    My Opinion:This song is obviously about the concrete-encased japanese girl who was tortured, raped, and killed by 4 teenagers. The song is a tribute song thats telling the girl to hold on and to never give up.

    General Comment:I think this song is about becoming hard and indifferent in response to a broken world. In the song, the girl shows no emotions, and holds everything inside, just as if she were as solid as concrete. I think in encouraging her to laugh or cry, he's telling her that sometimes everyone needs to let their emotions show through. He doesn't want her to be numb and unfeeling, bottling everything up because then it will be even worse when she finally falls down and can't get back up. Because pretending to have nothing to run from can be even worse than just facing all your fears

    "'The Concrete Girl' was written about a dear friend of mine who stood upon the brink of a world of doubt exhausted and dejected. With doubts and fears swimming around in her head, she had learned to fake her smile and go on with life. One night we got to talking at the top of the concrete world [on the building roof] of UCSD. So we stood up there talking about our hopes and fears. And I prayed that she wouldn't stop thinking and that she wouldn't fall down. And she hasn't."

    General Comment:HAHAHA thats so funny, I wasn't looking at the dates till that last comment, and mine is going to be posted almost a year later!
    I never thought of it as a song about suicide...it brings a whole new aspect to the song. I always thought of it as a song about a girl Jon admires. I think its great that he wrote this song, its a really significant topic. Awesome.

    General Comment:Ummmm... Actually guys its an anti suicide song. Jon actually said so at a concert I was at a couple of years ago, and truthfully it probably makes the most sense. (Has anyone else noticed that at times what a group says their song is about doesn't always match with everything that is in the song. I mean for example there are songs that U2 has said to be about one thing and years later Bono has come back and said that actually although he really didn't notice it when he wrote it the song was subconsciously written about something else. [If you're wondering what song that is, its "Tomorrow" off of War]). So I thought you all might like that little piece of information as to what Jon says (or at least said) the song was about overall. Actually it makes your analysis more complete in the end.
