The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Turn out the light
Just say goodnight to yourself
May I remind you
When you find you
Are all alone, It's when you
You've got to be strong
That's when they call you, in the night
He's got your picture in his mind
He's got your number on a paper
At his disposal, anytime
Is it really true?
Could you save yourself
For someone who
Could love you for you
So many times we just give it away
To someone who
To someone who
You met in a bar
The back of a car
And for a moment, you felt important
But not in your heart
Cause my self esteem
It's been low
Go ahead and count
It's been lower than low
I know the feeling
Of it stealing
life out from under me
'Cause I wanna learn
Could you save yourself
For someone who
Love you for you
So many times
We just give it away
To someone who
Couldn't even remember your name
Could you save yourself
For someone who
Loves you for you
Loves me for me
Just give it away
To someone who
To someone who
Would cherish your name
'Cause I wanna learn
Could you save yourself
For someone who
Could loves you for you
Loves me for me
Just give it away
To someone who
To someone who
Would cherish your name
Would cherish your name
Just say goodnight to yourself
May I remind you
When you find you
Are all alone, It's when you

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
this song has a lot of meaning for me. its basically saying that you need to wait to lose your virginity because you need to "save yourself" for someone who truly cares about you rather than someone who just wants a hookup.
when it talks about feeling important for a short time but really not and then having low self esteem, its true. you realize that youve just been a hook up and its meant nothing to that other person.
its never a good feeling.
basically, wait.
i really like this song too. i'm pretty sure its about sex.
Yeah, this song is about giving your virginity up to someone who really means something or wasting it. It's a great song.
i love this song...good stuff
this song shows how the youth today dont really realize that loseing your virginity can have meaning, and that you need to respect yourself enough to love the person and know they love you, because it sucks when you randomly lose it to some person who never calls you back or doesnt know your last name. Trust me i know, i lost mine on a motel 6 room floor with some skinhead i'd just met an hour ealier, and i really wish i waited.
i can't stop listening to this song! =) And, I think it is important for people to wait to have sex. I'm waiting until I find that special person who loves me for me.
Hmm... I agree with suburbansecrets. Although I still haven't lost my virginity yet, I feel that I need to wait for that one... I just wish she'll come already, I'm 19! Ugh. :)
i agree that its about how so many people give themselves to people who they dont even know at all, and how it really affects us after its all over, and we realize our mistake. what do we even take away from these kinds of 'relationships'? all they are really based on usually are just a few hours of good feelings maybe, that mostly cause hurt to the people involved later. it sucks that so many of us let ourselves do it. i'm waiting, and its hard sometimes, but i know itll be worth it.
yea, everyone here just about summed it up... i can realate to everything in this song. i feel you have to be somewhat mature to fully apreciate it. (best line: "..give it away To someone who, To someone who would cherish your name...") very beautiful...
I just heard this song on Leno and i immediately downloaded it. What a great song esp. after i read the lyrics. Yea i must say your virginity is supposed to be sacred and i like many others wish they would have heard this song before my first time which was one of the worst mistakes of my life
