I was hanging upside-down from the overpass
Waiting to discover something about the world
I couldn't get with the program
And I couldn't listen to them
It was like trying to think in reverse

And I don't want to slide into apathy
And I don't want to die in captivity
But these monsters
Follow me around
Hunting me down
Try to wipe me out
Wipe me out
Wipe me out
Wipe me out

Yeah I was hiding away underwater
Waiting for distance and buying some time
Trying to be two hundred thousand years younger
So I could excuse myself from human kind
Coz I don't want to be a container
Or a bastard with a ten page disclaimer
But these monsters
Spin me around
Get me down!
Just try to shut me out
Shut me out
Shut me out
Shut me out

Hold it in your hand
Hold it in your hand
Hold it in your hand
Believe it me, believe in it, believe

(Shut me out)
I was hiding away underwater
Waiting for distance, waiting for time.
And I don't want to slide into apathy, and I don't
And I don't want to live in captivity

Ohh ohh ohh, Ohh Ohh Ohhhh
(Shut me out)

General Comment:There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that this song is about society, just as CompleteNirvana said.

General Comment:This has to be my favourite SFK song, like someone said up there ^^^ can't remember who right now, this is the song that made me a permanent fan of SFK.

    My favourite part is:
I was hiding away under water
Waiting for distance and buying some time
Trying to be two hundred thousand years younger
So i could excuse myself from humankind

I lovd it, to me... it seems like he's trying to distance himself from humanity so he wouldnt have to deal with all the hassle and struggle it brings...

General Comment:Typo in my comment! I meant "I WILL make myself feel better", not I'm.

General Comment:This song is amazing. It feels like he was talking about me when he wrote it! Like 'geek' said, it's a "I'm WILL make myself feel better" song. When you start getting angry at yourself for feeling depressed, or not being able to do what you keep telling yourself to do. & the line "trying to be 200 thousand years younger", when you just want to go back to being a little kid when you don't have to think. Well, that's just what I think it means. I could be completely wrong.

General Comment:I feel this song a lot of the time. Wanting to distance myself from the human race, when your watching the news or something, and realising, surely this wasnt was what was intended...

    General Comment:Deja Vudette?

This song is hardly heavy in the metaphor department.

General Comment:paul dempsey is a great writer.. lets just hope he doesn't write a book of poetry and fuck his career.. i love him to pieces and all his songs.
    they're brilliant

and i have no idea what this song means.. because metaphors are too hard.. i listen to the tune.. and it creates its own emotions
