Lyrics for Angel in the Snow as interpreted by dragonflower44

Angel in the Snow Lyrics
I'd say you make a perfect
Angel in the snow
All crushed out on the way you are
Better stop before it goes too far
Don't you know that I love you?
Sometimes I feel like only a cold still life
That fell down here to lay beside you

Don't you know that I love you?
Sometimes I feel like only a cold still life
Only a frozen still life
That fell down here to lay beside you

what a beautiful song...

To me it's about the helplessness of a harmful relationship, be that a friend, a lover, a drug... it doesn't really matter. It describes all of them.

it's very ambiguous in it's imagery. it could be drugs or love. Either one, the snow represents the purity of it all.

"i'd say you make a perfect
angel in the snow
all crushed out on the way you are
better stop before it goes too far "

either he's in love with a girl who has a massive crush on him and he doesn't want to hurt her through his inadequacy/shortcomings or he's enamoured with drugs and the way they are all crushed up and he doesn't want to take it too far.

and

"sometimes i feel like only a cold still life
that fell down here to lay beside you "

Inadequacie's/shortcomings comes into play again here. He doesn't know how to respond in the face of the situation, he freezes, be it through the fear of love and failure and what it could do to him or drugs and the consequences that they entail. Either way, he wishes to be a part of the purity of the freezing cold and its simple ways. He wishes he were a part of it so that he could simply lay down and become whatever it is that affects him so greatly.
It's really all about something you love but you cant deal with, be it drugs or love.
It could be either depending on your viewpoint.

A wonderful simple and sweet song.

thx Elliott

the first time i read this song,i just get this from it. you love someone, and they love you back, but you feel like a shadow under them almost. they have the best intentions, and they do not mean to make you feel like that, though.

okay, this and stained glass eyes are my two favorite Elliott songs. (i'll try to get those lyrics up, they are beautiful) anyway this song really reminds me of the movie Eternal Sunshine. it's this love but it gets messed up and the people are hopeless 'cos they are going to end up hurt, but they can't help getting sucked in again and again. just my take. if anyone else has noticed Elliott's ferquent references to "division" and "angels in the snow" please tell me so i know i haven't imagined it.

this song is so sad.

the return of the bridge/chorus is so powerful and it just makes me want to cry. makes me think of times where i've felt like i just belong to one person, but know that they don't belong to me.

To lost in twilight, yeah he mentions "division" quite a lot but "angel in the snow" is only from Clementines. I might be wrong. I think the two songs were written around in the same time too, since it's taken me several years to find the demo of Angel in the Snow instead of a really grainy old version.

Anyways, most beautiful song he's ever written in my opinion. Touch in its poignancy yet so simple at the same fucking time.

this is one of my favorite songs, of elliott's and in general. it is so beautifully sad, the music and the lyrics are gorgeously matched and evoke this feeling of hopelessness. I agree with the previous post about inadequacy and shortcomings involved.

Amazing song. I think it's about loving someone beautiful but really messed-up ("All crushed out on the way you are / Better stop before it gets too far"), but not being able to help them ("Don't you know that I love you?"). This helplessness contributes to inherent feelings of inadequacy, not being enough for said person ("Sometimes I feel like a cold still life / That fell down here to lie beside you").

I think this song is about coke use.

"Snow" is a name for coke.

"all crushed out on the way you are
better stop before it goes too far
don't you know that i love you
sometimes i feel like only a cold still life
that fell down here to lay beside you"

I think all crushed out is talking about a line of coke, he knows that he should stop before it goes too far and he gets too addicted but he loves it, and its the only thing that really makes him feel alive.

Many coke users refer to it as a woman, almost as a girlfriend.

i dont think thats what its about, but it just might have been. i think its about a relationship thats just not working out. I think that he loved whoever this girl was but he just feels like he is inadequate to her. maybe just maybe

i originally related this song to a girl who brought warmth and light into my otherwise cold, empty life; my angel in the snow. however, the way elliott almost begs for acceptance from a higher being with the line "don't you know that i love you" kinda bothers me. still a beautiful song, just less hopeful than i'd once imagined.

