they shot a movie once, in my hometown
everybody was in it, from miles around
out at the speedway, some kind of Elvis thing
well I ain't no movie star
but I can get behind anything
yeah I can get behind anything

get it out, get it all out
yeah stretch that thing
make it last, make it last
at least until the supper bell rings
well the taxi driver likes his rhythm
never likes the stops
throes of passion, throes of passion
when something just threw him off

sometimes the faster it gets
the less you need to know
but you gotta remember
the smarter it gets
the further its gonna go
when you blow at high dough
when you blow at high dough

baby I feel fine
I'm pretty sure it's genuine
it makes no sense, no it makes no sense
but I'll take it free anytime
whoever fits her usually gets her
it was the strangest thing how she moved so fast, moved so fast
into that wedding ring

out at the speedway, same Elvis thing
well I can't catch her, but I can get behind anything
yea I can get behind anything
well I can get behind anything

General Comment:"Blow at High Dough'' is a term that means basically don't get ahead of yourself.Nothing more follow the song and put that in prospective.Elvis is used because he got ahead of himself with his movie career.he wasn't ready that's why he went back to singing.I can get behind anything just means he knows he can get behind anything thats why he always gets ahead of himself or Blow at High Dough.Second verse get it all out is describing get it all out when getting ahead of your self you will learn more by getting ahead of yourself then looking back at what you jumped over.when the supper bell rings means you are in trouble for getting ahead of yourself.taxi driver likes his rhythm but don't like the stops means hes ahead of himself and he needs to pause to figure it out or stop playing. The faster it gets the smarter it gets means the faster you go then the more time you get to look back making you smarter because you have more time to see the picture now.the next verse is about someone jumping ahead and getting married when she has done this before meaning the person marring her is jumping ahead and just saying i do without sitting back and thinking about what she has done in the past.Out at the speedway means your fast to jump ahead, same old elvis thing is just saying the same thing because elvis jumped ahead of himself in his acting career, well i cant catch he means she jumps so far ahead of herself he cant keep up ,he can get behind anything means he knows he can not jump ahed of himself but he always gets ahead of himself.

My Interpretation:There is a rumor that a movie may be shot in our community...I suddenly get the meaning of "Blowing High Dough".
It really is just about how people suddenly see dollar signs when a movie Company hovers near. Everyone wants to be part of it and hopes to get in on the huge amounts of money that are spent. Also some of the possible glory.
It follows that a woman might just marry for a similar reason...Not recommended, but it would be an issue that Gord Downey would be likely too comment on.

General Comment:Not sure why people have to say "Blowing High Dough"..As much as it sound like drugs and money i think its just metaphor.

Its Blow at High Dough. Its just another way of saying not to get ahead of yourself.

General Comment:I always thought it was literally about an expensive cocaine habit. That certainly explains the song title as well as anything else. Lots of lines (pun intended) that fit this too..

The first verse is about working on a movie set. Certainly will get you access to that lifestyle from there. "I can get behind anything" I think of as getting involves.

"get it out, get it all out, yeah stretch that thing" - seems pretty self explanatory. Taking out all your stuff and making lines on the table.

The bit about the taxi driver liking his rhythm and not liking the stops is a good analogy for someone enjoying their high and not enjoying coming down. Something just throwing him off...well that could be a number of things (getting sketched out).

The faster it gets, the less you need to know...when you're really pushing the habit to the extreme you don't need to know what's going on. But the smarter you are about it, the longer you can ride that habit out (without getting busted, too messed up or going broke).

"whoever fits her usually gets her" I think means that anyone can get into the stuff. And the wedding ring symbolizes an all out addiction.

General Comment:I have a different interpretation of this song entirely.

I will analyze it and offer my opinion verse by verse.

"They shot a movie once, in my hometown
everybody was in it, from miles around
out at the speedway, some kind of Elvis thing
well I ain't no movie star
but I can get behind anything
yeah I can get behind anything"

I think that this verse is a man explaining that a movie was made in his hometown at a speedway involving Elvis somehow. It seems to me that everyone interprets the line, "I can get behind anything" as meaning support anything but I`ve always thought it meant I can get behind the wheel of anything. My reasoning; the person speaking is saying "I ain`t no movie star but I can get behind anything" and it`s already been established that they are at a speedway, suggesting despite his lack of acting skills, the speaker can perform very well in a driving scene.

