Lyrics for Amanda Cecilia as interpreted by dragonflower44

Amanda Cecilia Lyrics
Saw you walking around through old town
I thought you said you weren't going to be a hit no more
Cecilia Amanda
I don't want to see you get like you got before
Amanda showed me a new party dress yesterday
Dancing to records he scratched
The two of you's a study in making total opposites match

Little Miss Amanda wants to know how long you're going to be gone
And she asked me can I fix it so the record plays the rest of her song
She ain't got a father now, because he's buried below
Way up high in the sky with all the people she knows

I'm seeing the crush kill the kid
The things you promised you never did
She asked me are you a pretty dancer
But I don't think I'm going to answer

Saw you walking around through old town
Thought you said you wouldn't come to me to score
Because you got a little baby now
I don't want to see you around here no more
Amanda showed me a new party dress yesterday
Dancing to records he scratched
Some dealing amateur actor making opposites match

He sings this song on the Jackpot Studio Sessions recordings. He has a large number of unrelased songs. Many of his best, I think, were unreleased.

Either I have a different version or these lyrics are wrong. Hm.

"cause every remembrance of you have buried below.
every memory that I, unhappily know.
---
I'm sorry for you and your kid the things you promised that you never did."

precipitate, there are two different versions, both can be found on the Elliott Smith b-sides website. you have the b-side version and the lyrics above are the revised version that were only preformed live.

Although i think on the last line of the first stanza the lyrics read "the two years of studyin', making total opposites match" BUT i might be wrong. Amazing song either way.

i love the bit at the start of the live version of thiswhere he says "sorry bout the high notes.........well, y'know..... you can tell what it's s'posed to be........which is about as good as anything i'm gonna do!", and the girl shouting out after the first bit "no, the high notes are great!".
this bit jusat shows you how elliott was so fragile and delicate and the girl is how people were always trying to help him and support him. reminds me of how you can hear jennifer chiba say "because i love you" in King's Crossing, just after he says "give me one good reason not to do it".
great song too, i love the guitar, reminiscent of southern belle and christian brother in terms of intricacy but sweeter.

This song is from the demos he was working on before he killed himself. It's on Basement II.

Let's talk about the song meaning, even though all these contrived comments were left years ago. I prefer the other set of lyrics myself. And it's totally about a stripper he had the hots for. There's that. Enjoy. Oh yeah, do him a favor quit talking about how you would want to hug him and boo hoo. Some people are just built that way, negativity, melancholy, addiction and don't want others telling them to smile or cheer up or whatever. His music would've been something completely different and probably not nearly as inspired if he was some happy kid from the west hills, rather than a kid that got into drugs and just didn't fit in in the west hills. His music is unparalleled in my opinion and it's due to depression and drugs.

This was my first Elliott song. I found it on accident. I believe it was one of his most beautiful. I also have the other version. (Basement II) Beautiful man.

Well, I think I'll join stasiuk in being one of the only people to actually discuss the lyrics rather than waste space by talking about how OMFGAMAZING this song is.

What I get from it, he's friends with a couple who are a pair of "total opposites" - the girl is some beautiful, sweet, delicate thing and the guy treats her badly and takes her for granted. Elliott (or the song-Elliott, however you want to put it) is in love with her, but stays away because she's with someone else. But he's still there for her, hence how she comes to him to fix the records.
The girl still loves her boyfriend for whatever reason, and they end up having a baby. The guy's a drug addict and comes to Elliott to score drugs and Elliott sends him away. The end of the song is them all back where they started. Pretty straightforward.
Oh yeah, and it's a lovely song.

I hear it as Amanda being the little girl...don't have more to say than that, that's how it holds together and makes sense for me.

I agree with halfright.
I hear it as Amanda being the child of Cecilia Amanda the first verse.
Good Song.

This might (must) be wrong, but still, this is what I hear when I listen to the song. Cecilia is a single mother, Amanda is her daughter. Amanda's father doesn't care for them, maybe even abuses them, but maybe he's just dead. Or gone for a walk?
Anyways, they strugle to get through this situation really bad...And the "dancer" pretty much sounds like a stripper.
The narrator is a friend of her, but he doesn't do anything to help.
