Lyrics for The Meadow as interpreted by *SoBeR~STiNKFiST*

The Meadow Lyrics
I don't ask why, I just fall into the meadow
I close my eyes , and wait to die
Yes, I am a liar
Yes, I am a sinner
Please forgive my broken soul
But I've got nowhere else to go
They made the world so hard
If I had somewhere else to go
Then I could be a star like you
Special like you
A star like you
Special like you
And all those picture frames surround you
I saw you in France
All those busters hang around you
I asked you to dance
I can't take you home tonight
No, I can't be your man
I know why you here tonight
You in a fight with your man
But I've got nowhere else to go

this song is about a man who just thinks he lost everything. i think that was a woman. special woman. they had only one night. and although it's not possible to meet again, the guy, deep inside his heart dreams and remembers.

i agree with warhead. i think the story is kinda that he met her in an art gallery too- the whole "picture frames surround you" bit, maybe the meadow is a painting that reminds him of her?

Hey I love this song because I feel a bit like this guy.

Like Warhed said, this guy thinks he lost everything, especially the woman he loves, ("you") which is probably in itself most of his life...

He should start a new way of life....(a.k.a American beauty movie)

when elephents are ready to die they travel to elephent grave yards which are usualy meadows in africa
its like what he's saying in this song is sometimes every thing is just far tomuch and he is ready to just laydown and die but if he had somewheres else to go he might be happy like every one else

I luv this song, I could listen to it non-stop and never get bored of it, but it really upsets me when you actually listen to the words 'coz it makes you think 'bout how this guy knows that he can never see or have the woman again and hes reflecting on the night they did have together

This is one of (hed)'s all-time greatest songs. It's about a guy down on his luck, he's just kinda drifting towards death cuz his girl left him, but yet he'll never die because he's felt this true pure love... It makes me sad and happy at the same time... just chills me to the bone...

u guys are close. i was told by kim, a personal friend of jahreds ( the lead singer of hed pe) that jahred had a friend who did an african painting about elephants and other spiritual meanings relating to african culture. she showed this painting to jahred and it inspired him to write a song about it. at the end of the song u hear a girl talking and that is the artist talking about her painting. a lot of african spiritual symbolisim in this song. the demo version is very raw and has more of a sad feeling to it.

I cranked the volume and this is what I could hear of what the artist is saying:

This is an African legend
It’s a love story
And uh it’s about uh two people
They were, they were very much in love
From different tribes
And they’re um, they were going to be sacrificed
And after they died, God made them into elephants
Because African believe that elephants are immortal
And then he put, he made the elephants body the system
Is just the female in the word it symbolizes,
you know, uh the freedom of love
and love of flower tell them that the
abstract beautiful
that you can see whatever you want to see
but before the hunters they used to uh,
to take the elephants youthfully
and um, he, he, he put the symbol on them
so that everybody will know that they are hope____
and this is the story and um ___________________

this is my favourite song in the world by my favourite band. for me, it means to be in love with someone that after it all you cannot be with in the long run, but will be with once, if not from time to time. the 'meadow', it is that place where you go in your head, the place where you can see yourself with this person, the perfect place. my two best friends and i always sung this song together. since then times have changed but i always can see them there when i sing this song in my meadow

One of my most favorite songs by (hed) p.e. And I think this song has a very special message to it, a special meaning to the person who wrote it. You can all guess what this song means, but my weird mind tells me we arent really supposed to know the meaning behind this. Stupid me..

addition to nicn64's post:

so that everybody will know that they are __holy__
and this is the story and__ I'm very much in love__

These two additions make a difference in the interpretation of the song. Everybody seems to have a piece of the puzzle, but in my opinion they need to all come together. Jetercp said that the woman talking is the artist and I think she sounds like she has a french accent and the lyrics say "I saw you in France." Also, Joey Kong pointed out the picture frame reference, both clues point to the artist heard at the end as the female subject of the song.

Jahred is of Brazilian descent which would explain the inspiration from African symbolism and the painting shown to him by the artist perfectly illustrates the connection between the pair: two people, very much in love but from different tribes. We can attribute this to different lifestyles, his as a so-cal "liar and sinner" and her's as French artist "with a man." Although they had this connection, they were going to be sacrificed, meaning for various reasons they could never be together in this lifetime. God made them into elephants because in African culture (one of the roots of Brazilian culture) elephants are immortal, meaning that after this lifetime they will have all of eternity to be free to love each other as they are. They marked the elephants as Holy so hunters would not kill them which would once again force them apart.

As for the meadow, although (hed) p.e. often changes the sound of their music the themes and subject matter are relatively consistent - most often about feelings of being isolated from society or something to that extent. Fuckerkid pointed out that elephants traditionally go to meadows or "elephant graveyards" when they are ready to die. The meadow is the place in Jahred's mind where he goes to wait for his French artist. He's "got nowhere else to go" because he feels society doesn't accept him as he is, because if he was accepted then they could be together, "I could be a star like you, special like you." To him, this isn't the case so he'll go to the meadow where he can wait for his lover and then they can finally be together.

This is one of Hed's most profound and touching songs - it truly captures the bittersweet existence of humankind.
