Why do you do what you do
I do what I want to do
Who said you could do what you do
I told you who told me to
I do what I want to do
I do what I want to do

Funky crime funky crime
Don't you know funk's colors blind
Well I've committed a funky crime
Against a state of mind

Hey you mister interview
I don't have to answer you
This is what I grew into
Don't judge me and my soul stew
Cause funk is my attitude
Funk is my attitude

Funky crime funky crime
Don't you know funk's colors blind
Well I've committed a funky crime
Against a state of mind

Barriers of race
In the media take place
Tellin' you there is no room
For what you do, don't budge
There's no groove to your gloom
Who made you the judge
Always room for funky tunes
And yes I funk it up

Funky boy
Meets a funky girl
Make it funky, baby
Cause the funk is crazy

Why do you do what you do
I do what I want to do
Who said you could do what you do
I told you who told me to
I do what I want to do
I do what I want to do

Funky crime funky crime
Don't you know funk's colors blind
Well I've committed a funky crime
Against a state of mind

Funky crime
Funky crime
Funky funky crime
The crime is funky

General Comment:No joke, no bragging either but there's something in that song that makes it so damn fun playing on guitar.

General Comment:wow NeonPaul, you certainly feel strongly about that, and i agree with you.
i also think that there are lots of people who underestimate the power of the chili peppers. all these freaks out there listening to the jobros and smiley virus (what i call miley cirus) have twisted ideas of what music is. i used to mostly listen to dire straits and other similar artists (music from then is so much better). but then i heard some of rhcps songs from btw and sa and thought "wow, these guys sound cool." i then went online and researched all about them and i simply fell in love. the newer albums introduced me to the chilis and i have gone through phases tracking back to their older stuff. now i own almost every album. i think the same thing happens to lots of other new fans.
everything they have created is beautiful and unique in itself, each with different emotions and views showing through.
    btw, im only 13

General Comment:While this is obviously about racism, I also love the sentiment that this song gives of breaking a state of mind generally, and challenging the media's perception of things.

    Also,
I love how half the people arguing here appear to be obsessive I-would-die-for-you, fanatic-by-choice RHCP followers (though I guess who else would be arguing over whether a band's older works are better than their newer ones but the likes of FruscianteFan1987 or SkinnySweatyWoman).

Anyway, stop hating on the old stuff and stop hating on the new stuff. And stop hating on OHM too, it's unique and brilliant in its own way. Of course young people are going to be more interested in newer songs than older songs, it's more in the public conciousness than anything created 10 or 20 years before the band was widely known. And I challenge any of you to go through your record collections and not find an artist whose earlier back catalogue you haven't bothered to check out.

Some people may say the newer songs have deeper lyrics, more skilled guitar work and general production, and an overall greater quality. I think that's a perfectly good reason to prefer anything post-OHM/BSSM. Equally it's obvious that some people prefer the rawness and funk of the early stuff, which is fair enough too.

Anyway, I think the next step after conquering the barriers of racism etc is to overcome our own pretentiousness. I'm sure RHCP would agree on that too. Christ, what an essay.

General Comment:I think Anthony's telling all the critics that funk can be sung and played by white guys, too.

General Comment:People, I'm 12 and I don't think BTW is the best album. Frick, UMPP, FS,etc. is pretty damn awesome if you ask me!
But I'm not saying the other albums are BAD. They;re just different styles. Honestly, I would be pretty freaked out if these 45 year old guys came out with socks...

General Comment:look, anna, that's fine and all that now you like their old stuff, but the reason i dislike the people who listen solely to new chili peppers stuff is because they're ignorant of so much better music, and the reason btw and cali were so popular was because they're so radio friendly. i don't like radio friendly pop-rock. i'm not saying they're bad, but i don't like their current music, and anyone who can't appreciate the old stuff doesn't deserve my respect in their musical tastes

General Comment:I love how this song starts, (the bass, guitar, and the telephne ringing lol,)My Fav line in this song has to be "hey you Mr. Interview, I don't have to answer you.." But I love every RHCP Cd. ( I own ALL of them, even Abbey Road EP which is hard to come by these days..) But My fav Chili Pepper Cd is Definitely BSSM!!!! I love the old stuff as well, as the new stuff. I just love the Chili's all around. (I even like One Hot Minute...it isn't as bad as everyone thinks it is...)

General Comment:I think every single album that the RHCP have ever made are 100% awesome!!!! i love songs from Sir Psycho Sexy to Californication. the RHCPs are very open with their music and don't care if people might think they are wierd. that's one of the greatest things about them. i was watching something from the RHCP's DVD called Funky Monks. i think thats' what its called. but anyways, Flea said something about that if you love any funky music, then you were meant to listen to thier music.

P.S. Funky Crime rocks!!!!! you just gotta love this song!!!

General Comment:i used to be one of those 13-year old btw freaks.
    So fucking what?
I now own half of their albums (more than half if you dont count what hits? and greatest hits) and i absolutely LOVE their older, funkier stuff.
But come on, the red hot chili peppers have been around for so long, it's no wonder that their style has chaged and matured. i believe a lot of people complain about btw beacuse the transition came so suddenly and inexpectedly.
all of their albums are special and great in their own way. I do have to admit that i dont really like ohm all that much because the magical connection that the band had with hillel and john simply wasnt there when they played with dave navarro.

i think it's the most wonderful thing to watch a band grow both artistically and personally over the years.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a wonderful band and make wonderful music and imho i believe the last thing they'd want is people insulting one another over their music.
