It is complete now
Two ends of time are neatly tied
A one-way street
She's walking to the end of the line
And there she meets
The faces she keeps
In her heart and mind
They say
"Goodbye"
Tomorrow Wendy you're going to die
Underneath the chilly grey November sky
We can make believe that Kennedy is still alive
We're shooting for the moon
And smiling Jackie's driving by
They say
"Good try"
Tomorrow Wendy is going to die
I told the priest
Don't count on any second coming
God got his ass kicked
The first time he came down here slumming
He had the balls to come
The gall to die
And then forgive us
No I don't wonder why,
I wonder what he thought it would get us
Hey hey
Goodbye
Tomorrow Wendy is going to cry
Only God says "jump"
So I say "in good time"
Cause if he ever saw it
It was through these eyes of mine
And if he ever suffered
It was me who did his crying
Hey hey
Goodbye
Tomorrow Wendy's going to die

General Comment:Wendy is critically ill and she commits suicide "tomorrow". Seems pretty cut and dried to me, but it's always interesting to read some of the outlandish interpretations on here.

General Comment:I just want to say this is one of the most moving songs I have every listened to. I used to listed to this song over and over when my grand father was sick and I was only 14 and cried so much yet it was such a good song. I never knew the "meaning" or reason it was written until this evening. I am going through what Wendy went through living day to day hoping I make it through many more years until I can't anymore.

General Comment:Whether the writer of this awesome song is an atheist or not, I do not know, but surely you can write about God in a poetic sense without being a believer. It's about expressing yourself. I'm sure George Lucas doesn't actually believe in Jedis and wookies. ^^

However, I definately find a touch of atheism or at least skepticism towards religion in this song.

General Comment:gordtaylor -To me, the lyric ( not necessary the writer) is written from Aethist’s point of view. I think it’s obvious. That doesn’t mean Johnette Napolitano is Aethist, although I think it’s likely that she is because she also wrote the song called “God is a bullet”

Just because she references the things in Bible doesn’t she believes in it. The song clearly expresses the anger toward God.

Song Meaning:You know, you guys are in a music forum arguing over the song being about a prostitute with AIDS. That is who the song was written for, but it is music. that doesnt mean that it is the songs only meaning. Everyone looks at the world differently. Music relates to each of us in a different way. This song may have many meaning. I personally love the song and in my life experiences, I have buried two children and a husband, in three different years, before the age of thirty. I see the meaning everyone else sees, and the view points. When I first listened to this song though, I felt that to me it meant that we will all die,, and wendy was going to die regardless. We have no control over the fact that death is inevitable. It is not about athiesm in my opinion. It is a person stating a fact in a manner more bluntly than most have the balls to do. People need to state their interpretations about the music and how they feel but dont bash on someone elses interpretation. A musician shares their music so others can have it impact the lives of others. So it doesnt matter how it is seen as long as it touched people.

Song Meaning:I don't see where in the lyrics that it says the writer\singer is an atheist. In fact I think they do believe in God, they are just angry with God, because their friend Wendy is dying.

To clarify the part about God getting his ass kicked: "I told the priest, Don't count on any second coming. God got his ass kicked, the first time he came down here slumming. He had the balls to come, the gall to die, and then forgive us".

This is a reference to the first and second coming of Jesus Christ. The first coming was when Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary. Jesus was God in the flesh on earth and humans beat him and eventually killed him through crucifixion. So yes, He got his ass kicked, literally. The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (the first coming) is the ultimate sacrifice for our sins thus giving us forgiveness. During the second coming of Christ some believe that God will take his believers up to heaven so they are safe from Armageddon and the end of the world as we know it. In this song they writer\singer is telling the priest that the second coming won't save Wendy. This may be because Wendy has decided to commit suicide and determine when she will die.

What a powerful song. I like it a lot. While I personally wonder why God can allow things like Wendy’s death to happen, it does not stop me from proclaiming him as Lord. Praise God and I hope both Wendy and the singer\writer find piece with Him. :)

General Comment:Well, I think it's possible to be an atheist and still be mad at the idea of a God in music. You can't do that kind of thing when you are writing serious essays but in art you can, I think you can.

You can still talk about the concept of God but still not believe in it.

In this case, the narrator is angry at the society that believes in God and the idea of God. That doesn't necessary mean the narrator believes in God.

Either way, it's a good song.

General Comment:This song is an "album-ender", right up there with Siouxsie & The Banshees' "Rhapsody", Joy Division's "Decades", and Mazzy Star's "Look on Down From the Bridge". A truly plaintive song.
