[Chorus:]
Don't ya want to rain dance with me
Don't ya want to rain dance with me
Don't ya want to rain dance with me
Don't ya want to rain dance with me

Fifi said to Don the baker
"Can ya show me how to bake another bun, Don"
And I'm still sittin' with my next door neighbor
Sayin', "Where'd ya get the gun, John"

[Chorus]

Christopher was asking the astronomer
"Can your telescope tell me where the sun's gone"
And I'm still sittin' with my next door neighbor
Sayin', "Where'd ya get the gun, John"

[Chorus]

Changin' just a few things
Laughin' while the bell rings on the door
Changin' just a few things
Shootin' when the bird sings

Changin' just a few things
Laughin' while the bell rings on the door
Changin' just a few things
Shootin' when the bird sings

[Chorus x2]

General Comment:I have always loved this song but the line "Where'd ya get the gun" always made me think. I also think of this Canadian group singing about "American Woman" getting away from him. An obvious diss of the United States with its glitz, glam, ghetto scenes & war machines, of course. The hint of gun violence in this song makes me wonder if this is a diss of our gun culture as well. Remember....this song is from the hippy-dippy peace/love/dove era. Things and thoughts of the youth was different then. Then again, it could be just nonsense. But this group never seemed like the nonsense type. Just thinking....

My Interpretation:I think this song is about doing whatever you feel like doing, regardless of whether or not it is perceived as something that is productive or benefits society. I think the key lyric is "changing just a few things, laughing while the bell rings on the door" While other people are pursuing their interests (in baking and astronomy...both valued skills in society) these two regular guys (the narrator and "John") are doing what interests them (i.e. shooting birds outside, probably smoking some pot and having a few beers and just having a good time) I think John is supposed to be the one asking the narrator "Don't you wanna rain dance with me?" As in, don't you wanna go out and get high in the park and have a laugh?...I'll bring the gun

General Comment:I probably read into this song but I always liked it... I figured Fifi was an insignificant character but he was learning a useful craft; baking buns, while John sat around talking about guns. Sitting around talking about guns could be considered a useless pursuit, and some may consider guns potentially harmful. Christopher (Columbus) asked the astronomer if he could see beyond the visible sea to where the sun has gone; to what was he about to sail into? Two people, Fifi and Christopher, doing/learning something useful, both in a big way and a small way, while John the rain dancer, is doing something useless.

General Comment:To me this song is about a changing world. One that is getting much more dark and scary. I think Fifi and Don are having an afair,John is contemplating suicide or homicide (as above) christopher turns to the astronamer for guidence. He wants to know where the "sun" has gone meaning he wants to know when the world went sour and how to get it back.

General Comment:I think this song has to do with a neighbor who plans to commit a sucide or homicide. The other parts of it about the baker and the astronomer are stuff that is happening in other people's lives to serve as a comparison. Whatever it means, it is such a fantastic song!!
