Lyrics for The Wind as interpreted by ramblingfool

The Wind Lyrics
I listen to the wind
to the wind of my soul
Where I'll end up well I think
only God really knows
I've sat upon the setting sun
but never, never never never
I never wanted water once
no never, never, never

I listen to my words but
they fall far below
I let my music take me where
my heart wants to go
I swam upon the devil's lake
but never, never never never
I'll never make the same mistake

No never, never, never

When I heard this song on the Timberland ad, I went out and bought "the very best of". I never regretted it. Its a great CD, filled with songs like this one. So pleasing to listen to, yet it makes ya think.

I love this song, but I don't know what it's exactly about. To me, it means living a simple, enjoyable life. By going where your heart takes you, not having too many wants, and not dwelling on your past mistakes, you will live a happy, complete life.

you have to listen to the wind of your soul. you don't always have to know where your going. less is better.

this is a fantastically simple song, but it is so effecting. It is just saying that you should just do what you want, let the wind take you where you want to go. Brilliant.

"I let my music take me where my heart wants to go."
This line has to be one of the best ever put to music. Music is such an essential part of the human soul that it can bring us where we need to be, instead of where our minds drag us.

I think the song is about Cat finding contentment in God. A lot of his music was about death and religion, but this song i feel is about how all that is behind him.

I listen to the wind
to the wind of my soul

He's finally listening just to what his soul is telling him, and ignoring the misleadings of the world around him.

Where I'll end up well I think
only God really knows

the second line of this is a just a standard phrase for not knowing, but here it means that truly only God knows, and he's putting his trust in that.

I've sat upon the setting sun
but never, never never never
I never wanted water once
no never, never, never

Now that he's at peace, even sitting on the sun doesn't make him cry out for water, which I'm guessing means giving in to temptations of life.

I listen to my words but
they fall far below
I let the my music take me where
my heart wants to go

His music has helped him get this far in it all.

I swam upon the devil's lake
but never, never never never
I'll never make the same mistake

Pretty clear here, he's put aside the dark things he did in his past, and he'll never return to them.

This is my ultimate childhood music...well this and Zucchero. My parents used to play this song all the time. It means a lot to me. It's so peaceful, and SO spiritual. I love the way he relates his soul to wind. It's about life, about change and about destiny.

I agree wholeheartedly with MusicOfSilence... that line is my absolute favorite of this song... I first heard this song in the movie Almost Famous, and instantly had to find it after hearing it...

the only downside I'd say is that it's so short. But I guess that just goes along with the simple theme of the song :)

i have an issue with cat stevens as a person, but i overlook his character for this song, which i simply adore -- spiritual, profound, clear and simplistic, totally pure. i listen to it and i'm on this natural high.

You have an issue with him?

do you even know him?
that's a bit judgemental

I can judge him by his actions, which include giving money to Hamas. He is anti-semitic and has supported terrorism. Yet the purpose of my comment was to set aside any personal feelings and acknowledge the beauty of his music. Thus, rather than being judgmental or narrow-minded, I am being open-minded, by listening and enjoying music for the sake of music, rather than disregarding it because I disagree with the singer. The song is brilliant, and I admire Cat as a musician.

Heh. Whatever you say man. But to me, Cat Stevens is a musician and because of that I'll only judge him as a musician.

And f*ck, I just love this song.

Just to be clear, it's impossible for a muslim to be anti-semitic, given that Islam is a semitic religion and Arabic is a semitic language. Islam is not an anti-semitic religion, in early days jews and christians had a special protected status in muslim society. The conflict between Israel en the Palestines is not a religious conflict, people just abuse religion to make bad deeds seems good. Still, supporting hamas i's not a very good idea, neither is supporting Israel, by the way. And now, back to the song, before getting into a complicated political debate :)
I really love this song, I read Cat Stevens converted to Islam after almost drowning when he went swimming, maybe that has something to do with "I swam upon the devil's lake".
It's a very simple, pure and spiritual song, it touches me every time I hear it.

This song is incredible! Short and to the point.
BTW - Philosophy - you are way off. Early muslims were ordered by Muhammed to slaughter the jews who were then living in Saudi Arabia. Look it up dude.