"Get it out, get it all out
    yeah stretch that thing
make it last, make it last
at least until the supper bell rings
well the taxi driver likes his rhythm
    never likes the stops
throes of passion, throes of passion
when something just threw him off"

I think the speaker changes in this line and it is now from the perspective of a child (a young boy most likely) hence the line "At least until the supper bell rings". The child is at the speedway watching the speaker from the first verse, a taxi driver who is doing the driving scene(s) and telling him to "Make it last and get it all out", meaning push it to it`s limit for the entertainment of those watching until they have to leave, "At least until the supper bell rings". The line "Something just threw him off" I think refers to the driver/speaker #1 being distracted from his driving by a girl he sees at the speedway.

    "Sometimes the faster it gets
the less you need to know
    but you gotta remember
    the smarter it gets
    the further its gonna go
when you blow at high dough
when you blow at high dough"

The chorus is saying sometimes when you are going really fast in life you can get by on less information but you will go further if you slow down and take time to gather that information. This is a really neat chorus because IMO it is refering to the technique of driving in the film. "Faster it gets the less ypu need to know" the less you need to know about how to drive well, "But the smarter it gets the further it`s gonna go", the better driver you are the better you will do, suggesting that the chorus is speaker #1 again, or perhaps both speakers share that philosophy.

    "Baby I feel fine
    I'm pretty sure it's genuine
it makes no sense, no it makes no sense
but I'll take it free anytime
whoever fits her usually gets her
it was the strangest thing how she moved so fast, moved so fast
    into that wedding ring"

The final verse refers to the girl that distracted the driver. He is telling her or the original audience of the song that he feels great but doesn`t know why although he isn`t questioning it, "I`ll take it free anytime". The line "Whoever fits her usually gets her" is saying that whoever suits this girl can get her. The line "It was the strangest thing how she moved so fast into that wedding ring" is expresssing the speaker`s astonishment at how this girl is willing to marry whoever "fits her" bill.

I apologize for the length of this analysis btw :)

General Comment:I think this song is a comment on how movies are made, and how it affects he general public. " The smarter it is, the further its gonna go" applies to plot lines and character dialogue. "The faster it is, the less you need to know" could apply to action flicks and how senseless action, driving, shooting doesn't require any thought to viewers. As for the term "Blow At High Dough," I agree with edge24, about how it references the public and how they react to the production, In my hometown of Sudbury, On, a Hollywood movie is being shot here, closing down a major street and opening many short-lasting jobs. Will it last? No way. In a month, it will all be gone. 'Blow at High Dough" could also apply to actors or directors whos carrers ended in their prime due to unfortunate events (Micheal.J.Fox.)

General Comment: there's nothing about porn here

    - a movie was shot in the area
    - there were a bunch of big names/big money floating around for a while
    - the locals got excited about the commotion - something happening in a small place
    - some got good paying, although temporary, jobs, alot of extras were needed (crowd scenes)
    - the money didn't last long for most people - they had a good time - a big, but temporary, party scene

after all Dan Akroyd also comes from Kingston & returns every summer - parties ensue - he often promotes events, concerts & he has even made movies here like one of the Blue Brothers movies

General Comment:Ok people, let`s not get patriotic here...

This song is about materialism and spending as much as you can, as fast as you can.

    sometimes the faster it gets
the less you need to know
    but you gotta remember
    the smarter it gets
    the further its gonna go
when you blow at high dough

Gord`s talking about how people will blow their whole check on shit they don`t need, while the ones who put their education to use get more money and therefore spend more.

well I ain't no movie star
but I can get behind anything
yeah I can get behind anything

Not everybodies a movie star, but everybody wants to have all the money and stuff that movie stars do. If they see a movie star advertise some product, they`ll go out and buy it.

General Comment:I always just figured that the song was about some amateur doing driving stunts for a low-budget movie. Most of the lines can be interpreted sexually, but I never thought it was about porn. If that is the main idea, then how do you explain the line about the wedding ring?

My Interpretation:I doubt that the way i interpret this song is what it means but; I interpret the song to have to do with amatuer saturday nite auto racing and the auro/lifestyle we live. If i was going to put money on an actual meaning of the song - i would definitly lean towards what you guys have already discussed. Just tossing in my two cents, and sharing another way that the hip is with me in my everyday life...
