Lyrics for Careful Where You Stand as interpreted by typo

Careful Where You Stand Lyrics
I feel safe, I feel warm
When you're here and I do no wrong
I am cured when I'm by your side
I'm alright, alright

I am safe when I am with you
And I feel warm if you want me to
I am cured when I'm by your side
I'm alright

Careful where you stand, my love
Careful where you lay your head
It's true we're always looking out for one another

I feel safe when I am with you
And I feel warm when you want me to
I am cured when you are around
I'm alright

Careful where you stand, my love
Careful where you lay your head
It's true we're always looking out for one another

So, I like a quiet time, please
Yeah, I like a quiet time

And careful where you stand
Now, careful where you stand

I disagree somewhat. I think this song is about an equal loving relationship that just feels right. I believe it's equal and the love is returned because he says they're always looking out for eachother. The only part I can't really understand is why he says
"So, I like a quiet time, please
Yeah, I like a quiet time"
Maybe he just wants a quiet time to reflect on this love and how it has the power to make him "feel cured". Overall I think this is a beautiful song...I can't believe more people haven't replied to it!

I agree with AgathaKavka. The song is about somebody who's desperately in love with somebody he can never have.
JPlay, i think that the verse you don't understand means that he's fed up. He doesn't want to think or fight anymore and so he just needs some quiet time for himself. That's what I think...

This might sound strange but I agree with both AgathaKavka and Jplay. I think this song is about someone who is desperately in love with someone and although she really cares for him, she doesn't share the same feelings. She feels bad that there is nothing that she can do to help him: she can't make herself love him in return and he realizes this. He doesn't want to see her racked with guilt so "he'll feel better if she wants him to." But even if he can't BE with her, it still helps just to be with her. All he asks is that she be careful with how she treats him because she has the ability to make him feel really good or really depressed.

I always thought the "quiet time" line had one of two meanings. Either sometimes he needs to get away because having her around can sometimes be a painful reminder of what he doesn't have. Or maybe it's his way of saying I need to move on and leave you because the pain of being this close to you without the same feelings in return is just too much.

But either way, the two really do care for eachother, even if the feelings aren't the same, and they will always be looking out for one another.

I think that it may have to do with a friend who he is in love with. She is in another relationship and he is worried about her, and thinks she may end up hurt. He does so much for her, and she does alot for him, but he is not in a situation to tell her his concerns and of his love for her.

Yeah, but i might have these lyrics fitting how i want them to.

I agree with tsdude. I think the song is about a friend he is in love with and is trying to warn her of despair that is coming into her life. The lines, "Careful where you stand, my love. Careful where you lay your head. It's true we're always looking out for one another." makes me think that he's definitely trying to save her and warn her about something that may happen. Them being really good friends is where the equal partnerships comes to play in my mind.

kick ass song....
i feel like this song is a person who is obviously in love with someone and wants everything for them and wants to be in and take part in their life. this song can show that relationships arent all bad, sure, some of them have their share of hard shit, but then theres the people youre with that you just love being with and this song reflects that

Coldplay's songs about heartbreak hit home. They create the exact mood. They portray perfectly what we all feel. They are perfect reflections of feelings. They apply to your own situations. How do you know what heartbreak is supposed to "sound" like? Coldplay's nailed the sound perfectly. Just makes ya wanna cry...

i kinda see this song in a different way...i guess it's from experience or something. but i think this song is about getting all those old feelings of love, security etc...back when that special someone is around. i guess i kinda see it as ...pls don't get too close to me or else all these old feelings are just going to re-surface, which wouldn't be an ideal. i dunno.
well...it's a beautiful song that makes me sad.

Yeah, I agree with sleepy_head.
I think the song is about being in love with someone who is really your other half, and you always have eachothers backs, and there is a level of comfort and trust and respect between the two that is profound.

I really don't see how this song is about heartbreak at all. I think it's a reflection on a mature, real, thriving relationship. Maybe about Paltrow?

I see it as two people who love each other, and they feel so sfe when they are together. When he says "Careful where you stand...", he's just looking out for her and making her feel safe and warm.
And quiet time would be just sitting together and enjoying just being near the other peson.
This si a great song.

This tune is about not being loved in return. About some girl or guy who is in love with a friend but they know that their friend doesn't love them back. They'd do anything just to keep that friend in their life because he/she means so much to the person. "I feel warm when you want me to" The person who is inlove with the friend will basically do what his/her friend wants without showing a deep true love so he/she doesn't lose them. It's really upsetting and sad that this love cannot be returned but shows just how much a person can mean to another and just how much they want them to remain in their lives no matter what the cost is .. even if it's having to hide feelings of love.

Everyone is looking too deep into the unrequited love explanation, which is just plain wrong.

While there are implications that the persona's girlfriend has more power over him that he has over her - "I feel warm when you want me to" - there is nothing in the song that suggests his feelings are not returned.

The lyrics certainly don't look into the girl's reaction to the relationship, so it's impossible to assert what her feelings are. She could love him, she could think he's a jerk. It's more likely the former than the latter, or else he wouldn't be "by her side," but because this song is really just an affirmation of the singer's love for someone, we'll never know what she thinks of him.

However, the fact that they're "always looking out for one another" would suggest reciprocity in the relationship: it isn't just a one-sided love.

So don't feel too sorry for the guy.

Oh, and yes, Chris's voice is awesome, as is the guitar intro.

Whether you interpret this song as a one of unrequited love, or of reciprocated love, it should just be treasured as a beautiful piece of art. Chris Martin is incredibly talented.

this song really touches me.., in fact it moves me to tears a lot of the time, since I'm a sappy wuss. i like to listen to it before i go to sleep sometimes, on repeat... so soft and light, with that mysterious guitar threaded throughout the song.

"I am cured when I'm by your side
I'm alright, alright
I am safe when I am with you,"

one of my favorites of theirs, and one of my theme songs of the moment. as for whether or not it's about reciprocated feelings, i don't know... honestly, I've never thought of that angle of the song, I just see it more as him stating how much he loves the person he's singing to, and just letting the person know how being near the person affects him, and why he needs a break from things sometimes.

this song is simply beautiful, regardless of the lyrics.

I think that it's of reciprocated love, simply because it says "And I feel warm when you want me to"........ I think saying "careful where you stand" might show fears that the person being written about might get hurt in the real world. Just a song of worry. But it's a very, very beautiful. song.

The lyrics are awesome :) I can't agree with comments that it's about unhappy love. The author must be very vulnerable but he forgets about all the problems when he's with that one, special person. It's definately pure love song :) But... Punkt widzenia zalezy od punktu siedzenia ;) :D

I do too, CorrespondingShapes.

I think it's about someone watching the one they love making all the wrong choices and their live going downhill, but all you can do is be there for them.

This is a really unique song. I heard it 2 days ago and I can't stop thinking about it. The melody of it really makes me feel peaceful. Its like something you'd hear in a dream. Chris' voice is so relaxing.

I guess the song is about being in love or liking someone, trusting them a lot.
