Lyrics for Sympathy for the Devil as interpreted by oofus

Sympathy for the Devil Lyrics
Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long long year stolen many a man's soul and faith
I was around Jesus Christ had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate washed his hands and sealed his fate
Pleased to meet you hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you is the nature of my game

Stuck around St. Petersburg when I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the Tzar and his ministers; Anastaria screamed in vain
I rode a tank held a gen'rals rank when the blitzkrieg
raged and the bodies stank
Pleased to meet you hope your guess my name, oh yeah
Ah what's puzzling you is the nature of my game, oh yeah

I watched the glee while your kings and queens fought for
ten decades for the Gods they made
I shouted out "who killed the Kennedy's?" when after all it was you and me
Let me please introduce myself I'm a man of wealth and taste
And I lay traps for troubadors who get killed before they reach Bombay

Pleased to meet you hope you guess my name, oh yeah
But what's puzzling you is the nature of my game, oh yeah

Pleased to meet you hope you guess my name
But what's confusin you is just the nature of my game

Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me Lucifer
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint

So if you meet me Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, um yeah

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, um yeah
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, um mean it, get down

Woo, who
Oh yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
Oh yeah!

Tell me baby, what's my name
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name
Tell me baby, what's my name
I tell you one time, you're to blame

oh, who
woo, woo
Woo, who
Woo, woo
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Oh, yeah

What's my name
Tell me, baby, what's my name
Tell me, sweetie, what's my name

Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Oh, yeah
Woo woo
Woo woo

seems to me like they where singing about showing sypathy for everyone. no matter what theyve done, or who they are. this is truely what jesus taght. forgive everyone no matter what, and show them sympathy. the reason i think this is the meaning of this song is the lyrics:
So if you meet me Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste

means that if u dont show sypathy to everyone, even the devil, u will roast in hell.

Go out and rent the movie "Patton" with George C. Scott and then you will understand EVERY SINGLE LYRIC in this song. I just watched Patton last month and could not believe what I was seeing. And no I was not on drugs.

Patton is the devil. He was called this in the movie.

He believed in reincarnation and truly believed he has been on every major battlefield in the history of the world.

He believed he was a Roman soldier at the crucifixion.

At the end of the movie Patton was removed from command after he slapped a couple of patients in a hospital who were suffering from shell-shock. Patton was over-zealous and even though he was a ruthless SOB, you end up feeling just a little bit sorry for him - i.e. sympathy.

The song and the movie are uncanny.

The only problem I have is that the George C. Scott version came out in 1970, and Beggars Banquet was released on 1968.

Patton's history was obviously years before.
Jagger must have studied Patton earlier.

The song Sympathy for the Devil probably inspired the re-make of Patton.

Or perhaps Jagger was privvy to the film while it was in production and he was able to get the song out well in advance of the movie.

Go rent the movie and you will be amazed.

The REALLY REALLY strange thing about watching this movie is how much it has changed my perception of Jagger as the devil.

Sorry for the duplicate post. But here are some additional thoughts:

Patton was a man of wealth and taste
He demanded total submission to his will, otherwise he would lay your soul to waste...
He even referred to himself as the devil
He had a general's rank, when the blitzkrieg raged and the bodies stank (WW2)

Jagger must have been a believer in the conspiracy theory about the Kennedy assassinations and that the military was behind it. Otherwise, not sure how this worked its way into the song.

I will take it one step further:
Jagger and especially Brian Jones were always into "puzzles".

So, the song is literally challenging you to "guess my name". Even the "who who" background vocals are taunting us to figure it out.

After 30 years, maybe now we have "guessed Patton's name".
And maybe now we know the "nature of Jagger's game."

"What's been puzzling you?" has been sitting under our noses the whole time. A long long time.

Whether Jagger had satanic beliefs, or not, he was CLEARLY impressed with Patton. And obviously felt sorry (sympathy) for Patton (the devil).

I think the line "And I lay traps for troubadors who get killed before they reach Bombay" refers to the Thuggees in India. More can be found at the link below.

