In my place, in my place
Were lines that I couldn't change
I was lost, oh yeah

I was lost, I was lost
Crossed lines I shouldn't have crossed
I was lost, oh yeah

Yeah how long must you wait for it?
Yeah how long must you pay for it?
Yeah how long must you wait for it?
Oh for it

I was scared, I was scared
Tired and under prepared
But I wait for it

If you go, if you go
Leave me down here on my own
Then I'll wait for you (yeah)

Yeah how long must you wait for it?
Yeah how long must you pay for it?
Yeah how long must you wait for it?
Oh for it

Sing it, please, please, please
Come back and sing to me, to me, me
Come on and sing it out, now, now
Come on and sing it out, to me, me
Come back and sing it

In my place, in my place
Were lines that I couldn't change
And I was lost, oh yeah, oh yeah

My Interpretation:Here is the way I perceive the song:

In my place, in my place
Were lines that I couldn't change
    I was lost, oh yeah
(In his head and/or in his house, there were mistakes that he made, which he couldn't take back)

I was lost, I was lost
Crossed lines I shouldn't have crossed
    I was lost, oh yeah
(He was confused and went too far with his regretful mistakes that he accidentally made)

Yeah how long must you wait for it?
Yeah how long must you pay for it?
Yeah how long must you wait for it?
    Oh for it
(Wondering what his consequences are and when he'll properly be forgiven for the things he did)

I was scared, I was scared
    Tired and under prepared
    But I wait for it
(He was overwhelmed with what he did and has exhausted himself, yet he stands there patiently wanting a response from his love interest)

If you go, if you go
Leave me down here on my own
Then I'll wait for you (yeah)
(The fear of him being dumped would make him feel hopeless and undetermined about where to turn to next)

Yeah how long must you wait for it?
Yeah how long must you pay for it?
Yeah how long must you wait for it?
    Oh for it
    (Same as above)

    Sing it, please, please, please
Come back and sing to me, to me, me
Come on and sing it out, now, now
Come on and sing it out, to me, me
    Come back and sing it
(He's begging this girl not to go. He wants her to stay with him, so they can be happy, like they once were)

In my place, in my place
Were lines that I couldn't change
And I was lost, oh yeah, oh yeah
(He realizes that he was a fool for making his mistakes and wants to make it up to this girl)

Song Meaning:I think the lyrics can be very straight forward.
In his perspective, he's trying to tell her what and how he felt in a certain incident or encounter. He wants to redeem himself but doesn't know if she has the patience for that, but in a sense, he's pleading her to wait for him if not he's gonna wait for her anyways. I like the line where he says, though not a straight forward line, "sing it" "Come back and sing to me." I think meant speak to me.

My Interpretation:Here's my personal interpretation of this song:
This song's about apologizing, asking for forgiveness of someone you cherish. He is asking for that person to be compassionate and to understand that now he is in a sober/rational state to do so. Not in that emotional/confused fog that he was in before. As he begins to ask for forgiveness, he doesn't make excuses about what happened. He simply puts it in the most simplest terms. He doesn't go as far as exaggerating his mistakes so the other person feels sorry for him(like many people who fuck up tend to do this so the other feels sorry for them, in hopes of being instantly forgiven). He's genuine about it and accepts it for what it is. Even if he won't be forgiven in the end, he makes it clear that he will not hold a grudge and the door is always open in case that person changes their mind.
I think this song was written not only to the person whom he is apologizing to, but to himself as well, that he has made peace with it in someway.

In my place, in my place
Were lines that I couldn't change
    I was lost, oh yeah
I was lost, I was lost
Crossed lines I shouldn't have crossed
    I was lost, oh yeah

(he fucked up, whatever it is that he did, he did it unintentionally and didn't realize the impact it would cause down the road. he wasn't rational under those circumstances. he was depressed, was going through internal struggles, etc... meanwhile at the time he didn't realize that he was but obviously his actions showed otherwise, since he was acting out. he doesn't know how else to put it. he repeats several times "i was lost', his genuine feelings shine though. 'crossed lines i shouldn't have crossed' he realizes it after he fucks up and only NOW realizes it was wrong)

How long must you wait for it?

(self explanatory. he is asking himself when will he be forgiven? emphasis on 'must' shows although he is not forceful in obtaining forgiveness, he feels that he is slightly being punished. which stirs dreadful feelings in him because it bothers him)

How long must you pay for it?

(self explanatory as well. it's been a while since he has asked that person for forgiveness, at this point, he accepts that it's their choice to decide if they'll come around or not. but he is still struggling to forgive himself for it.)

I was scared, I was scared
    Tired and under prepared
    But I'll wait for it
If you go, if you go
And leave me down here on my own
    Then I'll wait for you

(he explains he was scared and still is scared because he realizes how big of an impact it was. it ended up ruining a good relationship. 'under prepared'... quote by James Froude "experience teaches slowly and at the cost of mistakes.' in the past, he has never made mistakes of this altitude, therefore he was 'under prepared' because he simply did not know what they outcome would be.)

General Comment:i think this song is about someone who lost their significant other because of drugs.
The chorus is refering to what their significant other is going through, "How long must you wait for it"

General Comment:I think he loved someone and he let them go because he was 'scared tired and under prepared' and now shes chasing another person and all he wants is for her to turn around and take him back. All his trying to say is 'in my place' i can not change her feelings but 'please, please come back and sing to me'

General Comment:Chris Martin is a big fan of Ian McCulloch, lead singer and founder of the Liverpool band Echo And The Bunnymen. Martin wore McCulloch's coat when he recorded this. This song seems to be about a guy who loves a girl who doesn't reciprocate. He is telling her that he will always wait for her, but he doesn't think that she should stay where she is any longer.

General Comment:i think this song is about a friend talking for another friend who died. for example Ryan Dunn, Jackass star who died in a car crash. "crossed lines i shouldnt have crossed" (drink and drive). "how long must you wait/pay for it" (how long he has to wait/pay for his mistake). (i was scared, tired and underprepared" (how not ready the guy was when his friend past). "if you go, if you go and leave me down here on my own. then ill wait for you" (talking about how he'll meet up with his friend again). "singing please please please come back and sing for me" (how he wished their friend was still here and would come back to sing for them one last time). i think we all have someone we wish would come back and sing for us. it's deeper than just a relationship.
