Lyrics for Under My Thumb as interpreted by oofus

Under My Thumb Lyrics
Under my thumb
The girl who once had me down
Under my thumb
The girl who once pushed me around

It's down to me
The difference in the clothes she wears
Down to me, the change has come, she's under my thumb

Ain't it the truth babe?

Under my thumb
The squirmin' dog who's just had her day
Under my thumb
A girl who has just changed her ways

It's down to me, yes it is
The way she does just what she's told
Down to me, the change has come she's under my thumb
Ah, ah, say it's alright

Under my thumb
A siamese cat of a girl
Under my thumb
She's the sweetest, hmmm, pet in the world

It's down to me
The way she talks when she's spoken to
Down to me, the change has come, she's under my thumb
Ah, take it easy babe
Yeah

It's down to me, oh yeah
The way she talks when she's spoken to
Down to me, the change has come, she's under my thumb
Yeah, it feels alright

Under my thumb
Her eyes are just kept to herself
Under my thumb, well I
I can still look at someone else

It's down to me, oh that's what I said
The way she talks when she's spoken to
Down to me, the change has come, she's under my thumb
Say, it's alright

Say it's all
Say it's all

Take it easy babe
Take it easy babe
Feels alright
Take it, take it easy babe

My boyfriend type guy said this song describes how he feels about me at this moment in time but I'm not so sure thats a good thing...? Whats he saying here? That he's got control over me, that I'm his little lap dog or something? Ahh so confused!

Probably the most self-assured, coolest song ever written. Not that I think this song is cool, but that this song KNOWS it's cool. It's cool in its being, in its playing, and in its very existance. The guitar knows it's cool. The keyboard knows it's cool. Mick knows he's cool.

Many feminest groups have opposed this song, ecpecally because of this line:

"The way she talks when she's spoken to down to me."

I personally don't see way it's so offending. Great song...

seems to me it's like this:

boy likes girl, but she rejects him. once he stops, she suddenly realizes that she likes him back. so now he feels he can do what he likes with her, cause now she'll do anything for him.

Its obviously about a guy who was formerly insecure with a girl and now the roles are reversed, or a girl that he yearned for and saw as a wonder and now he has her an sees how in love with him she is and doesnt feel so inferior anymore.

If anyone has read the Marianne Faithfull autobiography they'll know that this is about a woman (I can't remember her name, any ideas?) Jagger was going out with who was totally in control of him and taking advantage. Then the tables turned and she was under his thumb! read this book it's absolutly brilliant, it mentions how lots of their songs came about. and how 'ruby tuesday's tune was a complete fluke, when Brian Jones was playing around on the recorder (sounds like a flute) they all noticed the brilliant sound it had. It's beautiful! oh yeah and don't think its ''demeaning'', its from Jaggers own experience and it works both ways for men and women. She did it to him first! what goes around.........!! Legend.

I wouldn't get offended if a guy sang this to me, because this song just sounds incredible. Whoever he's singing about, the girl had them write a song about her. that's pretty cool if you ask me.

Great song--originally titled "Under My Bum". Chrissie Shrimpton might be the woman's name you're looking for but what the hell do I know? I wasn't there.

Shows how much self respect you have, subterranean summer.

Put aside the fact the it's sounds "incredible", the guy has complete control over you, your doing everything he wants, and he's sitting back laughing at you.

A few people here have said that this song isn't insulting because it sounds so good.
Might I say, WHAY THE HELL?
Just because it's got a good beat, that doesn't change the lyrics.
And I'm not saying you should hate the song because of the lyrics, I'm just saying you shouldn't disregard them completely.

Right, one more thing.
About the last part of your comment.
You'd think that the girl would be insulted and embarassed, not complimented, because it's not just him sitting back and laughing at her, it's him telling millions of people how he's taking advantage of you, and you're just going along with it.

To take another perspective - maybe its about drug abuse? A once out-of-control drug problem that's now under Mick's thumb ie. under control? Maybe this idea of having control, a girl or drug or whatever, can be applied to anything? Just an idea.

This song is absolutely brilliant. At a time where feminism was gaining strength, here comes Jones and Jagger and put out a song like this..well..the whole Aftermath album actually..just listen to Stupid Girl. The cynicism in this song just really does it for me...great song

I am not sure this is meant literally, I have always heard it as saying something different from what it means, it may have been the stones trying to stir up the feminists because they were so radical in some cases, but I don't think this is what the stones actually believed in. Especially with the cliches about "the way she talks when she's spoken to" and "her eyes just kept to herself." Those are classic things said about how women were supposed to be when they were truly repressed. I don't think they were trying to make a political statement, I think it was far more likely that it was a personal thing as described earlier, or perhaps a satire on how some men did believe in this. I think it was just poking fun at this kind of thing and maybe Mick sticking his tongue out at some lady who had done him wrong, and now he was over it or in control in some way, he's turned the tables, as mentioned above. I am certain though, that they weren't trying to make a serious political statement about women or something.

Meh i'm not going to get all political, its the same for everyone, someones got the upper hand some of the time and its his time, yeah its taking the piss, and the poor girl radiradirah. All that aside, I like the humour of it all, Its a great tune, almost sweet....I like the interpretation someone had about the drugs, cos that eould make sense too, almost liberating for the protragonist. Either way. lovely little tune!

Beautiful song... the combination of the blues guitar and xylophone really show the genius behnid these guys... as for the lyrics..while a bit on the mysoginistic side, they do convey an in-your face attitude that I am sure a lot of us guys could relate to at one point in our lives.