Im probably wrong but I believe the meaning of the song has to do with how the politicians and religious right wings who condemn rock bands as a whole and blame them as the root of all evil when they are really only trying to have fun and generate happiness. that is the reference of the heads tails thing, also he is saying that he is called the devil by these right wingers and if you believe them you couldn't guess his real name, which isnt lucifer. Right wingers have blamed rock music for years as being the devils tool. the reference every cop is a criminal and all the sinners saints, everything is upside down not what it appears at the surface.
hes saying sure it was me comitting all the evil throughout the years and not the corrupt politicians and religious figures who where actually then and still are the real evil of the world.remember this that
all wars pretty much where fought for religious reasons. usually to get rid of religious competition or religions that most of the people hated at the time. just look at the crusades for instance they where all about converting the pagans and if the didnt convert they where tortured or killed. he isnt saying he is the devil he is being sarcastic about the people ( politicians and religious )who say he is. people dont like change, specially music. when something comes along thats different or new a lot will resist it and use what ever weapons they have in their arsenal to kill it. including lies and condemnation.

it covers:
-The crucifixion of Jesus
-The communist revolution in Russia
-World War 2
-The Hundred Years War
-The assassination of JFK / RFK

and its telling us to guess his name. this is tracing our history right back to jesus' time, which nobody can live that long. there is no mention of the devil in the song, but it says that his names include lucifer. that is the devil, particularly as the song is called sympathy for the devil. if we look at the events that occurred not one of them was an act of god or the devil, but was of man himself. this draws us to the conclusion that:

his name --> the devil --> humanity

this is strengthened by the fact that religion is a man-made ideal.

and i havnt read everyones post so i dont know if this got answered but a troubadour is basically a bard, a storyteller.

Call me a geek, but I skimmed almost all the opinions on this song from the first post back in '02 until now. There are some interesting opinions on this song.

El don back in '05 had an interesting post, but I beleive that what the lyrics are saying, "I watched the glee while your kings and queens fought for
ten decades for the Gods they made" refer to the 100 years War and the fact that the rulers then and through out history(even today) have used religion to there evil ends like in the crusades.
Then Tcannizzo said that this was about Patton, which is very interesting the conclusion he drew and I had never thought of, but Kennedy's were killed post Patton, unless he still lives on??? Hmmm??? If Patton still lives get his phone number and maybe he can bail us out in the middle east.

This song is about, how everybody has that inner battle of good and evil inside us. We are all evil, and the faster to hate something, the stronger the evil inside that person, as he is only trying to stop the evil inside.

Targetsuks2 yes the Kennedy's were killed post-Patton, the man, not Patton, the movie. The song was not far after the movie was released. Who knows where these songwriters get their ideas from?

The real trick would be to find the person who is alive today, who thinks he is the re-incarnated Patton. lol

To me these lyrics mean the Devil or Lucifer as he is called in the song causes the the bad things in the World but he isn't credited for them. "Have Some Sympathy" That just the way I see it. They are powerful and controversal lyrics. I love the song.

Oh, and Gilthanis,
The System of a Down lyrics
"Father into your hands I commed my spirit,
Why have you forsaken me?
In your eyes forsaken me,
In your thoughts forsaken me,
In your heart forsaken"
Is actually a quote from the Bible.
Jesus Christ said that to his Father(God) while he was hanging on the cross.

Wasn't sure if you knew that.

Tcannizzo, if only we could find Patton re-incarnate he'd put current commanders to shame in this PC Army we have. Can anybody shed some light on the lyrics that talk about Pilate washing his hands to seal his fate? I know that he washed his hands after he made the decision to hand Jesus back over to the Jews, but how is that sealing Jesus's fate? Is there some Roman tradition that I am missing?

This fits with the Patton theory. Short version: Patton believed in reincarnation and that he had been a soldier in every major army in history, including being a Roman soldier. It was the Roman soldiers who handed Jesus over to Pilate. Jesus was a political problem for the Roman Empire. The soliders were also known to be in the crowd saying "Give us Barrabas" which Pilate, being a fair ruler, said he could find no fault in Jesus and couldn't convict him of any wrongdoing. Ultimatlley Pilate "washed his hands" of it and turned Jesus back to the Jews. The Roman soldiers adjucated the crucifixion.

Taking it one step further, if this song was about Jagger, then what about some of the other numbers on the same album? Prodigal Son - quoting scripture.
Salt of the Earth - say a prayer for the common foot soldier.

I think it's about how we should all have sympathy for the devil, as we've all displayed evil in our lives at some point.
