Lyrics for Beloved as interpreted by David Gahan

Beloved Lyrics
It's colder than before,
The seasons took all they had come for.
Now winter dances here.
It seems so fitting don't you think
To dress the ground in white and grey.

It's so quiet I can hear my thoughts touching every second that I spent waiting for you.
Circumstances afford me no second chance to tell you How much I've missed you.

My beloved do you know
When the warm wind comes again
Another year will start to pass?
Please don't ask me why I´m here.
Something deeper brought me than a need to remember.

We were once young and blessed with wings.
No heights could keep us from their reach
No sacred place we did not soar.
Still greater things burned within us.
I don't regret the choices that I made.
I know you feel the same.

My beloved do you know
How many times I stared at clouds
Thinking that I saw you there?
These are feelings that do not pass so easily.
I can't forget what we claimed as ours.

Moments lost though time remains.
I am still proud of what we were.
No pain remains, no feeling.
Eternity awaits.
Grant me wings that I might fly.
My restless soul is longing.
No pain remains, no feeling.
Eternity awaits.

they were soulmates...
she died, and he never got to say goodbye.
but their love extends beyond death.
their time spent together on earth was just a moment in their eternity together.
he knows he still has purpose to stay in this life..
so he waits for his time to come, when he can finally join her forever.

truely a beautiful song.

I was in the computer lab at school, and wrote a story to this tune played over and over (it had just come out). I cried the whole damn time, it was one of the best stories I ever wrote.

I didn't know the info about the gf who died, but I got the idea from most of his love songs that he did lose someone he cared for deeply.

i remember the first time i heard this song... the man i was in love with sent it to me, then broke up with me 2 weeks later.

in a way, for me this song symbolizes the pain love puts you through (It's colder than before,
The seasons took all they had come for.), but it's also so joyous to feel that eternity with the right person awaits you. i love this song.

i feel that this song ofcurse is about a death of one who was so dearly loved by a companion. Now theyre suffering greatly. They just cant stop thinking about the love they shared together, the experiences and jusut how years go by, and that one is waiting for theyre time to leave and b with the one they once loved again. Till then all they have is sweet memoires.
This song truly made me cry when i first heard it, cause love is something amazing and powerful, and to have the one you love most leave you is the most devistaing expereince ever. And it kills. nothing compares.

Many people have used death as the interperetation for Beloved. Perhaps that is true, but I find that it is open for personal interperetation. When I hear it, I think not of literal death, but of a figurative one. Letting go, separation, yet the participants in these actions still live, turning away from each other. I had to do this, and I discovered this song in the midsts of my agony. I had to close off feelings for a guy who still remains one of my best friends to this day.

"no pain remains, no feeling"
I shut off the pain, all the feelings, to let emptiness grow, so that the grounds would be fertile for friendship without a relationship-sort of attatchments. On my end, it worked, on his... not so well. ^.^

Last Sunday VNV played in Athens and it was awsome!! Dancing, singing, joking. Their '' secret weapon'' as they said, was that the one keyboardist was Greek! This song was the highlight, with Ronan singing it at the end a capella along with the crowd.. Joy was also perfect and of course Epicentre, although Ronan changed a bit and made it harder to follow.

"Beloved" is the first song I had ever heard by VNV Nation. It drew me in, blew my mind, and I've never been the same. I have had one experience with "Beloved" that has defined my interpretation, and I can never shake this image and my association of it with this song.

I used to live across the street from a large cemetery, so it came as no surprise to me that, one autumn morning, a funeral procession was taking place across the way. Something I had witnessed many times before. This particular funeral happened at the beginning of fall, and anyone who lives in the state of New Hampshire can attend that the loss of a loved one during autumn would be particularly depressing. However, I continued about my daily routine and paid it no mind.

Several days later, I got into my car and it just so happened that "Beloved" was the song playing when I started up. As I was pulling out, I noticed in the cemetery across the street, an old man, propped up in his wheelchair in front of the same grave that the procession was for earlier in the week. THIS SONG, coupled with the cold autumn morning, the dead trees, cloudy skies and blowing leaves, seeing the old man in his wheelchair sitting, staring down at the grave of his beloved wife sent a shiver up my spine. The man returned quite a few times to the grave site over the next several weeks to lay down fresh flowers and brush off the leaves. These two has probably been together for so many years, and now he finally had to say goodbye. Remembering days when they were younger, proud of what they were. It was very sad indeed, and to me, "Beloved" could have no other meaning.

I dedicate this song to both of them.

This song is "our song" and was played at our wedding. To us it is not sad, nor does it represent a loss. My (then) boyfriend had this cd in his player, and i woke up to this song the morning after we made love for the first time. "Please don't ask me why I´m here.

We live in Minnesota, were winter is a time that everything is cleansed in white. We are young in years, according to most standards, and yet the song represents our moments lost and time remaining.

Then there is the birth of our child, the pain, the feeling, the complete change in our life, we now must live for our daughter, not ourselves. I am so proud of what we were, lend me wings that i might fly. And our eterinty awaits.

Moments lost though time remains.
I am still proud of what we were.
No pain remains, no feeling.
Eternity awaits.

