Lyrics for A Forest as interpreted by oofus

A Forest Lyrics
Come closer and see
See into the trees
Find the girl
While you can
Come closer and see
See into the dark
Just follow your eyes
Just follow your eyes

I hear her voice
Calling my name
The sound is deep
In the dark
I hear her voice
And start to run
Into the trees
Into the trees

Into the trees

Suddenly I stop
But I know it's too late
I'm lost in a forest
All alone
The girl was never there
It's always the same
I'm running towards nothing
Again and again and again

To me, this seems like a metaphore for the narrator's experiences in love. After all, the whole concept of looking for love in another person means looking at them as something other than they really are, and after you realize they are a person and not your "beloved", you are left alone, hence:

Suddenly I stop
But I know it's too late
I'm lost in a forest
All alone
The girl was never there
It's always the same
I'm running towards nothing
Again and again and again

the girl is the "american dream"

I can see how that would work, but I don't see it in this song... Interesting theory, though.

freakishfae hit the nail on the head.

Looking for something inside someone that doesn't exist within that person. Putting all your eggs in one basket.

Come closer and see
See into the trees
Find the girl
While you can
Come closer and see
See into the dark
Just follow your eyes
Just follow your eyes

this is about thinking you see love, and hoping it is real. it's about staying cautious at the same time, and taking things as they come.

I hear her voice
Calling my name
The sound is deep
In the dark
I hear her voice
And start to run
Into the trees
Into the trees

this is the feeling that you know it has to be love, and you start making sacrifices, and start realizing how deeply you love them. (the "into the trees")

Suddenly I stop
But I know it's too late
I'm lost in a forest
All alone
The girl was never there
It's always the same
I'm running towards nothing
Again and again and again

after all the sacrifices you've made and after something you felt so strongly about, the other person does something to betray or hurt you. it starts to make you think that maybe the whole time you're love was an illusion....and that again, you are going to have to search for that missing love.

Great song, the way I interprted the song was a bit more abstract. To me this song is the all-encompassing pursuit of a goal/ideal, only to be disillusioned in the process, and ending up more confused and distraught than before.

muadi-boy hit it on the head; and this goes for most songs, they work on basically any level to which you apply them. But if you listen to the cure, you're probably a heart-heavy fool who gets hung up on failure...but to me, that's cool. And if you listen to the cure, you are listening to know where the girl has gone, or why she was never there; was it me, was it her, or is just how the world is?--so I'm saying, for the greater mass of people, for the people most like RS, this song is about love

To me, this is a song about someone who knows that his/her end will be soon if he (or she) doesn't find a reason to go on. This person keeps love in high value, because apparentially it is what he/she is looking for - but the one this person loves seems to be distant or doesn't want to be loved. And this is not the first time when something like this happens, and
it is extremely frustrating.

I read in an interview that this is based on "an experience" that Robert had when he was younger. He did not elaborate.

The song is about trees being analogous to lifeless, pointless, pablum people. And trying to find beauty and love, and life in a "forest". But only losing yourself instead.

Again, pay close attention to the music, and how every melody in the song is another tree sprouting from the ground into the sky before your face.

The da dum! da dum, da dum, da dum! are four more trees between you and what you dream of.

I always thought this song was about polish sausages....
Oh well, guess not.
Still, I'm convinced that this is one of the best songs ever written.

that is pritty clever if the girl is the "american dream" like the girl was never there... but i don't think it is that. i suppose it can be interpretted into many things like that though. this is my dad's favourite ever song. its a class song! how cool is my dad!

MurderRapeLove,
Interesting theory about the tempo of the song.
I always figured the da-dum is the rhythm of the protagonist running through the trees?

This sogn has a very german feel to it. In the clip Robert has no make-up and his trademark hair is absent.

Your idea's definitely possible, bradley. I'm looking at the song in direct note form as if on sheet music. It's called a forest, and all the "da-dums"start on the same note and shoot up to different heights. And basically all the other instruments including the thump-chk! drums are sprouting in the same way, so the song really does appear to be "A FOREST" of notes.

It's really pretty ingeniously done.
