Someone found the future as a statue
In a fountain
At attention looking backward in a
Pool of water
Wishes with a blue
Songbird on his shoulder
Who keeps singing over everything
Everything means nothing to me
Everything means nothing to me
Everything means nothing to me
I picked up the song and found my picture
In the paper
The reflection in the water shouted
"Are your men still
Trying to salute
People from a time when he was
Everything he's supposed to be?"
Everything means nothing to me
In a fountain
At attention looking backward in a
Pool of water
Wishes with a blue
Songbird on his shoulder
Who keeps singing over everything
Everything means nothing to me
Everything means nothing to me
Everything means nothing to me
I picked up the song and found my picture
In the paper
The reflection in the water shouted
"Are your men still
Trying to salute
People from a time when he was
Everything he's supposed to be?"
Everything means nothing to me

I think everyone has been here at least once in their life.
The second verse he's referring to himself (obviously), back when he used to care about things and used to "conform" to traditional ideals of success (last line: "From a time when he was everything he's supposed to be").
Of course, we all interpret things based on how we see them ourselves. A simple song, yet so meaningful; and when the music swells, it sends shivers down my spine. I love Elliott's music so much.
this line says a lot to me. especially the word REFLECTION...
what I'm understanding from this line is Elliott was thinking back in his past to a time when he was trying to appease those around him by being something that is commonly accepted.
or...
speaking of someone else who felt this way
the problem that i have with a lot of interpretations of his music is that i have a difficulty understanding if the song is about himself, people in general, or someone he knows personally.
IT'S IRONIC THAT YOU SHOULD MENTION 'THE WHITE ALBUM', BECAUSE 'FIGURE 8' REMINDS ME OF IT... PARTICULARLY 'EVERYTHING MEANS NOTHING TO ME'...WAS THAT ONE OF THE SONGS RECORDED AT ABBEY ROAD?
ELLIOTT: I take that very much as a compliment, thank you. That song, though, wasn't recorded there... but it was made up when I had been in a psychedelic state, shall we say, for a couple of days... and that was the product of that. That one was recorded really quickly, so I really like how it turned out... probably because it required next to no effort.
ALMOST AS IF YOU'D HAD THE VALVE REMOVED FROM YOUR DOORS OF PERCEPTION!
this song is so sad. and what X Co and Ca X said made it saddest.
"I just like the idea of a figure eight, of figure skaters trying to make this self-contained, perfect thing that takes a lot of effort but essentially goes nowhere."
The second part, to me, is taking about how he has been breaking down and just sinking to the bottom, while reminiscing on how he was before, before he started to fall into rock bottom.
