Dr Worm Lyrics
They call me Dr. Worm
Good morning. How are you? I'm Dr. Worm I'm interested in things I'm not a real doctor But I am a real worm I am an actual worm I live like a worm I like to play the drums I think I'm getting good But I can handle criticism I'll show you what I know And you can tell me if you think I'm getting better on the drums I'll leave the front un-locked 'cause I can't Hear the doorbell When I get into it I can't tell if you are Watching me twirling the stick When I give the signal, my friend Rabbi Vole will pay the solo Some day somebody else besides me will Call me by my stage name, they will Call me Dr Worm Good Morning how are you, I'm Dr Worm I'm interested in things I'm not a real doctor But I am a real worm I am an actual worm I live like a worm I like to play the drums I think I'm getting good But I can handle criticism I'll show you what I know And you can tell me if you think I'm getting better on the drums I'm not a real doctor But they call me Dr. Worm

That's the beauty of TMBG, they were on a lot of drugs and wrote some fairly crazy, but great tunes.
Although, after reading what some of you people have to say about them, I'm not sure who's the crazy ones.

The "I'm not a real doctor" line comes from a line of ads in the 70's. There was a TV actor who starred in some soap opera as a doctor who was hired to plug medicine. The commercial featured him sitting in a doctor's office with a white lab-coat on... however, there were scandals back in the early days of TV advertising because having a non-doctor in a white lab-coat pushing your product was seen by many as a form of deceptive fraud. Therefore, he opened the ad with the unintentionally hillarious line "I'm not a real doctor, but I play one on TV."

Of course, he can't hear the doorbell! Worms don't have ears. He can only "listen" via vibrations. So, he finds a way of communicating - by drum sound waves. But worms tend to shy away from loud vibrations - it's a natural defense, so his mode of communication tends to draw criticism from his fellow-worms.
I think this song might have more to do with evolution. He's pretending to be a healer -- his friend (the rat) is pretending to be a religious leader... these are both jobs that are admired, but regardless of his fantasy, he's still only a worm. Maybe, one day, he'll evolve, and people will realize that he's more than just his outward appearance -- one day, he wants people to ask him how he is, and to understand that he's got true feelings and interests.

But songs like "Drink!" demonstrate the dark side of drug abuse. I think it's clear that the Johns have used drugs, but I don't think it's the primary creative influence in their life. And I think they recognize the harm caused by drugs more than the benefits they offer.
As Fizzward notes, coffee seems to be their drug of choice at the moment. The documentary Gigantic showed repeated consumption of massive amounts of coffee.
In any case, the struggling musician interpretation makes the most sense to me. The drug explanation makes the least sense. And Sir Larrikin's theory is not at all a killjoy. Sometimes the literal explanation is the most offbeat of all. I have to admit that it never occurred to me to interpret Doctor Worm literally.

As the song says, Mengele would eventually be revealed to be a worm. "Rabbi Vole" playing a solo probably refers to one of Mengele's conscripted inmate-nurses, who were forced to assist in his evil experiments.
This song is part of the vast WWII-inspired song arc that runs through TMBG's music. I am surprised that CanteenDave is the only one who has recognized it.
