Lyrics for Brass In Pocket as interpreted by spliphstar

Brass In Pocket Lyrics
Got brass in pocket
Got Bottle, I'm gonna use it
Intention, I feel inventive
Gonna make you, make you, make you notice

Got motion, restrained emotion
Been driving, Detroit leaning
No reason, just seems so pleasing
Gonna make you, make you, make you notice

(CHORUS)
Gonna use my arms
Gonna use my legs
Gonna use my style
Gonna use my sidestep
Gonna use my fingers
Gonna use my, my, my imagination

'Cause I'm gonna make you see
There's nobody else here
No one like me
I'm special, so special
I gotta have some of your attention, give it to me

Got rhythm, I can't miss a beat
Got new ne skank, it's so reet
Got something, I'm winking at you
Gonna make you, make you, make you notice

(CHORUS)
Gonna use my arms
Gonna use my legs
Gonna use my style
Gonna use my sidestep
Gonna use my fingers
Gonna use my, my, my imagination

'Cause I'm gonna make you see
There's nobody else here
No one like me
I'm special, so special
I gotta have some of your attention
Give it to me

'Cause I'm gonna make you see
There's nobody else here
No one like me
I'm special, so special
I gotta have some of your attention
Give it to me!

This song is so perfect. Just confidence and no negitivity. Best tune ever. More people should have it as their theme tune.

This song is about masturbation, with her little friend.
Read the lyrics and think about it !

Hahaha. No, it's not about masturbation. It's more about seeing someone you really like, and wanting to impress them - like, "look at me, I'm great, take me home!"

Chrissie Hynde is the epitome of woman in rock, as far as I'm concerned.

Well I would have to agree with Missme and Moonstar, except for the title and first line "Got Brass in Pocket" - what the heck is that exactly? And the bottle - what does that have to do with anything and how does she want to use it? This is where the vibrator analogy might come in, but then who is the "you" who she is talking to and trying to impress? And what does "got new skank its so reet" mean?

Confusing. Maybe the point was to make it ambiguous whether she is talking to a man or her vibrator, as in "they might as well be the same" or "I just discovered a new vibrator, and wow it rocks my world"? This song sure looks silly in all capital letters.

A lot of people say they've "got bottle" -- confidence. The brass in pocket must be a metaphor for something -- I'm not sure quite whay though...

Maybe she's masturbating in front of someone.

I think "brass in pocket" is also a metaphor for having confidence.

brass in pocket, you idiots, means that she has money on her, and bottle probably refers to alcohol or possibly purfume.
a confidence manifesto...

OK I can understand the phrases "got brass in pocket" and "got bottle." Though I've never heard anyone other than her use either of those phrases, they do make sense in the context of this song. Now for "got new skank it's so reet" - that's weird.

I would like to propose that this song is about shooting someone. Though there are references to making someone notice using style and sidestep, if you read the song’s lyrics and think of the brass in her pocket being bullets, perhaps she is going to not make this person notice on a level of romance (though it seems she has tried before), maybe she is so frustrated about not being able to make this person notice using her looks that she is going to shoot this person. It may seem that this song is simple and about girl meets guy, but I get the impression that this song is about something a little bit deeper than love, perhaps hate. Maybe she once wanted to go out with this guy but he didn’t want to and now she is so mad she wants to kill him. I think the lines “Got new skank it’s so reet, got something I’m winking at you” have double meanings that may seem like dancing, but are not. Maybe the new skank is a metaphor for having a plan to kill someone and the “something” that she has when she is winking at the guy is a gun.

Just a thought.

chilling. I just listened to this song with gummomohawk's interpretation in mind and it creeped me out so much. It fits so much. why would she need money? she is a beautiful girl at a bar. drinks are free. and also if the bottle is not full of alcohol then it must be perfume and the . . .oh wait wait. no. It's just about a girl dancing to make a guy like her. case closed.

I'll bet she is an undercover cop and the brass in her pocket is her badge she is hiding. and i'll bet she has ben driving and detroit leanign because much like axle foley, she was once a detroit cop but has relocated to California in order to arrest prospective "Johns." Sticka banana in that tale pipe, genius!!!

The mysterious lyrics to Brass have baffled listeners for nearly two decades. What is "reet"? And what might a "new skank" be? "Got bottle - I'm gonna use it..."? It's not as mind-boggling as one might think. Skank is to move one's body rhythmically from side to side, moving the arms along with the rest of the body. "Reet" means righteous. So what's she talking about? She's got herself a new way of movin' and groovin' and it's hip. As for the not-so-listener-friendly "got bottle...", that is British slang meaning "courage or confidence".

I think "Brass in Pocket" is a gender-play on having "brass balls." She's got confidence like a man but she's a woman.

Skank is slang for a new dance (wiry and loose). This agrees with the new confidence theory. The word "rete" is probably the real word, and would mean a mesh, or network. So, this is definitely someone coming out into the place with what it takes to get this person to notice her.

Also, we have to remember that this song was popular in the UK, so you should probably ask your closest British buddy to confirm this.

"Brass" means money. I am sure it is UK slang. Watch the video. She is a waitress and she picks up her tip and puts it in her pocket and says "got brass in pocket"

I have a couple theories about this song...

Having brass balls, being she's confident and giving it all to win the guy over.

I can also see where it's money in her pocket, and using it to get the guy as well.

I've heard about the masturbation reference before, but why would she be doing it in front of someone? Wait, don't answer that... TMI

Brass is northern English slang for money.
Bottle again is English slang for courage, she has moxie. She has balls.
Reet is again northern slang. It's so reet. She's alright. It's all good.
Skank is a dance, a way of moving.
I'm from the north of England. These are pretty common terms where I come from.
