Lyrics for Northern Sky as interpreted by karnasaur

Northern Sky Lyrics
I never felt magic crazy as this. I never saw moons, knew the meaning of the sea.
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree
but now you're here, brighten my northern sky.

Been a long time that I'm waiting, been a long that I'm blown.
Been a long time that I've wandered through the people I have known.
Oh, if you would and you could straighten my new mind's eye.

Would you love me for my money? Would you love me for my head?
Would you love me through the winter? Would you love me till I'm dead?
Oh, if you would and you could come blow your horn on high.

I never felt magic crazy as this, I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea.
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree.
But now you're here, brighten my northern sky.

Nick Drake's lyrics have been a constant amazement to me as I listen to his work, in his all too short life he released only three studio albums, all of which classics filled with beautiul poetic lyrics. This song is no exception, it is filled with his love for someone that has filled his mind with new feelings and emotions and he feels on top of the world.

does anyone notice a striking resemblance in the sound of belle & sebastian to that of nick drake? i just watched the movie "serendipity" and this song (northern sky) was in it and i had to watch the credits to see if it was nick drake or belle & sebastian that were singing. it's just very similar, almost to the point that it sounds as if b & s melded themselves after drake. just a thought...

a lot of people think b&s sound like nick. i think that is mostly due to stuart murdoch's (of b&s) voice.

I'm not sure if this song was meant to be romantic. I wouldn't know, though. It is, indeed, a beautiful song.

Nick Drake had a great deal of influence on Belle and Sebastian's music (so they say in interviews)

I think this is perhaps one of the few "love songs" I like, because rather than stating how what he'd like to do to her, how beautiful she is, etc., it shows the new apriciation of life that can come with love. I also the insecurity, or uncertainty of love the third verse points at.

It's about someone who brings light into your life whenever you see them- "brighten my northern sky" meaning there is light where there would normally be darkness. However, this could also be interpreted in a bad way, meaning this person reveals parts of your mind you would rather leave hidden.

In reference to the "brighten my northern sky" line, I ran across a quote in a magazine once from a Josh Ritter song that went something like "all of the other girls here are stars, you are the Northern Lights" and everytime I've heard this song after that, it's what I thought Nick Drake was saying except 25 years earlier

This song was the first time I heard a Nick Drake song, and it pulled at the strings of my heart and from that moment I was smitten. To the extent that on my own hand made wedding invites I added the lyrics to the first verse on them.

Reason behind it was I trying to explain basically what was said here by Smithskid84, was htat I didn't realy notice and appreciate anything and life's delecacies till my now husband showed me.

Such hope from a restless soul. Hope you found peace Nick.

This really is one of the most beautiful songs ever made. anakin821, I know what Josh Ritter song you're referring too, and I have to agree that something along the lines of "all of the other girls are stars, you are the Northern Lights" is what Nick Drake was trying to convey in this song. At least, that's how I see it.
"I never held emotion in the palm of my hand or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree
but now you're here, brighten my northern sky"
Such a beautiful thing to say, of all Nick Drakes songs, this is my favourite.

I think its beautiful in a somehow tragic way, but i can't put my finger on just why it is tragic, i mean, that third verse is just amazingly beautiful, and somehow very sad.

I can't believe no one recognized the beauty of Nick Drake's work during his time--or at least that he didn't gain a popular following so that he could at least continue to make music. I also can't believe that no one saved him from his loneliness. There's an immense sense of humility in this song and an innocent sincerity about it.

I basically hear a plea for friendship in this so that he could actually have a reason to feel hopeful and happy about life even if his musical career wasn't enough to support him. I dunno. His voice sounds so frail and sort of desperate for an escape.

Yeah, I think the person earlier was referring to "Is It Wicked Not To Care?":

But if there was a sequel
Would you love me as an equal?
Would you love me until I'm dead?

or a song from Boy with the Arab Strap. I think some songs on that album have a Nick Drake influence.

you spend time searching for someoen... then finding that special someone and realizing that you've never felt these emtions till you met them. every person needs a soul mate... or atleast someone who can open things up for them

So, so beautiful.
Its just about blissfully happy love, and being thankful for that person that makes you genuinely happy and makes you experiences emotions and feelings that you've never quite experienced before.

Amazing, i'd quite like to fall in love to this please :]

Anyone who's ever seen a Northern English overcast sky knows what he's on about. I think this needn't be overcomplicated. I think it's about him trying to escape monotony and melancholy in Northern life.
