twelve men broke loose in seventy-three
from Millhaven maximum security
twelve pictures lined up, across the front page
seems the Mounties had a summertime war to wage
the chief told the people they had nothing to fear
said, "the last thing they wanna do is hang around here"
they mostly came from towns with long french names
but one of the dozen was a hometown shame

same pattern on the table
same clock on the wall
been one seat empty, eighteen years in all
freezing slow time, away from the world
he's 38 years old, never kissed a girl

we were sitting around the table, heard the telephone ring
father said he'd tell em if he saw anything
heard the tap on my window in the middle of the night
held back the curtain for my older brother Mike

see my sister got raped, so a man got killed
local boy went to prison, man's buried on the hill
folks went back to normal when they closed the case
but they still stare at their shoes when they pass our place

my mother cried, "the horror has finally ceased!"
he whispered, "yeah, for the time being at least"
over her shoulder, on the squad car megaphone
said, "let's go Michael, son, we're taking you home."

General Comment:First off i would like to apologize to all the american music fans who have suffered abuse in this forum. you have to understand its an inferiority complex of sorts. The Hip owe there survival at least in part to American colleges who were booking them long before they ever got a recording contract. As far as 38 years old being fictional i have doubts caused by there refusal to play it live. A truly tragic ballad this song might have put the hip over the top if it had been properly promoted (where was the video) This song pulls at the emotional strings of such a wide demographic its hard to believe that the record companies allowed them to bury it.The first time i played it for my wrap, hip hop consumed daughter it brought tears to her eyes the whole composition of this song is brilliant from the metaphor "thirty eight years old never kissed a girl" to the lead guitar hook that sounds like (at least to me) a women crying. Perhaps somebody will cover it and make a fortune

General Comment:have to agree with Leafsneverdie. getting upset with americans for not embracing The Hip, is a waste of energy. If Americans are "smart" enough to appreciate a band like Death Cab for Cutie, they can handle Gord's lyrics too.

Personally I believe America is just too big to appreciate a band like the Hip. A smaller community like canada can more easily embrace a complex band like them, especially when you get a chance to see them live on a regular basis.

oh yeah, and this is a great song, I get shivers every time i hear it. I don't know that i would kill a man who raped my ister, but i would f*&k him up pretty bad.

The line "lets go michael, son ,i'm taking you home" resonates. the cop knows the man, knows the family, probably knows the man doesnt deserve to be there, but he has to take him back anyway.

General Comment:instead of bashing each others' country just enjoy the hip, I'm American, I can interpret the lyrics....
But i guess since all americans are idiots, what point do i have to make. Music isn't created to bash another persons culture over.

General Comment:drfunk you are so uneducated it's ridiculous. I think it's true that The Hips music is far too intelligent for many of us Americans to comprehend. It could just be you though because you don't seem to bright yourself. Baseball was invented by our Canadian neighbours to the North by the way. You're just American though, what do you know?

My Opinion:bosco9 your comment has to be the most biased and self serving comment I have seen in a long time. Music is not celebrated by borders like hokey is to Canada, Baseball to the USA or soccer is to Europe. Canada produces one unique artist that your in love with and all the sudden America has to forget Tracy Chapman, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Hendrix and the hundreds of other superior artists that have come before ‘the hip’. Does tragically hip compare to some of the great American artists? I think you need to come back to reality… Canada’s contribution to ‘intelligent’ music is laughable compared to the decades of amazing artist that come from America. I think you have shown how stupid you are by comparing tragically hip to American pop music. But then again… your Canadian. What do you know?

General Comment:I love how this song lists all types of people.

    "12 men broke loose"
    "Chief told the people"
    "never kissed a girl"
    "Father said he'd tell em"
    "brother mike"
"sister got raped, so a man got killed"
"local boy went to prison, man's buried on the hill"
    "folks went back to normal"
    "my mother cried the horror"
"let's go Michael, son, we're taking you home."

It's so chilling when the megaphone calls him by his full name and calls him son. The sad part is that he's actually been in prison longer then he's lived with his parents.

I think all those mentions of family really make this song hit your heartbone harder. It gives it a human touch. This song is so well written it's almost a short story. I would call it 'The Face They Covered'.

General Comment:a band like the tragically hip would never become famous in the manufactured glitzy american music scene...I can't even think of a U.S mainstream band to compare them to

General Comment:There are just some bands that are uniique to their own country and never see fame outside of it.. Canadians have a very unique culture.. and some of our bands..., their songs people just wouldn't get in the U.S.A... they would never become famous there because its a different level...think of all the bands that are so famous and legendary in Canada, and no one outside of canada has heard of them

They wont even put a pedifile behind bars because he claimed it was a fantasy but they;ll put a guy that did what he had to do cause he raped an important person behind bars. Weres the justice people.
