I bought my angel on the 4th of July
I didn't plan it, it just happened that way
I guess faith stepped in the end
'Cause I needed you then

When I bought him they said "Are you sure?
No refunds, returns, or exchanges because once He's yours he's yours for good."
Now you behave like an angel should

'Cause I saw it on TV
They were selling pieces of heaven
And I thought, "Hey what about me?
What am I considered?"

I chained my angel to eaves trough
It was November and I think I pissed him off
He's mad but I don't care
You're my angel so there

I figure its only about 60 more years
So come on angel, stop all the tears
Come sing me a song or two
Or whatever it is you angels do

'Cause I saw it on TV
They were selling pieces of heaven
And I thought, hey what about me
When can I make reservations

My pet angel's got a long lost friend
Who says he's coming back when the world ends
When us humans have lost our touch
God never liked people that much

'Cause he saw it on TV
They were selling pieces of heaven
And he thought, "Well how can this be
What in the Hell are they thinking?"

General Comment:i have a theory but its hard to put into words

my interepretation is that she made a sattire, she took her salvation and turned it into something physical and tangible... because of all things religion and spirituality is far from physical.

i think the peice of heaven represents a spot in heaven for your salvation, kind of like am i on the list or how do i get on it??

i think the words have a powerful meaning pointing out how humans are really selfish: "i thought what about me?" and "god never liekd people that much"
and how she treats the angel really poorly, tieing him up and telling him to get over it and sing her a song.. we treat others in general badly for selfish reasons and have no mercy or sympathy.

i think theres more about religion too but i cant put my finger on it..

General Comment:I think the idea behind this song is that spirituality can be bought. They sell salvation on tv. completely self-involved and selfish, they "mistreat" the path to salvation (i.e. helping other people, ignoring other people's needs), because they think that just having this store-bought form of salvation is enough.

    i really love this song.

General Comment:I think that the "pieces of heaven" actually refers to the "angel" she bought. i think what they were selling on tv was actually this whole idea that to fit in in society, you have to have certain things...

"And I saw it on tv
They were selling pieces of heaven
And I thought, hey what about me?
    When am I considered?"
which by the way should read, "cause i saw it on tv"

i think this song is about doing something for the wrong reasons. To me, personally, it's about dating someone not because you have feelings for them but some other (for example, to be cool or fit in).

"I chained my angel to the eavestrough
It was November and I think I pissed him off "
I think this means that she actually had no use for her "angel" so she left him outside because she doesnt know what she's supposed to do with him, hence the part: "Come and sing me a song or two, Whatever it is you angels do "; she only bought him because everyone else was doing the same thing, so she doesnt know what his purpose is.

I can relate to this song because i almost dated a guy who had like a "bad boy image" just to piss my parents off. But when we were alone, I couldn't deal because we had so little in common. This song just shows how shallow even good people can be.

    take care,

General Comment:I think this is satirical again, like sweet ones.

Note the angel was on tv, references to the fourth of july.

    Im thinking manufactured patriotic capitalism.

General Comment:er. there's also a part missing. After what is up there, it goes :
'Cause I saw it on TV
They were selling pieces of heaven
And I thought, Hey what about me?
When can I make reservations.. ooh

My pet angel's got a long lost friend.
He says he's coming back when the world ends
when us humans have lost our touch...
God never liked people that much

'Cause he saw it on TV
they were selling pieces of heaven
and he thought, Well, how can this be?
What in Hell are they thinking?
