This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. i find myself feeling like nothing quite often. sad, but it's nice to find songs that relate to me in some way...gives me relief somehow. =P
the "she smiled and looked at me, and said..." really gives the chorus that much more punch, because it's true. you feel like nothing to someone, yet all you can do is smile and pretend it's no big deal.
I think this song is about a guy who uses women and tricks them into falling in love with him, but he feels nothing towards them. Then it talks about the women's perspective telling him he doesn't know what it's like from her end (which he doesn't because he can't feel anything emotionally, and this makes her feel like nothing to him). At the end, he is saying he feels like nothing, and appears to on some level not like what he is, but can't change.

The only thing i could possibly add to that is I believe the lyrics could also symbolize a bitter relationship torn apart by addictions, whether it was drugs, infidelity, etc. I get the impression from the song that he originally was interested in her and wanted to help, but her issues caused him to lose respect for her in the end; the message I get is "Told you so." I think this song is about rape. The girl in the song was raped previously and can't have a relationship because of this, and because it's such a terrible thing and no one could really understand, she tells him "you don't know what it's like". When you're raped you feel alone and insignificant and like nothing, so that's what I think it's about.
one of the best by ec. btw, the version on brand new history was re-edited and it sounds smoother but not as rock as the original. the original is better if you're a fan of hard rock, and it's on the much big shiny tunes 4. anyway, i love this song. you can't really dance to it or anything.. i tried singing to it but trevor's voice is too low or too high for me.. I think this song is about the singer not knowing what rejection is like and is the main reason he does it. The verses seem to be mocking the rejected. And the girl is telling him he doesn't know what it's like in the chorus. Tight song.
