This song is how people are oppressed and can't speak freely. It also connotates that a vision came to simon in a dream....

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.

In restless dreams I walk alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
'Neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence.

"Fools" said I,"You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the signs said, 'The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls.
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence.

My Interpretation:I'd agree that the song is about problems in communication and uses contrast between darkness and light to show how apathy to exchange thoughts on serious matters cause people to sink in constant humming of trivial information (sound of silence) - what has already been said. All that is kept in oneiric setting, so that the meaning is like meaning of a dream, far from obvious or even ambiguous.

What attracted mine attention is ending of the song, in fact an unsetting one. Though it is rather loose, a reference to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… can be heard there. In this way the song gains more meaning. It treates on how people tend to value convenience and grandeur of civilized development (neon lights, neon god) more than their company. Such hubris make communication difficult and a community in general weaker. It becomes in itself the source of downfall of what people used to praise. Like in the story, even after receiving warnings about this condition people omit them becuase of being too concentrated on insignificant matters. The song has an open ending - there is no judgement there - only an observation and suggestion of things to come:

"And the signs said, 'The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls.
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence"

General Comment:Simon might of been young, however he shows great understanding about the world around him. Some comment believes that Simon was incapable to write something that would have such a great depth to it because of his age. I come across people who were only 14 years old yet had more depth about life then a 60 years old man. It is not the age, it is what life offered to you which gives you depth, understanding and sympathy toward others. For example if you were bullied at school or had troubles at home, you are under racism, it will cause pain but at the same time it will give you greater understanding about the world. I suspect Simon might of been through some hard time which made him not only an artist but an enlightened person.

The meaning of the lyrics is about darkness, representing ignorance,
silence representing people are not allowed to express their opinion.
"people talking without speaking" meaning they just talk, without any meaning...
"people hearing without listening" people hearing but do not understand.
"When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of neon light" is advertising and advertising equals money. Therefore, he is talking about wealth.
"and people bowed and prayed, To the neon god they made" worshiping money and wealth, and wealth become the prophet even in the subway walls where advertising is shown.

Hello darkness my old friend.. we are living in a shallow world in darkness, enslaved by wealth.

My Interpretation:The song deals with moments of enlightment, the power and change it can bring if they are pursued being shadowed by the unfortunate reality that they will not be shared by others in turn rendering the moment to a passing thought . I think we all have moments like these, moments of perceiving things differently than you did before, the sense that your idea can not be self-contained. But what happens? More often than not, is that people do not care truely listen or understand your view. They will more likely engage the idea momentarily and return to what they previously chose to believe. Eventually, we may diminish the idea ourselves, "The sound of silence" is a comfort zone, a metaphyical space where creative ideas or even solutions are combatant with a resilency to change. The end of the song suggest that these meaningful concepts are everywhere, overlooked places (suway walls/tennament halls) you will just have keep an open mind and not let the opprotunities for greatness crumble to the fear of thier rebuttles. So of all the verse to interpret I think the first is the most important. The narrator says, I had an enlightment, it came on to me in the night. I sense this was of great importance great. The remaining lyrics are used to degrade the idea with preconceived notion of it's failure. And there it sits, never to be shared.

My Interpretation:I'm a 17 y.o french so , forgive me about my poor english.

I think this words , are depicting the idea of a man who's having a hard time , like if he were slowly sinking into deep water of depresion, he's wondering about the aim of life.

The first stanza would mean the man is starting to ask himself because he's having a tough time , he's having a a "vision" of the aim of life.

In the second stanza , he's just explaining how he found it out , by using the metaphorical device of his wandering in the street, as if first he didn't figure out the solution , but he was attracted by a light , a light which showed him the truth.

In the third Stanza , the word "naked" would mean pure. Therefore into this pure light , he'd seen bad habbits of people , "People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening" The word is rotten by the carelessness of people for each other and there's no rise of new ideas , of strong thoughts as in the past.

The fourth stanza would be the man advice that he want to tell the word , but no one want to listen him and people are still submiting themself to the "sound of silence"

The fifth stanza would mean that religion is the worst thing ever as Voltaire said " Ce n'est pas Dieu qui a créé l'homme, mais l'homme qui a créé Dieu." ( this ain't god who created humankind but humankind who created god). Religion would be the thing which make people being slave , slave of "the sound of silence".