Okay. Just because the man did drugs before, does -not- mean that every song has to be about drugs. Jesus Christ. It really pisses me off when people seem to jump to that conclusion in every song. You know, there -was- more to his life than drugs. His mind wasn't that much in the gutter, people! Give the man more credit.

i totally agree with tambam.
you can say that any of elliott's songs were about drugs.
you can say that of just about any song on the planet actually.
but that doesn't mean it's true.
you know, he did have other things going on in his life.

I'm pretty sure if an Elevinth Commandment were created it would go something like this: "Thou shalt not assume Elliott Smith's music is always about drugs." I can see the relevance in some songs to drugs, such as with "Needle in the Hay" or "True Love", but when people try with all their might to force every song of his to be about drugs, it gets irritating. There was more to him than drugs. Isn't it possible that in some fiber of his body there was more to him than addiction? This might sound outrageous to some of you, but I'm going to say it anyway. Perhaps Elliott Smith fell in love once! Shocking thought, isn't it? Because that would mean that insteand of always symbolizing drugs with a girl, he actually might be referring to another human being!

I really don't consider this song in anyway to be about drugs. Anyone who has ever had strong feelings for someone who does not return them should be able to relate to this song. The person doesn't realize how much they mean to him, and they don't realize how much they are hurting him. This is why, "Don't you know that I love you?" is asked.
It's a beautiful song. One of his most heartfelt.

Firstly, calm the fuck down.

It seems people who bitch about others giving their opinions about a song being about drugs, they throw a fit, put on some holier than thou facade, and then right away claim the song to be about love and some relationship.

I think, perhapse the reason you get all riled up is because you fit the lyrics to the song to a given situation in your life that you relate to, and you don't even want to consider that this beautiful, emotional, meaningful song to you could be about mere drug use.

Just look at the imagery here. Elliott uses lots of drug imagery in his songs. For example, "The White Lady Loves You More". The White Lady being a common street name for cocaine. That song is obviously about coke.

Like "White Lady", "Snow" is also a common name for cocaine. So is it really that far of a stretch to think that maybe, just MAYBE the following lines...

"i'd say you make a perfect
angel in the snow
all crushed out on the way you are
better stop before it goes too far"

could be about cocaine use?

I mean FFS, get off your god damned high horse. We all have opinions. While it's true that just because Smith was an addict it doesn't mean all his songs are about drugs, but it also doesn't mean that none of them are.

I still stand by my previous comment. This song is about straight-up drug use. Don't like it? Blow me.

i hate the feuding that happens on this website. yes, some people need to be corrected but you don't need to act arrogant about correcting them.

blow me? hold old are we now? let's just focus on the song, people, not acting cooler because one of us thinks we know exactly what elliott was meaning for us to get from this song.

people dont get that that's the best part about music, and songs. that you can perceive them however the hell you want and there's nothing wrong with that.

but, yeah, this song really really fits my life right now perfectly. i love it.

I love this song. So simple yet so perfect. I'm probably the only one who feels this way but this song really makes me think of death. It is so sad and beautiful at the same time and everytime I hear it I feel like crying. It makes me think of Elliott and people close to me who have passed away.

"I'd say you make a perfect angel in the snow"

obviously angel referring to someone who has passed way

"don't you know that I love you? sometimes I feel like only a cold still life that fell down here to lay beside you"

basically the feeling of being left behind and just wishing you could tell that person how much you love them

I know that this is way too simple and probably not what the song is about but that is what it means to me so please don't jump down my throat.

what i hold on to in this song is 'sometimes i feel like only a cold still life that fell down here to lay beside you'

i particularl like the intentional (or unintentional) self-comparison to art ('still life') with perhaps a double meaning of being dead (read: 'cold still life that fell down to lay')
