Everybody knows which way you go straight to over no one
Wants to see you inside of me straight to over I heard the
Hammer at the lock say you're deaf and dumb and done give
Yourself another talk this time make it sound like someone the

Noise is coming out, and if it's not out now, then tomorrow
Tomorrow they took your life apart and called you failures art
They were wrong though they wont know 'til tomorrow I got
Static in my head the reflected sound of everything tried to go

To where it led but it didn't lead to anything the noise is
Coming out, and if it's not out now, I know it's just about to
Drown tomorrow out

General Comment:Just a cross-reference to corroborate my previous interpretation. I think that a few lines in "King's Crossing" express the very same concept more explicitly:
The method acting that pays my bills
Keeps the fat man feeding in Beverly Hills
I got a heavy metal mouth that hurls obscenity
And I get my check from the trash treasury
Because I took my own insides out.

Taking your insides out for keeping fat men feeding in Beverly Hills and having your life taken apart from them that call your music art (as long as it sells obviously) is the same thing.

My Opinion:My two cents on this beatiful song.

I'm not a native speaker, so I might be wrong, but I'm surprised that it took several years to see someone tell that this song is about the "music industry" - let's call it this way.

"No one wants to see you inside of me". Probably Smith had some inputs from the label to make his music more "appealing", but he knows that what people liked in his music was its being so personal and delicate. The well-known conflict in art of all times between the commissioner and the artist.

"They took your life apart and called your failures art", even at a first listen, immediately reminded me Nirvana's "Distill the life that inside of me" from Pennyroyal Tea, another song on the issue. Dissecting one's fragilities apparently sells well, but it would hurt anyone on the long run.

"I got static in my head - the reflected sound of everything". The static is a usual theme in Smith's songs (cf. Junk Bond Trader) and I'm pretty sure he knew what is the "white noise", a noise that occupies all the frequencies a human ear can hear and beyond (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…), which is in some sense the "sound of everything" and reminds the TV static noise. In general, the third section is about the gentle flowing of inspiration, which from a full, but confused understanding of the world (the static) derives a fragile form (the noise that is coming out), which is always "about to drown tomorrow out".

General Comment:Straight to over.... I think refers to rushing to the end. Ignore the journey and just be done, hence his repeating theme of "deaf and dumb and done".

General Comment:one of my favorites from him. For me it is just plainly about his mental distress and how he has to solve his problems now or there will be no tomorrow. Just wanted to add what I think people here did not catch, that the first lines seem like a very clear reference to heroin (i could be wrong though):

"Everybody knows which way you go, straight to over, No one wants to see you inside of me, straight to over"

straight to over being straight to overdosis. No one wants to see you inside of me, the you refers to the heroin.

General Comment:I think this is pretty clearly about music industry pressure during a time of writer's block or slow output.

"No one wants to see You inside of me" - No one wants to hear something that isn't completely Elliott i.e. studio suit input.

"I heard the hammer at the lock" - trying to speed the process along when the music is "locked" up

"Say you're deaf and dumb and done" - I would say it means that they're telling him he's deaf and dumb because his incomplete songs are good enough or done but I feel like this might just be more because it's catchy.

"The noise is coming out And if it's not out now Then tomorrow, tomorrow" - The music is coming and he's not going to rush it

"They took your life apart And called your failures art" - Elliott again referencing his distaste for his label and for them telling him his songs are finished when he is not satisfied with them

"They were wrong, though They won't know till tomorrow" - Being a badass and not giving in

"I got static in my head The reflected sound of everything Tried to go to where it led But it didn't lead to anything" - Songwriters block, hearing a lot but not being able to finish the songs

"The noise is coming out And if it's not out now I know it's just about To drown tomorrow out" - My best guess is he's saying when the music comes it will drown the studio out finally. Also sounds like some reference to drugs/suicide/general depressed feelings but that may be too simplistic.

My Interpretation:It would seem to me that Elliott is talking about himself the entire song, and more specifically about writing the perfect song. He says, "No one wants to see you inside of me", I think meaning that no one wants to look at him like he's a real person. They treat him as some sort of idealized image instead of a person. He says in the second verse "This time make it sound like someone" imply that his previous musical efforts played into this sort of idealized image, and that this time he wants to write something that really does an actual person some justice. Then comes the main drive for my interpretation he mentions a noise (a song) coming out, and if not now then tomorrow. Then he mentions people calling his failures art, but they're wrong and won't know until tomorrow. He's saying that while people think highly of his past works they won't know what art is until he writes the perfect song. The last verse basically states that writing the perfect song is tough. He's trying to capture a certain aspect of the world and its people and convey it musically, but trying to reflect back all of those feelings is leaving him with static.

General Comment:i think this might be about a fight with someone and he doesnt want to think about the fight. He just wants it to be let go. Sounds like a fight with his girlfriend. might have been fighting about how he was doing drugs so heavily.

"I heard the hammer at the lock
Say you're deaf and dumb and done" person is trying to solve problem in a way that wont help. (like if you tried to break a strong lock with a hammer) Or he is comparing himself to the lock. and the girlfriend is the hammer trying to solve things harshly.

    "Give yourself another talk
This time make it sound like someone" he's saying calm yourself down and talk to me about the problem rationally. arguing wont help. make yourself sound like an actual person "make it sound like your someone"

    "The noise is coming out
And if it's not out now
Then tomorrow, tomorrow" he's going to ccontinue to argue back until its solved.. and if it isnt today, it will be another fight tomorrow.

"static in my head, the reflective sound of everything"
I believe it means that the reflective sound of everything (person who keeps bringing up whatever they are fightingg about)
makes him stop listening and all he hears is static in his head. Meaning he just closes up and doesn't listen.

"Tried to go to where it led
But it didn't lead to anything The noise is coming out" Means it didn't help to try and block the argument. He still wants to fight back.. " the noise is coming out"

"And if it's not out now
    I know it's just about
To drown tomorrow out" if he doesnt apologize, he'll hear about it tomorrow.

Thats my interpretation though.. he might have been writing about something completely different.

My Interpretation:I've got another theory: maybe this song is about the pressures put on him by the record companies to make more music. "Called your failures art" could refer to the fact that he hated his most popular songs, and loved the ones that most people hated. Or maybe he thought that all of his songs were failures.

General Comment:"Static in my head" and "deaf and dumb and done" both seem to be lyrical themes in this record, as "good to go" is on self-titled as well as just in general with Elliott. Love Perks of Being a Wallflower as well as this song and all of Elliott's work. What an awesome guy.

General Comment:your commentary on goldheart was intriguing and seems to share a similarity with this song as far as mental illness goes, and the same could be said for nick drake. as far as goldheart is concerned, that was an lsd experience that pollard had, but your interpretation might as well be correct, for no one has attempted to interpret that "trip" as well as you have. and this smith song is beautiful, and tragic... tomorrow...