To conclude , I personally think that "the sound of silence" is just a way to denounce the lack of culture which is compelling people , as of they were emprisonned into it. The man would understood it and wanted to help people to get out of this fog , but no one is listening , because this thing which make us being slave is stronger than the voice author.

The word " silence" is repeated 6 times , and mostly to the end of the stanza to show the powerlessness of the man in front of this "silence growing"
We can imagine that the man in the end of the song will keep being alone until someone also find the truth.

( My interpretation also including the rythm of this music , wich is slow sad , and it's going crescendo to show that the man want to be heard by people under the fog. It's sad because the man is lonely , his only friend is the darkness and that's why he want to help people , otherwise he will be alone for the rest of his life. The song moral philosphy would be " Human being can't be alone" and "When we are the only one who saw the truth that people cannot understand , we're the loneliest person more than ever.)

    -sorry for my english-

General Comment:I believe this song is about being alone and depressed. The singer is viewing the rest of the world and noticing how people will mindlessly go along with it, incapable of making their own decisions. This is reflected in the third stanza, “People talking without speaking. People hearing without listening”. The action is then reflected as the ‘Sound of Silence’.

General Comment:This song is one of the most creative songs ever written.....

I like in the end when it says 'The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls'
It makes me think of how the true heart of this country and world can be found in the working class and impoverished neighborhoods. Many people look at the celebrities on TV for inspiration, but true knowledge and wisbom comes from those who need to fight everyday for survival.

General Comment:The song is criticising the tendency of acting without sanity and to not speak up against this situation.
"When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence"- Here where we're situated surrounded by darkness, silence, interrupted by a flash of "light", and I emphasize this because in the next stanza the this "light" is referred to as the common culture doing nothing -"People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening"- and that no one dares to change it.
In the last stanza , the reference to religious figures is used as a metaphor, saying that the people embrace that tendency that they created.

General Comment:People say that music is a poem with a melodic background. That is what this song is, that is what gives this song its beauty. The beauty about music like this, is that each individual is given the opportunity to develope their own meaning to a song, allowing them to become emotionally attached on a personal level, and giving it their own person meaning. I love reading other peoples creativity. To me, this song is about neglect. About all the things wrong in this world, that everyday people, like myself choose to ignore. Maybe not ignore, but feel to insignificant to make a difference. Instead we choose to stay in the sound of the silence. People are trying to get us all to help, people who have already overcome the feeling of insignificance and are helping. 'ignoring' things like world hunger, sex trafficing. I dont want to get to deep, im only young, and im not a music journalist, but that is my personal meaning. This song, actually makes me want more out of life, it scares me that we stay in the sound of the silence. Whatever youre view of the "silence" is, i want to overcome it.

Song Meaning:I think that this song is about a struggle to share and exchange MEANINGFUL ideas. The people “talking without speaking” and “hearing without listening” are too afraid to share their deep and personal ideas or consider the ideas of others. A person’s refusal to share or receive meaningful ideas dissuades others from sharing meaningful ideas, which leaves people isolated in a personal bubble of silence. When people are too afraid to open up and disturb their comfortable bubble of silence, all that is left for everyone to see is the neon light – the glaringly obvious and superficial. As for the ending, I think it is an anthropomorphized neon sign warning the silent people that “the words of the prophets”, or ideas that used to be incredibly meaningful, are “written on the subway walls and tenement halls” – are now written in crappy public places alongside posters, dirt, and graffiti. The meaning has been lost. The words and ideas they conveyed are now no more important than any other carelessly scribbled message. And yet, and yet. These important words are also “whispered in the sounds of silence”. I personally like to think this means that, though much of what we blather on about today in school, in the media, with our friends, ect... is not very meaningful, we DO still reach out to one another; people ARE still capable of sharing great ideas (as is required of great philosophers and inventors and builders) even if only in whispers. And perhaps one day, when someone has an idea which is very important to them, they will not feel too intimidated to open up and share that idea or have that idea challenged by someone else’s idea.
