Lyrics for Carry That Weight as interpreted by Ice

Carry That Weight Lyrics
Boy, you're going to carry that weight
Carry that weight a long time
I never give you my pillow
I only send you invitations
And in the middle of the celebrations I break down

(this is part of a medley on Abbey Road) the I never give you..... couplets are about getting very close to a relationship with someone where there is a mutual feeling, but never managing to actually take the last step. the carry that weight bit is about having to deal with difficult things that dont go away quickly, but the idea of carrying them...you keep going. abbey road is one of the best albums ever.

Golden Slumbers Kiss Your Eyes

GOLDEN slumbers kiss your eyes,
Smiles awake you when you rise.
Sleep pretty wantons, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby;
Rock them, rock them, lullaby.

Care is heavy, therefore sleep you;
You are care, and care must keep you.
Sleep pretty wantons, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby;
Rock them, rock them, lullaby.

Thomas Dekker - 17th Century

PS: Kiss off, McCartney!

I didn't think "Rock them" was a phrase used in the 17th century???

Am I the only one who thinks this would have made a good song on its own?

Looks like Cyrano_de_Texas his English Renaissance poetry.

It's actually the second song in the Golden Slumbers Medley off of the album Abbey Road.

Psomion, I took that "rock them" part as meaning "rock your babies to sleep."

"Sleep pretty wantons, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby;
Rock them, rock them, lullaby."

It made sense to me, in context.

Keep in mind that the song was written with the realisation in Paul's mind that The Beatles were coming to an end. It might be referring to their having to adapt to "normal" life after being a Beatle- for the rest of their lives they would all carry the weight of having been a part of a 1960s pop group, and it might have made them seem anticlimactic.

I find it odd that the discussion for this song turned into Golden Slumbers! Well, I want to talk about this one... I actually like this part, as I like all the parts of the medley. I feel they should be listened to all together. On a side note, In John's movie Imagine, there's this part where a raggedy man comes to his house and professes his hearing a call from John from Carry That Weight. John had to tell him that they were just writing songs because it was their job (or something of the like). I thought it really cool when John invited him in for some food, looked like the guy could've used some!

Alright, you all may be right but...One night Golden Slumbers was on Paul's mind. He knew he wanted to make a medley but did not know how the second portion would go. With a bit of luck he found the inspiration for this song from his local marijuana dealer....He called him up, waited and when he finally came by, all he had was dirty brick weed...Paul then responded "Boy, your going to carry that weight a long time". Perhaps????

NO! Fuckin hell, WHY do people support that CRACKPOT theory that every Beatles song is related, about, and/or inspired by drugs?! Fucking hell, I need an aspirin.

This song was written by Paul, and it was a shout to John...that because of him breaking the band apart with Yoko Ono, he was going to have to "carry the weight" of having broken up THE BEATLES to be with this girl for the rest of his life. It was also written about himself, because after Brian Epstein died and Paul started managing the band, he realized how much of a huge undertaking it really was, and that he had to "carry the weight" of running this megaband.

"I never give you my pillow, I only send you my invitations" is probably my favourite line on this album. After the heartbreaking Golden Slumbers going into the momentarily more upbeat Carry That Weight, to suddenly have this reprise of You Never Give Me Your Money would be completely beautiful enough. But then the lyrics themselves. It's like a relationship that is no longer working, or that will never begin. I feel like the former. I don't know how to describe the feeling that it gives me, just the saddest thing ever.

This is about how one feels toward having a second lover in their life when they already love someone. Having a second lover is a lot of weight and all the lyics follow how someone may feel about a that "side" woman...

To me, this is about some kind of relationship that went bad. The narrator realizes he screwed up the relationship and now that he realizes how much he misses the girl, he has this deep feeling of regret that he's going to carry for a long time (the weight). Instead of her sharing his pillow, now he just gives her invitations which she rejects.

The last line is my favorite. I think the narrator has tried to move on with his life and is going out to parties and whatnot, but no matter how much fun he is having at the celebrations, the memory of the girl keeps haunting him because he knows he will never get her back even though he needs her. He's gonna carry that weight a long time.

The Beatles were not a "1960's pop group"
