're all human, we all mess up-- like giving up the best thing in your life..

and it is always hard to move on and accept the past..

I think its about that moment of a break-up when the words have just been said and all the sadness of emotion are strong. You still care and remember how you loved and why you loved. That slight doubt that appears when you have said the words that end the relationship and the guilt you feel. When you question it all and wonder if you made the right decision. When you know you want that closeness that you can never have again. The feelings were real even though its over.

I wanted to know if anyone had heard the song "Everything will be alright" by The Killers (see lyrics below). When I first heard the song I thought the intro sounded very reminiscent of the Cure. Then there was the line "I'm coming to find you if it takes me all night". It not only has the same topic, but feeling of desperation of the end of a relationship. Don't think it is a coincidence, but did anyone else think the same?

Everything will be alright

I believe in you and me
I'm coming to find you
If it takes me all night
Wrong until you make it right
And I won't forget you
At least I'll try
And run, and run tonight
Everything will be alright
Everything will be alright
Everything will be alright
Everything will be alright

I was out shopping for a doll
To say the least, I thought I've seen them all
But then you took me by surprise
I'm dreaming bout those dreamy eyes
I never knew, I never knew
So take your suitcase, cause I don't mind
And baby doll, I meant it every time
You don't need to compromise
I'm dreaming bout those dreamy eyes
I never knew, I never knew
But it's alright...

Everything will be alright
Everything will be alright
Everything will be alright
Everything will be alrigh

Check out the version by James Iha (of the Smashing Pumpkins). His is better than the original.

One of the first songs I ever heard from the Cure - this was the song, along with push, that really got me into the cure. How good are they, and how good is this song!!!. It will always be a part of my life even though I dont listen to it much any more....

My take on this beautiful song for what it's worth. The first verse is in the past with him breaking up with a girl. The part of him that still loves her wants to comfort her since she's hurt, but the colder part lets her go.

The chorus, he's decided he made a mistake and wants another go (the words are wrong here, it's "wishing for another go", not "witch hunt..." and "just the most gorgeous...")

Now to the present, he's found her but she's moved on and is over him. The way she looks at him; at ease-no pain, makes him wish he wasn't feeling such pain. She smiles and says no.

He's still searching...

Arg, people, please check before you write in that the lyrics are wrong. The lyrics are correct: "witchhunt for another girl" and "your trust." It's in the liner notes.

This song gives me shivers, it's so great. The live version on the Show album is even better than the studio version imo. You can hear the emotion in Robert's voice more. Aaah Robert Smith, thank you for making such beautiful music...

Great song! This is what Smith said about "A Night Like This":

"This is what 'plastic passion' originally sounded like. The words were written in the rain. I was upset..."

"Musically, A Night Like This is sort of Plastic Passion slowed down - I always liked the 'Roxy musicish' chord sequence of Plastic Passion, but hated how it turned out."

So seven years later they did it right in "A Night Like This". The entire "Head On The Door" is excellent.
