Someone found the future as a statue
In a fountain
At attention looking backward in a
Pool of water

Wishes with a blue
Songbird on his shoulder
Who keeps singing over everything

Everything means nothing to me
Everything means nothing to me
Everything means nothing to me

I picked up the song and found my picture
In the paper
The reflection in the water shouted
"Are your men still

Trying to salute
People from a time when he was
Everything he's supposed to be?"

Everything means nothing to me

General Comment:As long as he looks back at his life he will be sad. This because a blue bird sings sad songs and the blue bird will be there as long as the statue stands.

General Comment:This makes me think of memorial statues for war veterans. You know how some statues can be placed in natural poses and near fountains. But what it means is that he is washed up. His time is gone and the stone statue is like his way of standing still in time that was good for him. He wishes for things to be good by wishing in a well but a song bird, his sadness and despair, is everywhere he goes (hence on his shoulder). Everything means nothing to me seems like a line that could mean a lot of things. To me it means that all the world around him doesn't mean anything to him because he is so focused on one aspect of his life that has already passed. Which kind of goes with soldiers. They get built up and trained for one purpose which is to fight for the things that they love. but after the fight they are just veterans without much respect and have a fucked up life for fighting. It can relate to lovers who fight for what they love but loose everything. They can't see the beauty in anything else because they are so devastated by some fight. Now he looks back at what he had in the past.

General Comment:Not sure I agree with the previous posts about this song... I think it's a song about nihilism. The first verse is simply telling of a person/people who strive to achieve great things to be remembered and honored (The first line: "Someone found the future as a statue..).

The second verse he's referring to himself (obviously), back when he used to care about things and used to "conform" to traditional ideals of success (last line: "From a time when he was everything he's supposed to be").

Of course, we all interpret things based on how we see them ourselves. A simple song, yet so meaningful; and when the music swells, it sends shivers down my spine. I love Elliott's music so much.

General Comment:"the reflection in the water showed an iron man still trying to salute people from a time when he was everything he's supposed to be"

this line says a lot to me. especially the word REFLECTION...
what I'm understanding from this line is Elliott was thinking back in his past to a time when he was trying to appease those around him by being something that is commonly accepted.
    or...
speaking of someone else who felt this way
the problem that i have with a lot of interpretations of his music is that i have a difficulty understanding if the song is about himself, people in general, or someone he knows personally.

General Comment:In an interview, Elliott said this about this song:

IT'S IRONIC THAT YOU SHOULD MENTION 'THE WHITE ALBUM', BECAUSE 'FIGURE 8' REMINDS ME OF IT... PARTICULARLY 'EVERYTHING MEANS NOTHING TO ME'...WAS THAT ONE OF THE SONGS RECORDED AT ABBEY ROAD?
ELLIOTT: I take that very much as a compliment, thank you. That song, though, wasn't recorded there... but it was made up when I had been in a psychedelic state, shall we say, for a couple of days... and that was the product of that. That one was recorded really quickly, so I really like how it turned out... probably because it required next to no effort.
ALMOST AS IF YOU'D HAD THE VALVE REMOVED FROM YOUR DOORS OF PERCEPTION!

General Comment:One more thing, about the Figure 8 stuff, it really does have a great meaning to the album. He stated what the album title meant in an interview once (forget what the interview was for, though):

"I just like the idea of a figure eight, of figure skaters trying to make this self-contained, perfect thing that takes a lot of effort but essentially goes nowhere."

General Comment:The first part, to me, is talking about how he just wants to live and either go on or live in the moment peacefully, yet there is always something keeping him from doing that, ie the blue songbird who keeps singing over everything.

The second part, to me, is taking about how he has been breaking down and just sinking to the bottom, while reminiscing on how he was before, before he started to fall into rock bottom.