Allthough I'm probably going to do nothing but repeat what has already been said, but even without knowing that he has lost a girlfriend you can pretty much tell that's what it's reffering to.

"My beloved do you know
When the warm wind comes again
Another year will start to pass?
Please don't ask me why I´m here.
Something deeper brought me than a need to remember. "

That reffering to him still being there without her, and time passing.

"My restless soul is longing.
No pain remains, no feeling.
Eternity awaits."

That's pretty much self explanitory.

None the less, it's one of my favorite songs, hands down.

It seems to me he is thinking about his soulmate.. that fact that he has no more feelings for them but still refers to them as Beloved.. Like they were together before, and things didn't work out but he is still so proud of what they had when they had it. And he knows that they have eternity to love each other, so he will not regret ending things, and neither will his Beloved. I think he's also telling them that he still thinks about them, and always will even if feelings die away. It's a "goodbye for now" sort of thing.

This song has always seemed to me to be an amazing expression of deep love for someone who is your soulmate, if you will. Even if the circumstances of your lives don't afford you the chance to be together, or to have a true goodbye in this life, this doesn't mean the love between the two souls dies. They are bound for eternity. And it sounds to me like Ronan would have been writing for someone he knew deep inside to be his soulmate.

I agree very much with interface2x's comment... This song and Forsaken go together in my mind. At first when you lose someone, whether it be to death or whatever, you feel lost and devastated. The world has turned its back on you, and you need that person, but they aren't anywhere. But Beloved, it's just so sweet, and it's on such a higher level of understanding, because you've grown and you have accepted that you can't be with that person, but that your souls will be together forever, no matter what.

I'm going to take a different take on this song from everyone else, and say what it means to _me_. :-)

I just recently entered into an international relationship with a girl from the Ukraine. We've only emailed and talked on the phone-our first in person meeting will be this February in Kiev.

When I've told people about this relationship and the fact that our first meeting in Kiev will be in February, one of the things that people have said is, "It will be so cold there!" But then I listened to this song on my commute to work this morning, and heard the lines, "Now winter dances here/It seems so fitting don't you think/to dress the ground in white and grey" and it brought such a smile to my face. :-)

For me, the rest of the song just romanticizes our love and all the obstacles we confront to make this relationship work. The second verse reflects on all the time I've missed her before we can finally meet, and then the remainder of the song serves as a symbol of strength in unity and love. :-)

The lines "My beloved, do you know/when the warm wind comes again/another year will start to pass" is an admonition to not wait for fairer times, as the times will just pass you by and will be gone forever. The second part of that verse, "Please don't ask me why I'm here/Something deeper brought me that I need to remember"(yes, I misheard it, but I like my version better. ;-) ) reminds me of my own responsibility to generate the relationship.

Even though the next verse takes place in the past, for me it's less about remembering something that once was and can never be again, and more about remembering the past like, "Let's do that again, shall we?"

I know, this is completely different from everyone else's interpretation, but hey, I hope you enjoyed my version as much as I did. :-)

I just went to their show in Detroit last night and I have to say, besides Chrome, this song got the biggest response. It was their last song, and the crowd felt it so intensly, it was unbelievable.

I got introduced to VNV Nation by an old friend of mine, and although the friendship (and relationship) didn't last, my love for this band did. Although at first I only listened to their stuff because it all made me think of him, I've come to love them for myself. But this song will always make me think of him, and while it's sad, it feels good at the same time.

Well, I kind of agree with GothicBlade that this song is about an "angel" of sorts. What I'm about to say may sound very strange, but this song has a very personal and unique meaning to me.

I have never found my soulmate in this earthly realm because I believe he is still in the spirit world. I am a Psychic Clairvoyant and I channel spirit entities and "communicate" with spirits quite often. I believe that my soulmate is my spirit guide, whom I talk with on a regular basis. I feel his presence around me all the time and he is my "guardian angel", if you will. So, to me, this song is about being separated from your beloved by time and space, being in a different realm altogether.

It's about two spirits who were both once blessed with wings, soaring to great heights and exploring their spiritual realm together, lost in love and bliss with one another, until she made the choice to be born into the physical world to experience another reality, while he made the choice to stay behind in the spiritual realm and be her guardian/guide. They miss what they once had together in the spirit realm, but they don't regret the choices that they made because each did what was right for them. She longs to return: "Grant me wings that I might fly, my restless soul is longing." But they know that they will be together again someday when she passes back into the spirit world...eternity awaits.

That is my own personal take on the song, and I'm sure many people will think I'm crazy or delusional or whatever, but that is what the song means to me.

P.S. If you think about it, my take on the song is basically the same thing as loving someone who has died and is in the spirit world. So, I guess it's not that farfetched. :)

After interperting this song for almost an hour, I came to the conclusion that it is about him losing some one he loved. I believe it is meant to take place at the the grave, that is why he says "Please don't ask me why I´m here.
Something deeper brought me than a need to remember. " Typically when you go to a grave, you are there in rememberance of that person, but he was going their to talk to her.
I also think that he is also saying that he wants to join her, "No pain remains, no feeling. Eternity awaits."
