I'll be the girl with the long blond hair
And the really pale skin, if you care
I sit in the corner of the room
Cross-legged and quiet, filled with doom, mmhm

I never ever liked the smell in here
It's cold and wet and reeks of beer
The lights are turned out permanently
But that's OK 'cause I don't want to see

Wayne
Wait for me
And take me up in your hot air balloon
And feed me cotton candy
Wayne
Pray for me
'Cause I'll be there in a couple of years
Until then, wait for me

Who's the strange lady with the big silly hair
And berries on her face, dressed like a pear
Do I really have to hold her hand
And pretend she's mommy, your wife and man
When I know you're not my mommy

It's crowded and I feel lost in here
I'm trying to find a familiar fear
I look everywhere but I just can't see
There's not anything that reminds me of me, oh

Wayne
Wait for me
Take me up in your hot air balloon
And feed me cotton candy
Wayne
Pray for me
'Cause I'll be there in a couple of years
Until then, wait for me

You made me fresh as flowers
Under these rocks and stones

Wayne
Wait for me
And take me up in your hot air balloon
And feed me cotton candy
Wayne
Pray for me
'Cause I'll be there in a couple of years
Until then wait for me, no oh oh
Take me in your hot air balloon
And feed me cotton candy
Wayne
Pray for me
'Cause I'll be there in a couple of years
Until then, wait for me

General Comment:This song can be hard figure out the meaning without seeing the video because in the video there is a car with a blown engine representing the home or family relationship. You have a little girl who doesn't know her mom and a father laying in the recovery position. The girl is also disaccosiated from her father because she refers to him as wayne instead of dad. This is suggestive that she has not been growing in a functional family unit. In the song it refers to another woman suggesting the girl has to take the backseat in the family unit while wayne it coping and recovering this other woman is dealing with it but, the litte girl doesnt mind because she doesn't really understand yet what wayne is going through because its normal to her. Wayne has been a neglectful father and maybe in a couple years she could help him cope but, he is using alcohol to cope. In the video they form a circle of clothes around the car and chantel and the little girl lay on the ground in the fetal position while wayne lays in the recovery position this combined with the car actualy forms a peace symbol from the sky or if you flip it upside down it stands for anarchy. A plane flys overhead and sees this but, doesnt land to help possibly meaning everyone can see this but, no one swoops in to help the little girl. I dont know thats kinda what I got from it.

Song Meaning:I think she was carting around her little keyboard early in her career and ended up sitting in for an afternoon in a little radio on-air studio that was always a little damp and kept very dark by the boozy host. She was shy, very new and a little nervous when she was introduced to Wayne who couldn't hide the fact that he thought she looked like a child hiding in the back corner of the darkened room. Even so, Wayne always offered an encouraging word and he told her to work hard on her music and "she would get there in a couple of years" and he would "wait for her" to be on the radio. The rest as they say is history.

My Interpretation:I think Wayne is someone she loves who has passed away. Either her father, brother, husband, etc. And she's telling him to "wait for me" because love transcends lifetimes. And she wants Wayne to wait for her in heaven or whatever place he is in.

    A truly sad song.

General Comment:My second favourite Chantal song!

    Interesting interpretations!

I've ALWAYS understood it as a child's perspective BECAUSE of the "hot air balloon" and "cotton candy", so it's interesting for me to see others see it that way too. Also, I saw it as a father-daughter type relationship and never once assumed this man was an older lover or something. Why else would she say "When I know youre not my mommy". The only person she COULD say that too would be a father type figure.

I loved that there is this contrast of the child, with this more mature, more sophisticated orchestra playing in the background. I thought they complimented each other very well. And let me just say, the orchestra and the piano playing are by far the most beautiful contributions to the song.

The chorus, while others may think she's screaming, I interpret it as praying. Pleading and begging for "Wayne" to wait for her.

"Make me as fresh as flowers under these rocks and stones". I get shivers. That one line has so many layers to it. I think of it as "Wayne" being able to make her feel beautiful, even when she didnt feel beautiful about herself.

When I listen to this song, I think about a second cousin of mine who who has a strange girlfriend, lives in his brother's dank, crowded and smelly basement (which I visited for the first time when I was younger). But there was one time where he just made me feel so good about myself. And said such kind and comforting words. Listening to this song, I think of him.

General Comment:This song is so powerful and so unique.
I especially like it because, in my interpretation, it is NOT about a romantic relationship. It is about a young girl's complicated relationship with a father figure type person who is both good and bad. He is good because he takes her up in a hot air balloon - treats her. And he is bad because he drinks (his car smells like beer) and he has a questionable female friend who pretends to be her mother - implies lots of relationships with women, etc..
The girl and 'Wayne' this father figure person, are on a car trip and the car crashes. Wayne dies and the young girl survives and now she must figure out what to do to save herself.
The song is about reliving this experience and her complicated relationship with this man in life and through death.

I get really annoyed when people put a sexual connotation to absolutely every thing in music videos.
To me the song is far from being about that, and it is just as powerful of a song....

    Its one of my favorites!!

General Comment:LOVE this song. But never thought of it as a "wanting to be with" Wayne, for some reason, the "Wayne" for me has always been dead. "Wayne, wait for me, 'cause I'll be there in a couple of years" just made sense to me.

General Comment:Chantal said this song is about death and God from a child's perspective hence the cotton candy and hot air balloon references.

General Comment:At a Chantal concert she said she wrote thissong for her brother... I think it may have had something to deal with the death of their mother.

General Comment:by far one of her best songs,i absolutly love everything about this song, from the lyrics to the music,to me its about a young girl who is in love but is not ready to be in a serious relationship because shes afraid of what might happen, and so she wants to wait until she has matured a bit more and is ready, such a beautiful song.

General Comment:This is a very pretty song. When I first saw this video, I thought to myself, "Who is this girl? She's fricking gorgeous!" I had no clue it was Chantal! I loved the whole imagery of the video, it was so easy to tell that she was aching for this "Wayne" and wanted to be with him/her.
When I listen to this song, I think about my grandmother who passed away a few years ago. I love the chorus that goes "Wait for me, take me up in your hot air ballon and feed me cotton candy", it makes me think about getting away to a place where it's peaceful and perfect (ie. up in a hot air ballon, looking down)
The last part of the chorus:
    "Pray for me
'Cause I'll be there in a couple of years
    Until then, wait for me."
Not to be incredibly morbid or anything, but I think about death when I hear this. When I'm feeling crappy, I think about how great it'll be when I see my grandmother again. That's just my take on this song.
