Sibilant and macabre
Walpurgis sauntered in
Skies litten with five-pointed stars
The work of crafts surpassing sin
As She graced Her window ledge
- An orphaned gypsy nymph
This issue of the forest's bed
Skin flushed with sipped absinthe -
Her eyes revealed, as Brocken's peak
Tried once concealing Hell
A snow white line of divine freaks
In riot, where they fell...

The circus lurches in, a ring of promised delight
For seven days and seven festival nights
What wicked wonders lie within the comfines
Of the panther's den

She watches from a maypole, on the rip of Her tongue
The restless spirit of Christmas to come
A Gretel sick of merely sucking Her thumb
Than gingerbread men

Spawned scorned, abhorred by the aerial
She was the light of the world going down
War-torn, forlorn and malarial
She was found
Born in a burial gown

Unloosed, the chain of Her god-given cross
Seduced, now pagan ribbons swathe Her repose
In a carnival of souls sold and similarly lost

Too many decades misfit and mislaid
In innocence, a tender legend of prey
Parades Her second coming, now they're running afraid

Spawned scorned, abhorred by the aerial
She was the light of the world going down
War-torn, forlorn and malarial
She was found
Born in a burial gown

Now She moves with a predator's guile
Beyond the firelit circle of life
She soothes your cold heart for a while
Then matches its beat, synching in with a knife
She wrestles Her dreams with a delicate case
Espied by Her cross on the wall
And should She awake, through embrace or mistake
She would take Jesus
Bless foot forward and all...

Sibiliant and at last
The circus crawled away
With another lover in its arms
Dancing on Her grave...

General Comment:Cradle of Filth isn't fucking goth. They've said it themselves, and have corrected their music genre to be "extreme metal". You're not goth for listening to them, or any metal for that matter, twits.

ACTUAL goths listen to goth rock, death rock, and post-punk for the most part, and most I've met really fucking hate metal.

I'm not claiming to be goth, I like Cradle of Filth, but I know they don't fall under goth.
If you think you're goth for listening to them you're a fucking mall goth, which are just teenage dumb asses trying to be different and completely bastardizing the goth subculture.

    General Comment:slave2sin:

wWhat the fuck are you babbling about? I live in Idaho and it is not illegal, nor are there only censored versions of the CD. You just pulling this shit out of your ass? I have the CD right here in front of me, says parental advisory: explicit content right on it.

Why the fuck is marylin manson even being mentioned? Who the fuck is even commenting on CoF's pages if they don't even understand the difference?

God you kids piss me off.

Anyways; To business. Borknagar has the song meaning nearly spot on. although the song is a little shady as to exactly how she was changed, Borknagar's interpretation holds water with the rest of the lyrical content.

General Comment:Cradle isn't majorily black metal, I'd say they WERE extreme gothic metal. Now (as of, I'd say, Thornography) they are less gothic and more heavy, and some black metal as well.

General Comment:S'like Outland said, who says you can't be happy and like Cradle Of Filth music? This girl on the school bus I get sometimes asks me to share headphones with her, so I do and she always complains about how depressive my music is and how can I listen to it?
Well listening to Cradle Of Filth doesn't make me depressed. It makes me happy. Because that's the music I like. And stuff I like makes me happy. It's a bit of an obvious answer really isn't it? And another answer to that could be like what someone else I know said [also a COF fan] "If I'm miserable then knowing other people are more miserable than me can make me happy."
So whatever the hell you think, it's not like all rock songs are all "ooooh Im so depressed...." you could easily say the same about bloody well akon. "lonelllllyyy Im mister lonely I have nobody"
so screw anyone who thinks everything that falls into the category of rock music is immediatly depression.

Just thought I'd say that. Oh I've probably contradicted myself in several places of that speech but ignore it. RedFlag is an arseface.

General Comment:Omnia_faeces,I don't think there is any doubt she's clearly from birth marked as a witch and satanist.

Brocken's peak is a mountain in Germany which figures quite prominantly in both folklore and works of literature most notably, Goethe's Faust. It is supposedly where witches meet in Germany on Warlpurgisnacht, which is synonymous with May Eve.

