    I agree about the content of the song. Rape changes people, especially children. Due to a court order decades ago, I once had to help send an 18 month old baby back to the home where he had been abused by the mother's boyfriend. Within a few weeks the baby was back in our shelter after having been molested/raped by his maternal grandparents (both of them). I don't condone killing, but life in prison would be appropriate. I often wonder, though, what creates a rapist. At one stage in his/her life he was an innocent, precious child. Someone wrote on his/her slate to help create the monster within him. It's very sad.

  General Comment:My (boy) friend told me to listen this song and you know what's funny? At the moment, I'm in the middle of writing a story about a girl named Jayne who gets back in contact with her emotionally abusive dad. Just a funny coincidence, don't you think?

  Sadly, the events portrayed in this song WEREN'T fictional at all. The events in the song weren't all that happened to Janie, either..
  After she killed the bastard, she was going to be released from the arrest free of charge because of the circumstances. Sadly that news never reached her; after 18 years of torture, she couldn't stand the thought of jail, and she killed herself.

  General Comment:this is an awesome song and i havent ever killed anyone but i was raped by my cousin and i know what she felt like she was useless and no one would ever understand i didnt tell anyone for 6 years b/c i was scared no one would believe me .

  General Comment:I agree with [missbekka] and Fortification about the way the music complements the lyrics. This is a great song, probably Aerosmith's best.
  
  The verses feature a narrator explaining what has happened and why. I've always felt the chorus ("Run away from the pain") with Tyler's tortured, pleading voice represented what was going on in Janie's mind most of her life. She wasn't thinking it only during the abuse or killing described in the verses, but it was a constant thought throughout her life.
  
  I really admire the way Tyler was able to pull so much emotion and meaning out of five simple words.
