I would like to leave this city
This old town don't smell too pretty and
I can feel the warning signs running around my mind
And when I leave this island I'll book myself into a soul asylum
'Cause I can feel the warning signs running around my mind

So here I go, I'm still scratching around in the same old hole
My body feels young but my mind is very old
So what do you say?
You can't give me the dreams that are mine anyway
Half the world away, half the world away
Half the world away
I've been lost I've been found but I don't feel down

And when I leave this planet
You know I'd stay but I just can't stand it and
I can feel the warning signs running around my mind
And if I could leave this spirit
I'll find me a hole and I will live in it and
I can feel the warning signs running around my mind

Here I go, I'm still scratching around in the same old hole
My body feels young but my mind is very old
So what do you say ?
You can't give me the dreams that are mine anyway
Half the world away, half the world away
Half the world away
I've been lost I've been found but I don't feel down

No I don't feel down
No I don't feel down
I don't feel down
I don't feel down
Don't feel down
I don't feel down

General Comment:First took notice of this song on the Royle Family last year and just heard the entire song today and it struck a chord (no pun intended). The person "Androcles" is talking about sounds so much like me: stuck living in Dullsville (Perth, Australia) and still not out of this dump yet and my love is half the world away.

General Comment:I think this is about someone your very close to (friend/family member/maybe even lover), and you are slowly drifting apart. I can relate to it through friendship, as we slowly drifted apart until we were, metaphorically, half a world away from one another.

The bit where it says "And when I leave this planet, you know I'd stay but I just can't stand it" sums me up perfectly. I went through a tough time and became very low at one point, because of my friend.

"So what do you say? You can't give me the dreams that are mine anyway" almost sounds like they are asking the friend to come back, even though maybe they aren't the same people they once were.

I also relate to the "I've been lost, I've been found, but I don't feel down", because, after all that has happened, I'm kind of happier and look back on things as just a part of life.

General Comment:I've never really thought that the "half the world away" line might refer to a lover.
I always assumed it was more where he wanted to be, or where his mind was.
Must then I read sazzlepants post and that makes more sense as Liam would have been half the world away from Noel

General Comment:this song represents my life, especially the line "And when I leave this planet you know I'd stay but I just can't stand it ". i feel like where i live is just a wasteland of dreams and full of people with false hopes in life. i often feel like my dreams are too big for a girl from portsmouth and that living here is just holding me back. words can't describe how much i wanna leave. oasis are amazing!!

General Comment:This song seems to be about someone who lives in some dullsville town where their life and creativity can't thrive. For years they've had ambitions to leave and accomplish something great. But they've encountered a setback or two in their time, and are now feeling discouraged. "Scratching around in the same old hole" seems to indicate that they still haven't managed to get out of this dump yet. Though their body is still technically young, their mind seems very old because the years have gone by without them seeming to have gotten any closer to their goals. Their youthful spark is fading away.

The person who is "Half the World Away" is someone they're in love with, or a fantasy soulmate they've never met but they imagine is somewhere out there. But the dream of being with this wonderful person (real or imagined) doesn't do them any good as long as they're stuck in the same old town; the same rut. They're half the world away. Nobody can give them their dreams; it's something they're left to work for on their own.

General Comment:yea i truly love this song. When our family get togther, at new years and such like, my uncle and cousin will get the guitars out and they play and we all sing... its isnt at Partridge Family as it sounds but it really means alot. and of course it is the great theme tune of the excellent and sadly missed 'Royle Family'. The lyrics to me are about getting away and leaving this horrible town i live in and acheiving my goals... which are half the world away... in america actually. I can feel the warning signs because i seem to be fitting in more and more here and there are alarms going off in my head telling me not to let myself fit in or i'l stay here and i dont wanna! And i wouldnt mind to much leaving this planet as we live in a horrible world, a beleif affirmed by Comic Releif on Friday (just thought i would take that dig there) but i do think it was wirtten by Noel after an argument with Liam and so that is the real meaning but it means different things to everyone and that is howit was intended. I love it and it is one of my favourite oasis songs because of the melody, the lyrics and because it is so easy to listen to unlike alot of other oasis songs. xxx