The orphan is described as a "A Gretel sick of merely sucking her thumb than gingerbread men" which evokes the brothers Grimm fairy tale hansel and Gretel. This is interesting for three reasons: a) the fairy tale like Brocken Mountain has a Germanic origin, which helps to further place the story that Dani is telling; b) Hansel and Gretel are likewise abandoned in the woods to fend for themselves and c) Hansel and Gretel are at first rescued and taken in by a witch.

basically the song is about an orphan girl who runs off to join a satanist circus troupe

General Comment:I love CoF. My vocabulary must have been non-existant before I first heard them :P

Basically, it's about not knowing where you come from, or how you fit into the world, and then suddenly everything clicking and it making sense.

The girl was found in the forest, orphaned and wrapped in a grave shroud. She is taken in by the villagers (by a church or nunnery?) and is given a Christian upbringing.
She grows up, and one year a travelling carnival comes to town. She sneaks out, dressed in "ungodly" clothing, and goes to the fair.
In the morning, when the circus wagons roll out, there is one more person there than the night before.

Perhaps the circus was the family she was seperated from, and she finds her way home, or perhaps she is seduced away for some other reason, but either way she's found a new home.

General Comment:hey did you guys know that it is illegal in idaho to wear uncensored CoF shirts without going to questioning (i have two) and they only sell censored versions hear of nymphetamine. it sucks ass.

But cradle of filth is the best, they arent really even black metal, they are a genre unto themselves, and they also arenta a novelty act marilyn manson and other shock rockers (i do likethem though) are novelty, made to piss ppl off, they enjoy the music they play, and know how to write lyrics.

General Comment:Okay instead of fucking arguing about what everybody thinks of the band why not just say what the fuck you mean if you don't like them than why the fuck are you looking at the lyrics?

But anyways I've been racking my head over what this means and I think I have somewhat of an idea so here it is.

It is about a girl who was abandoned ( An orphaned gypsy nymph) found in on Brocken's Peak a Mountain in Europe I believe around Germany. The girl was found Walpurgis Night the eve of MayDay a Germanic Pagan Holiday. The Circus I think is figurative meaning it's not really refering the circus but a band of witches that were in delight to find the girl.

(She watches from a maypole, on the rip of Her tongue) A Maypole is pole decorates in wreathes and is danced around on MayDay (A Gretel sick of merely sucking Her thumb) Saying that she was corrupted when was a baby sucking her thumb.

Spawned scorned, abhorred by the aerial
She was the light of the world going down
    War-torn, forlorn and malarial
    She was found
    Born in a burial gown

As the girl grew up she was raised as a witch and scorned by it (abhorred by the aerial) abhorred means hate basicaly and aerial meaning like sky so she was hated god up in heaven for participating in witchcraft which is a sin against god. As for her being light going down she was probably the start of the world converting to pagan and abandoning christanity. The girl being born in a burial gown I believe is figurative as well not that she was actually born in a burial gown but her desitney was to die for her sins later in life.

Unloosed, the chain of Her god-given cross
Seduced, now pagan ribbons swathe Her repose
In a carnival of souls sold and similarly lost

This part is pretty self explantory as she grew older she left behind her christian believe if she had any to begin with but her family must of been christians she might have been found with a cross over her neck.

Too many decades misfit and mislaid
In innocence, a tender legend of prey
Parades Her second coming, now they're running afraid

All her life she has been taught pagan believes at such a tender and innocencent age (Parades Her second coming, now they're running afraid) She is showing off her new beleives the new her and getting so powerful that those who raised are becoming afraid of her power

Now She moves with a predator's guile
Beyond the firelit circle of life
She soothes your cold heart for a while
Then matches its beat, synching in with a knife
She wrestles Her dreams with a delicate case
Espied by Her cross on the wall
And should She awake, through embrace or mistake
    She would take Jesus
    Bless foot forward and all...

(Now She moves with a predator's guile) She lives how her new ideas and definence of by those who rasied her. She lives beyond the firelit circle of life she lived hidden away from the light of the world and when she is out in the world she defies pple as she was and killed anybody who got in her way or maybe christins I'm not sure on that part.

She wrestles Her dreams with a delicate case
Espied by Her cross on the wall
And should She awake, through embrace or mistake
    She would take Jesus
    Bless foot forward and all...

Ok this whole part means that she has dreams about her old christian believes and if she awakens from her dreams it wouldn't matter because shes to far corrupted with pagan believes to even bother converting back

    Sibiliant and at last
    The circus crawled away
With another lover in its arms
    Dancing on Her grave...

The band of witches left after the fesitival the celebration of MayDay (For seven days and seven fesitival nights) With another lover of chirst converted dancing on the grave of the old believes of christiany of the girl
