Lyrics for Lemmings as interpreted by oofus

Lemmings Lyrics
A freight train to the right, feeling that sting of pride
It's fucking with me, it's fucking with you
All's fair in love and war until you say it isn't but you're wrong

Words on the back of flyers, my clothes are in the dryer
It means nothing, nothing is changing
La familia is dead and gone, the children grew up and moved on

Is it too much to ask for the things to work out this time?
I'm only asking for what is mine
I wanted everything, I got it and now I'm gonna
Throw it away, I'll throw it away (yeah)

Prime select and a box of glazed, pulling fly-bys on days
When we were young and innocent
Elbow-drop Sundays when Mark Eaton got beat to shit

Laughing at the bands we hate, all the spots we used to skate
They're still there, but we've gone our own ways
I know it's for the best but sometimes I wonder
Will I ever have friends like you again?

Is it too much to ask for the things to work out this time?
I'm only asking for what is mine
I wanted everything, I got it and now I'm gonna
Throw it away, I'll throw it away (yeah)

Is it too much to ask for the things to work out this time?
I'm only asking for what is mine
I wanted everything, I got it and now I'm gonna
Throw it away, I'll throw it away (yeah)

You're gonna drown in the mess you make
Your self-inflicted hate
You turn your back on the friends you lose
When they don't follow all your rules

But people are what they wanna be
They're not lemmings to the sea
Maybe it's time you looked at yourself
And stop blaming life on someone else

I read on a site what Mark said this song was about. Ot was about a friend he had, who expected everyone to be "lemmings". Lemmings are animals who follow each other and jump into the sea to their deaths. I did some research on why a little while back, but it says nobody knows for sure why. Anyway, his friend expected everyone to follow him and do what he does. Hence the line "People are what they want to be, they're not lemmings to the sea." That's what it said at cb182.com. I love this song. It's my fav. song from Blink ever.

After Dude Ranch they became poster boys for Mtv's moronic little 13 year old girls who want to "rebel'. Thats a run on sentence...Oh yeah Dude Ranch is the best one lately...

God, this song is so effing great! I love Blink 182. I just started listening to all their CD's again. Dude Ranch has always been their best in my mind. This song is espically close to me. 'All the spots we used to skate. They're still there, but we've gone our own ways. ' Pretty much explains me and my old friends. And yeah, I have had friends who blamed people for their problems, and they need to change. This song and CD is so amazing. Anyone who doesn't own this CD is missing out on the REAl Blink.

probably my favorite song off of blink's best album. the last two verses sort became my anthem when a couple of my friends went crazy on me. i love it how, especially on DUDE RANCH, blink always seems to capture exactly what i'm feeling in certain situations. that's why they're my favorite band and always will be whether or not people think they've "sold out." when you get down to it, their music is just plain AWESOME and it really connects with me. it doesn't change a thing if people vote for them on TRL or whatever.

aww it is almost enough to make ya cry. its about growing up and moving on.
Is it too much to ask for the things to work out this time?
I'm only asking for what is mine
this part kinda makes you think how nothing ever seems to go right

This is my favorite Blink-song. Its written so universally to me. No matter how I feel or what I'm going though, this song always give me something I cant find most places. I think it might be strength, not sure though. I think the basic meaning is that you should live life how you want, dont live it for someone else or blame someone else for it. You can change it if you really want to. This song keeps Blink on my personal fave bands list.

this song is something that everyone can relate to. We all know what it's like to have your friends and your hangouts be the most important thing in life and then one day you wake up and realize that you're fighting with all your friends and your pride wont let you back down, and that you've gotta go your own way from the people you still can rely on or you'll be a "lemming to the sea" and have no real life of your own.

"laughing at the bands we hate
all spots we used to skate
well, they're still there
but we've gone our own ways
I know it's for the best but sometimes I wonder
will I ever have friends like you again?"

that's engraved in my soul. this is my fave Blink song by far.

I love this song! It's one that I like to put on and sing, cause it's so fast, and the lyrics are classic. Dude Ranch was probably their best album, although I am a big fan of Cheshire Cat too... Bhudda, however... I paid 28 bucks (Canadian) for it, and it hasn't been worth it, except to make fun of. But, back on topic, this song, and Dude Ranch, are both amazing, and I'm glad I invested the 15 dollars to go buy this cd! I'd like to see these guys go back to their punk roots, I think it'd be so awesome! I like Box Car Racer's album better than either of the two newer Blink albums, just cause it sounds better~

I always took this song as being about Mark saying goodbye to the SoCal punk scene he'd grown up around and how it was really good to him, but he had different plans than to stay punk-rock forever.

"Words on the back of flyers [for shows], my clothes are in the dryer [touring]
It means nothing, nothing is changing
La familia is dead and gone [punk is dead and gone], the children grew up and moved on [I think Mark feels it's time to grow and move on from the skater punk kid from San Diego he'd always been used to]"

"Is it too much to ask for the things to work out this time?
I'm only asking for what is mine [staying punk wasn't for him]
I wanted everything [always wanting to be in a band and having everyone in the skate and punk scenes to know who you are], I got it and now I'm gonna
Throw it away, I'll throw it away (yeah) [that's what happened but now he wants to move on]"

"Laughing at the bands we hate [in the scene], all the spots we used to skate
They're still there, but we've gone our own ways
I know it's for the best but sometimes I wonder
Will I ever have friends like you again? [looking back on the bittersweet memories of being a skate punk and even though he knows it's personally for the best, he was apart of something that he knows isn't like anything else. Maybe he's thinking about bands they used to tour with - NOFX, Pennywise - whom wanted to stay true to their roots and Mark respects that but that lifestyle just isn't for him.]"

"You're gonna drown in the mess you make
Your self-inflicted hate
You turn your back on the friends you lose
When they don't follow all your rules [the punk scene saying this to Mark, and all the rules are the "punk rock rules" which are more like unwritten laws (yes, that was a pun, if you didn't catch that)]

But people are what they wanna be
They're not lemmings to the sea
Maybe it's time you looked at yourself
And stop blaming life on someone else [and Mark says this to the punk scene. I think he's saying goodbye.]"

Call me crazy but the last two songs on Dude Ranch are "Lemmings" and "I'm Sorry", the first sung by Mark and the latter by Tom, but I think Lemmings is Mark's goodbye to the punk scene and I'm Sorry is Tom's goodbye. You all probably think I'm looking WAY too far into this, and you know what? I probably am.

sacrifice for life - I like it, good insights there. I'd never thought of that angle before, I don't know if that's what they intended, but now it definitely seems possible. Mad props to you.

This is a brilliant song by the way, just sweet.

everyone read what sacrifice for life wrote, its not just a cosidence that those 2 songs are that the end its perfect and its actually kinda creep cuz blink arnt known for metaphorical soft meaninful songs. we all know that after dude ranch blink 182 (and i quote)'sold out' but the way that sacrifice for life explained this song kind of makes me not care that they sold out cuz they knew what they were doing and it was just time 2 say fare well

i love the song and i think it is awesome. but i want to point out that lemmings do not actually jump off of cliffs and committ suicide because they are following each other...that is a myth that was popularized by some movie. nevertheless people think it is the truth and it makes a great symbol for the song. just wanted to clear it up.

best song ever, not just blink but of all time. the lyrics remind me of me and my friends, who have all split up and gone to seperate colleges, and the line 'I know it's for the best but sometimes I wonder
Will I ever have friends like you again?' always hits home!!! this is a song about saying goodbye to your childhood, which is something everyone has to go through.
I love blink cos everyone of their songs has a meaning that I can relate to, and im sure everyone feels the same
