Seen you naked in the bath
Cigarette stains on your hands
Wilted flowers in a vase
I ask how are you
Yeah how are you?
I see the lipstick on your glass
I think you're drunk, I start to laugh
I find your note, the letters ran
It said I love you
Yeah I love you
Don't ask why, don't ask why
Don't ask why, don't ask why
Don't ask why, don't ask why, don't ask why
Sixteen candles down the drain
I watch you passed out forever
I touch your face, you start to smile
And on your note is my reply
I wish I loved you
I wish I loved you
Don't ask why, don't ask why
Don't ask why, don't ask why
Don't ask why, don't ask why, don't ask why
Sixteen candles down the drain
(The drain)
Sixteen candles down the drain
(The drain)
Sixteen candles down the drain
(The drain)
Sixteen candles down the drain
(The drain)
Don't ask why, don't ask why, don't ask why, don't ask why
Don't ask why, don't ask why, don't ask why
Sixteen candles down the drain
(The drain)
Sixteen candles down the drain
(The drain)
Sixteen candles down the drain
(The drain)
Sixteen candles down the drain
(The drain)

My Opinion:Now that I'm reading the lyrics along with the Molly 86 version from their Hits album, its not "the lettters ran" its "the letters read". The 86 version is much slower and almost acoustic.

I don't think it's him saying "On the note is my reply" like he wrote it on there post mortum. I think they had a breakup or something similar and that's her writing their final converstation over and over. I think she wrote "Don't ask way, don't ask why" over and over at the bottom of the note.

Basically the entire song is him finding her dead and the last two verses are her writing over and over don't ask why. Whether she's dead or not is confusing, the whole Passed out forever vs. I touch your face you start to smile. I think he might have found her right before she died of an overdose.

General Comment:The song was written based off a story one of the band members heard about a girl who attempted suicide after she fell for her teacher and got rejected. Most likely, its the attempted suicide thing. She is saying "I love you," he's saying "I wish I loved you"

General Comment:This is a song about a chick named Molly who is a drug-addict and eventually dies, the dude loves her, that's what it seems like to me. She committed suicide at 16, threw her life away with drug-addiction, "16 candles down the drain".

General Comment:She loves him. He wishes he loved her. They've wasted 16 years with each other.
I've been rocking out to this song for 15 years now. I fianlly just read the lyrics. Better late than never, I guess.

General Comment:Regardless of whether she is drunk or dead; I think it's obvious that Vinnie Dombroski of Sponge hooked up with a sixteen year old at some point.

General Comment:for some reason i have always loved this song even when i was younger and had no clue what it meant. i think that she wrote him a note that said 'i love you', and he gave it back saying 'i wish i loved you'. realizing that he didnt love her, she decided to kill herself. he walks in and laughs because he thinks she is drunk but then realizes that she is dead. i agree with boxermom that 'the letters ran' becuase they were wet and she died of an overdose. he sits there staring at her, probably in shock, and he is probably crying so when he touches her face, the tears blur his vision so it is easy to imagine that she is smiling.

General Comment:I think "her note" is a note he wrote her saying "I love you" but she answered back saying "I wish I loved you" and killed herself in the bath. "The letters ran" because they were wet, or maybe had blood on them. Most people who kill themselves in the bath cut their wrists, but if he didn't notice she was dead, I guess it could be pills, since she had a glass to wash them down with. When he touches her face, maybe he is trying to manipulate her face into a smile.

General Comment:the one thing that i don't think is consistant with her being dead is when he touches her face she starts to smile. she's obviously sixteen years old, very young for all the terriblness of love. i assume the guy is older. maybe it's her birthday now and that;s why he came to see her. he comes in and sees her, her cigarette has been burning for awhile so the ash has fallen on her hands. i imagine they have some form of sexual relationship since he just goes in there while she's naked and starts talking to her. well she's obviously tryin to commit suicide. i imagine by ways of pills and alcohol, so she's probably half passed out half awake, so she just seems unconsious. he finds the note, thinks she's dead and looks at her awhile and feels awful, but when he goes down to touch her she smiles a little still being a little consious and he wishes he loved her so she wouldn't have done such a terrible thing. it's not sixteen candles down the drain because she's dead, they're down the drain because this will mess up her youth, she'll probably go through a lot becuase of an attempted suicide and maybe even be committed for awhile.

General Comment:Although the death interpretation works very well, for some reason I want to believe in a more positive interpretation.

    Love lost.

General Comment:the lyrics for molly (sixteen candles) are better... He finds her dead in a bathtub. At first he thinks she is just passed out drunk in the bathtub so he starts laughing at her, but she's been dead for a while from the looks of the flowers in the vase. She wrote that she loved him. He doesn't want to ask why she did this (because he doesn't want to know? or he doesn't want to face the truth?). She was only 16 and now its 16 wasted years because she comitted suicide (down the drain). He touches her face (she passed out forever) and he wishes he loved her while she was still living.
