Nothing suffocates you more than
The passing of everyday human events
Isolation is the oxygen mask you make
Your children breath into survive

But I'm not a slave to god
That doesn't exist
And I'm not a slave to world
That doesn't give a shit

And when we were good
You just closed your eyes
So when we are bad
We'll scar your minds

Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!
Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!

You'll never grow up to be a big-rock-star-
Celebrated-victim-of-your-fame
They'll just cut our wrists like
Cheap coupons and say that death
Was on sale today

And when we were good
You just closed your eyes
So when we are bad
We'll scar your minds

But I'm not a slave to god
That doesn't exist
And I'm not a slave to world
That doesn't give a shit

The death of one is a tragedy
The death of one is a tragedy
The death of one is a tragedy
The death of millions is just a statistic

But I'm not a slave to god
That doesn't exist
And I'm not a slave to world
That doesn't give a shit
But I'm not a slave to god
That doesn't exist
And I'm not a slave to world
That doesn't give a shit

Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!
Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!

General Comment:Honestly I think its about conforming to what the "Higher Ups" in society want, be it "religious" people who promote hate and intolerance, government attacking entertainment or even an individual's peer group pressuring them to do something, hence the repeated references to slavery.

My Interpretation:i think this song is about telling the people to not be so gullible and believe in whatever one person has to say. this is seen in the line 'im not a slave to a God that doesn't exist'. to a lot of people especially the christians, they tend to think that this refers to the God mentioned in the Bible but i beg to differ. I don't think that this 'God' is the God of the Bible but it is the very things that the human race as a whole worship today and it can be anything e.g. the government or a religious leader. and the line that follows after 'i'm not a slave to a world who doesn't give a shit' is quite clear-cut and straightforward where this world we live in, the people are getting more and more ignorant and self-centered. they simply couldn't give a shit. my favorite part is 'when we were good, you just close your eyes, so when we are bad, we'll scar your mind'. this seems to warn those who don't give a shit that if you don't give a shit now, don't blame me when some real shit happens to you in the future.

My Opinion:Maybe he is saying that everyone is actualy being raised the same way in life and people are slaving through the generations for the same thing, but in the end, all that slaving did'nt help at all, since we all die in the end.

My Interpretation:I don't think the "god that doesn't exist" is referring to God in the Bible. This song doesn't have anything to do with Satanism or rejecting religion, I believe Manson is referring the expectations of society, no one actually sets these, we just pretend they're important. The powerful expectations, the god, doesn't really exist. So we shouldn't be slaves to them.

My Interpretation:I think the Stalin quote of "the death of one is a tragedy, the death of a million is just a statistic" is added to show how the sense of conformity affects society as a whole. We "die" when we lose our individuality, and it may seem sad when somebody gives up their identity to fit in. But when it happens to everyone in society, it's just the social norm, it's nothing sad to us like it should be. Also in the music video the sign that says "We're all happy in America" shows how America as a whole, the conformity of it all, kills who we really are.

General Comment:i do not see this actually refering anything towards an atheist view. i am christian eclectic and i love manson so people shouldnt try to force us into a mold of your own creation. i see it more as he sees so many people in the world acting as a god. they are the gods that dont exist. the governmont could also be seen as a god that doesnt exist because they are falsely naming themselves gods. isolation mask is referring to how children are taught one way. socialy correct ways set by a false god. the coupons being like our wrist sounds as if he is saying that we do not view others or their views as any more important than a coupon that can be destroyed and little will change. in truth we shouldnt be socially outcast because of the fake gods people try to name themselves.

General Comment:The line "I'm not a slave to a God that doesn't exist" can be taken in two ways...
One, he's saying "I dont believe in God, so im not following Him
OR, he's saying "if God didn't exist, i wouldn't follow Him"
Both have completely different meanings, so that line might even suggest that Manson believes in God.
Of course, with his reputation, its harder to believe.
But just a thought to consider (:

General Comment:The first verse is about how fuck up the world is, so we must put our "children" in "isolation" so they will "survive" or in other words dont become a soceity fuck up.

General Comment:Why is it that christian commentators refuse to see any artist they enjoy as not a christian, no matter how clear they make it in the lyrics? Marilyn Manson is a Satanist. Manson was given the title of Reverend Manson by Church of Satan founder Anton Lavey. And before anyone says this, let me say that the "if he is a satanist, then he believes in God, and is therefore a Christian" argument doesn't work
    1. prefering Satan to Christ is definitely not Christian, if you don't believe me ask people at Church and see what they say.
    2. Satanists also do not tend to believe in God, Christ, or Satan as actual beings. Satanists of Lavey's variety view Satan as principle, not a supernatural being.

Not that it matters, but I'm neither.

If you aren't able to accept that Manson is not a christian, you REALLY have no business posting on Manson. Sorry!

General Comment:I remember reading somewhere that the "and when we were good you just closed your eyes so when we are bad we'll scar your minds" was a reference to how it's pretty jacked when children do something great and their parents are the first people to say "That's my son/daughter! They got it all from me!" but as soon as they fuck up (like during Columbine when this album came out), those parents turn around and say "I have NO idea where they learned how to be like that! It had to have come from somewhere else!"

But I also think that lyric just basically means that nobody really gives a shit when you try to do good. Because being "good" has become a chore. Being "good" is something that God tells you to do which is why a lot of people do it. They don't bother to treat people with kindness because they WANT to, but because they feel as though they HAVE to.

This is one of my favorite Manson themes, and I just love going around singing the chorus! "I'm not a SLAVE to a god that DOESN'T EXIST." It makes me get a lot of dirty looks from people, but I don't give a fuck. You don't see an atheist like me going around giving people dirty looks when they belt out their praise Jesus songs. Like another user on here said, if Christians can produce their music, we should be able to enjoy ours too.
